Darwin on Trial, by Phillip E. Johnson

From Publishers Weekly

In his own era, Darwin's most formidable opponents were fossil experts, not clergymen. Even today, according to the author, the fossil record, far from conclusive, does not support the presumed existence of intermediate links between species. A law teacher at UC-Berkeley, Johnson deems unpersuasive the alleged proofs for Darwin's assertion that natural selection can produce new species. He also argues that recent molecular studies of DNA fail to confirm the existence of common ancestors for different species. Doubting the smooth line of transitional steps between apes and humans sketched by neo-Darwinists, he cites evidence for "rapid branching," i.e., mysterious leaps which presumably produced the human mind and spirit from animal materials. This evidence, to Johnson, suggests that "the putative hominid species" may not have contained our ancestors after all. This cogent, succinct inquiry cuts like a knife through neo-Darwinist assumptions. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Dissecting the writings of Gould, Futuyama, Darwin, and Dawkins with a trenchant sword, law professor Johnson uses an attorney's reasoning to scrutinize the scientists' logic in defining the theory of evolution. Contending that science has distorted research rules to exclude Divine Creation in explaining the diversity of life, Johnson challenges the tenets of natural selection and the evolutionary evidence from fossils and genetic and molecular sources. In the closing chapters, he deals with Darwinism in education and in religion, stating that the evolutionary theory is protected for its "indispensable ideological role in the war against fundamentalism." While the book presents a skewed view of the scientific process, occasionally losing all pretense of objectivity, it may be of value to lay readers seeking a creationist perspective on evolution.- Frank Reiser, Nassau Community Coll., Garden City, N.Y.Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Lots of fun. It's certainly no ode to young earth creationism, which may or may not recommend it to some people. It is an exercise in logically examining arguments and assumptions, and for that reason it should be beneficial to anyone willing to undertake the exercise. An aid to combat consensus thinking or the idea that you should "just shut up and go along."

Really interesting take on this subject, based on logical conclusions drawn from available scientific evidence.

Yes!

I found it compelling. However, for me, it is not an easy read! Very detailed as if it is a scientific text.

For this reader, the important quality of this book is not its critical analysis of the various theories naturalistic evolution. Rather, it is important because it illustrates that believers of a system - whether atheistic or theistic, scientific or metaphysical - tend to embrace that belief with a defiance and close-mindedness that places the actual search for truth as a low priority. I personally have discussed this topic with fundamentalist Christians as well as staunch scientific atheists and find little difference between them, except that they are able quote from different books, and don't dress at all alike. The one thing they seem to have most in common is that they have little understanding of - or tolerance for - the other's point of view.In a complex universe where so little is understood, such arrogance is folly.

I thoroughly enjoy reading the author’s books as he is very methodical in his approach to his subjects. He also appreciates a critical examination of whatever the subject is. The climate within academia is disgusting when so many who would denounce Darwinism as proven are silenced because of so many leaders of schools/colleges are pro-not proving hat they believe concerning Darwinism but only interested in forcing their beliefs down everyone else’s throats to have power!!!Just like the witch trials of old, professors/faculty who disagree with the pseudoscience of Darwinism are censured and even fired because they are theists or at least serious thinkers. So much for freedom of speech, huh? And so much for the concept of higher learning. It just goes to show that sin is real, liars still exist, dictators still exist on American soil..and they call themselves scientists, brites(brights), whatever.Authors of this mans caliber I applaud and support as he is a real thinker and is will to take on doing real homework to disclose his viewpoint while the Darwinists he challenges are showing themselves to be, yet again, lazy, rhetoric blowing liars because it takes real effort to discuss truth. It takes NO work, no real thinking, no effort to hold oneself accountable to tell partial lies and just spin nonsense.Accountable? That requires adhering to moral principles that Christianity promote and as we know, most Darwinists are atheists because THEY WANT TO BE GOD and say what is and is not evil. Crush others who disagree with them and coerce all to accept their dogmas. Mmmmm Saddam Hussain tactics perpetrated on USA soil in institutions of higher learning. How poetic.

systematically takes apart the psuedo science known as Darwinsm bit by bit while putting a bullet in the heart of this atheist religious dogma.

The advent of evolutionary biology finds its roots in a synthesis of ideas culled together by Charles Darwin. In the years following his research, all of the sciences seemed to coalesce around the naturalistic presuppositions found in the pages of Origin of the Species. A rather solid cosmology was created and helped to explain the earth and its origins. Adopted as the primary model of change and the practical way of interpreting past events, science textbooks were built around evolution and its mechanisms of operation. Still, despite widespread acceptance of naturalism in academic circles, the explanations offered have been steadily refused by multitudes of people. Such a discrepancy demands discussion. While it is true that the simple answer might be obstinacy, with one side refusing to admit error, the actual divide might reveal greater issues at work. Within his book, Darwin on Trial, legal professor Phillip E. Johnson seeks to apply logic to evolutionary claims in an effort to gauge whether critics have any merit.By admission, the author is not a scientist. Although possessing a good grasp of scientific terminology and language, Phillip Johnson never seeks to portray himself as an expert in biological processes. Therefore, rather than scrutinize the minutia of every part of evolutionary theory, a broader look is taken at the language in which it is wrapped and presented. Much like testimony in a courtroom, the bold proclamations of naturalism arepicked apart for any inconsistencies and logical fallacies. As the book progresses chapter by chapter, the reader is shown the presuppositions that must be readily embraced for evolution to be placed beyond question. Far from being a subject beyond the realm of question and inquiry, the conclusion is reached that critics have a basis for their complaints. Scientists tend to espouse dogma rather than answer true and troubling questions concerning their theory, and this is the reason such widespread doubt continues within the world. The book largely succeeds in its goal of opening discussion on a topic still steeped in controversy. Although proponents of evolution (both theistic and atheistic) largely dismiss any question as out of bounds, true cracks exist in the theory and should be explored. If truth is the goal then doubts should lead to either a reinforcement of evolution or a deconstruction of it. On the other side, those who hold to a Biblical view of creation should not be frightened of studying evolution for it is impossible to debate things which are not first understood. Believers in Jesus Christ have no reason to be afraid of standing for the word of God, but a conversation is only possible when both speakers know the subject matter at hand. For twenty years this little work has spawned discussions, debates, and a digging for the truth. In that regard, the book is a resounding success.
