Beowulf, by Michael Morpurgo

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–Morpurgo retells the classic story of the courageous young warrior from the land of Geats (now southern Sweden) who used his brute strength to save the neighboring Danes, then his own kinsmen, by slaying two horrible monsters, a sea serpent, and a massive dragon. The tale has been divided into three segments: the story of the monster Grendel's defeat; the slaying of his mother, the sea-hag; and the battle with the death dragon of the deep. Morpurgo has retold the tale in twisting, long-winded sentences that call to mind the way in which old epics were recounted by poets and bards. The text-filled pages framed with a Celtic-style border are broken up with small watercolor illustrations tucked here and there to help move things along. Many attractive full-page watercolor and pastel paintings illustrate important action-filled scenes–battles, a banquet, and Beowulf's funeral pyre. Morpurgo's short acknowledgment states that his inspiration for this version of the Old English classic came from the likes of Seamus Heaney, Rosemary Sutcliffe, and Kevin Crossley-Holland. The lack of introductory material and historical background is noticeable but overall this is a fine retelling.–Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

In dignified, stately prose, Morpurgo retells the ancient epic that "troubles and terrifies us now as much as ever it did our ancestors, for we still fear the evil that stalks out there in the darkness and beyond." Matching the heroic tone of the narrative is Foreman's elegant watercolor art, which portrays dim, torch-lit medieval settings and epic battles between the gallant Beowulf and the terrifying monsters. The richly delineated illustrations make the book appear to be for middle-grades, but Morpurgo's Beowulf, like Rosemary Sutcliff's version (1961), retains the robust, violent nature of the original tale and is best suited for somewhat older students. An excellent adaptation - especially for younger readers. I looked over at least 6-8 different interpretations of this classic because my 8 year old son really loves adventure stories and I knew he'd enjoy the story of Beowulf. He's an advanced reader for his age, and was able to tackle this version with only occasional help. It was a perfect balance of clarity with just enough "old english" style to keep the story grounded in its history and authenticity. Some of the other translations would probably be fine for a more experience reader (teen or older), but this one was perfect for our needs (or anyone who just wants to get the story without having to work too hard at translating it in their minds as they read). Very well done.

My middle-school aged students absolutely LOVED this story. It's an EXCELLENT read, especially for boys, who relate immediately to the battle scenes. It's a fantastic epic, a great literary resource (especially in introducing students to how language has changed over time and also to view the earliest existing copies of the story digitized online), and an incredibly good storyline for talking about character traits and those traits which are admirable for us to imitate and strive for, and those which we should avoid. For an educator, this would make a fantastic cross-curricular resource and has many aspects which could utilize technology in the classroom.

Though my son is not the best with attention, he has developed the 'habit' of reading at night (somewhat mandatory in our household). I cannot remember where he heard about the story of Beowolf… perhaps a movie trailer or something of the sort... but he was intrigued enough to ask me to get him the story. He just totally soaked in this version/arrangement. I'd highly recommend it.

I own several versions of Beowulf and originally purchased this copy for my children to enjoy. I was thoroughly impressed with Mr. Morpurgo's telling of this tale and the illustrations are beautiful. The book itself is high quality with nice, thick, glossy pages. This will appeal to children and adults alike and I would highly recommend making this purchase.

I'm reading this to my kids -- they seem to be really enjoying it. I'm enjoying the adaptation -- the author has done a nice job of distilling the story but keeping the feel of the original. I particularly like how Old English alliteration is frequent in the text. I highly recommend for kids.

I missed the real message of the story of Beowulf in high school because I was so lost in the language. Michael Morpurgo brings the story of Beowulf alive for all ages to enjoy!

My daughter loved this book! She wanted story time to go on forever.

My son and I had watched the ITV series, "Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands", and I wanted him to experience a story much closer to the original. This version covered all the major parts of the story in a very accessible manner for a 10-year old. While some reviewers felt the prose of this edition wasn't up to the standards of others, I thought the occasional alliteration and poetic terms were a nod to the poem's past while not obfuscating the meaning for a young reader. The author also chose the right parts of the story to omit (some of the backstory and political asides) while preserving much of the archaic flavor.
