Review

"The team responsible for the Tacky the Penguin books and Princess Penelope's Parrot (1996), among others, is in rare form in this picture book, in which a swell little guy proves himself a hero to his tormentors. Wodney Wat has a problem: he can't pronounce the letter r, which makes him the butt of constant jokes and teasing. He's so distressed, in fact, that he routinely buries his head in his jacket--the closest he can come to actually disappearing. He thinks he's really in for it when "big, mean, smart" Camilla Capybara appears in Miss Fuzzleworth's classroom. But the tables are deftly turned when Wodney is tapped to lead a game of Simon Says: when he says "Go West" after a tough round of play, guess who does. Munsinger's well-detailed illustrations are superbly funny, a perfect complement to a comical story that will not only make kids laugh but also hearten those who feel they'll be outsiders forever." Booklist, ALA"Rodney Rat, who can't pronounce his R's, is the shyest, most miserable kid in school, until one day he saves his classmates from the mean bully Camilla Capybara. Wodney's transformation from cowering to empowered is beautifully underscored in the humorous, expressive illustrations. Appealingly, Wodney doesn't need to overcome his impediment to be liked--and it's the impediment itself and Wodney's clever use of it that foils the villain." Horn BookA shy rodent turns his defect into strength to overcome class bully and save the day. Every page is a delight in this imaginative book, which culminates in surprising word play. Energetic illustrations capture perfectly the characters of timid Rodney, the overbearing Camilla Capybara, and their rowdy rodent classmates.Parent's Choice (R)

Wonderfully illustrated book about Rodney Rat who calls himself "Wodney Wat." Wodney has a speech impediment and can't say his r's. Wodney is very insecure about his speech problem and is humiliated at school around all of his classmates. Wodney didn't like to speak at all. One day, a new student comes to school who intimidates everyone at school. Wodney is scared to death about what the new student will do when she hear's him talk. One day during recess, Wodney is the leader of the game "Simon says." Wodney's life turns gets turned around and he "comes out of his shell," and becomes popular. Great book for speech therapy with lessons on being confident and embracing your differences.

This is a wonderful book, so well-plotted and well-illustrated that the story has an effortless flow to it. Yes, Rodney is miserable at first because the other rodents make fun of his speech difficulty: kids and adults can relate to this. Rodney becomes even more miserable when the huge, incredibly-smart Camilla Capybara joins his class and intimidates everybody in it. And then, to make matters even worse, Rodney is assigned the role of sayer in Simon Says. The other rodents compensate for Rodney's inability to say the letter "R" -- they do what he means, not what he says. Camilla, however, doesn't know Rodney, or any of the other rodents. Camilla is focused exclusively on herself. She thinks she is the biggest, the smartest, and the best. She hears what Rodney says and she does what he says. While other rodents "read" the sign, Camilla hears "weed the sign" and begins to weed it.Soon Rodney understands what is happening. He sees that, by using his speech difficulty, he can get the other rodents to "go rest," but he can get Camilla to "go west."Rodney becomes a hero, as he deserves to be because he uses his skills to achieve a desired result.

This book was recommended to me by another teacher during a training. I thought it sounded fantastic, but when I actually read it, I was pretty underwhelmed. It's over the heads of most of the preschoolers, and I just didn't think was that great anyway. I think the point of the book is supposed to be that rat who is different and was once made fun of is the hero at the end, but the poor rat's heroism is totally unintentional. Even when I read it with first graders, I don't think many of them understood it or related to it very well. Nice concept, but not fully baked.

A triumph! This writer gets kids! There is humor and redemption and exactly the kind of challenge and tension a child relates to. It is so very well written and illustrated...truly masterful.. If you have a little one whose speech is coming around a bit slower than their peers, this is perfect for them.

Highly recommend this fun book with a great message.

Munsinger's expressive watercolors give the comical rats depth and personality. A great help for children with speech problems. How not being able to pronounce r's and being teased about it can turn into an asset. Wodney ends up saving his whole class from Camilla Capybera who is smarter, bigger and meaner than the other students. She takes him literally when he gives her and the group directions to wake(rake) the leaves and go west(rest)and she leaves in that direction. This turns Wodney into a hero.

I love to read this at the beginning of school.

Every speech pathologist needs this in her library for those kids with R problems. It's such a cute story, and it motivates children to correct this very difficult sound quickly.
