Dario's poetry is translated here by two American poets: Steven F. White, a leading authority on Nicaraguan literature, and Greg Simon, co-author of a memorable translation of "Poet in New York." Readers should be grateful for this selected Dario, which makes an ample selection of poetry and prose accessible to a new generation of English readers.

Ruben Dario was the first great Spanish symbolist poet and perhaps the greatest of all Latin American poets. It's good to see a substantial selection of his poetry in Spanish in accessible form. The English translations, however, are inept almost beyond belief. What the reader with some Spanish needs is a careful and competent trot, as in the wonderful "Penguin Book of Spanish Verse," where the translator gets every nuance.What the reader gets is verse translations in which every consideration of meaning is subordinated to the need for rhyme. Moreover, the translators, in the interest of a spurious readability, make no attempt to suggest the orotund classicizing side of Dario's diction. I have the impression that many such poems, among Dario's best, have been suppressed as too difficult and/or unfashionable. Finally, the translators apparently wouldn't recognize a literary allusion or quotation in the original if it fell on them.The Stavans introduction is just contemptible, as both biography and literary criticism. Stavans' prose style, as always, is just awful. Mr. Stavans, there is no such English word as "illusive"!I've never written an Amazon review before, but then I've rarely approached a book with such high hopes and been so disappointed.

I ordered 2 copies of this book. Delivery was prompt but one of the copies is defective, missing like 10 pages of the introduction. I was of course disappointed.

This book covers the period from the time that the some of the CAA founders worked at William Morris, how CAA was created, how it functioned in it's long heyday, and how it changed when the Young Turks took over after Ovitz left. If you've never seen the inside of the book or read any excerpts, it is not a narrative by the author; instead, it is a compilation of narratives by the founders of CAA, some of the agents, some actors, the Young Turks, and people on the periphery. If you don't know at least who these people are, this book may be very confusing to read. It does provide an interesting insight into the mindset of agents, how they function, what the job entails, and the "it's-good-to-be-King" philosophy of the major power brokers in Hollywood. Yes, they eat their young for breakfast in that town!Since the narratives are provided by the individuals themselves, I found that there was a lot of back-patting, and "he was so nice", "everybody loved him" etc. etc. etc. That was not genuine and clouded some of the book for me. Come on...this is Hollywood. If you're an agent, and a successful one, you would throw your mother off of a cliff or sell your firstborn to get the best client and/or deal. Having most of the people praise Ovitz when, in reality, he was to the right of Ghengis Khan, was feeble. But I suppose that most of the people in the book are still active in Hollywood so you never burn your bridges - especially in Tinseltown where the powers-that-be NEVER forget ANYTHING.Comments on the Kindle edition: BAD, BAD, BAD.....in what world do booksellers think they can just copy/paste a hardcover into a Kindle versionn?? It doesn't work. The formatting was terrible in many places; there were "bookmarks" already in the book - what's that about? and....there are photos but 99% of the photos are on one page and captions are either on the page before the photo or after the photo. So if you want to know who's-who in the photo to have to keep going back a page or forward to next page. Ugh!!! I find this is an issue with other Kindle versions of books and it astounds me that we can land a man on the moon but someone can't spend the time to format a hardcover book into a reader-version.

It's packed full of insider points of view. So it's very interesting in that respect. However, that positive comes at the cost of a rather odd style - the author has assembled quotes from those involved so that if a particular issue is covered one gets the POV of maybe 2-3-4 people involved in the event. And I assume these are pretty much verbatim quotes. Which is good if one is interested in hearing how the subjects talk, idioms, syntax, how they make a point - which is very useful -- but it's not literature, it's not a single voice narrative. So I found it a little emotionally rootless. It's more of a reporting style. There are so many contributors. Though the author would orient the reader to the players and their hierarchy I kept forgetting who had done what and said what which was important in reading the subtext of their commentary. I was familiar with a number of the names so had a vague notion of what was going on at the time, but I really could get lost if I left the book a few days or weeks and tried to come back to it. But all this said, it's a treasure trove of eye openers for anyone who has or aspires to have a big shot agent looking out for their career. It's about how the sausage is made.

If you like the "business" end of show business, this is the book for you. Miller is an excellent writer and Powerhouse is full of great stories, giving you a peek into the entertainment world and -- for me -- many reasons I'm glad not to be a part of it. The creation, evolution, and growth pains of CAA are told through its many voices, the owners, the workers, and the clientele. Miller's style is very different and may be jarring to some readers. I would advise getting used to it, as you are in for a fun ride here. All the complaints here on Amazon relate to his essentially quoting verbatim his interviews with the book's characters. It's really a massive interview, so one needs to settle down into that literary formula. You'll hear about Hollywood's glad-handling and backstabbing. I found myself laughing out loud at parts (an agent guarantees his client makes a flight to Paris by calling in a bomb threat to delay take-off. Stuff like that you can't make up). Buy and enjoy!

I purchased the kindle version of this book, hoping to get a leg up on developing Unity-based games. The book is supposed to have downloadable exercise files associated with it that you use when working through the examples. You are directed to a website to get these files. However ... when to go there the only 'link' (to access anything) is labelled 'Download your FREE Resource Pack!". It requires that you enter an email address and name and then press "Yes, I want to receive my bonus pack!" - whatever that is. Supposedly you will receive an email directing you to the downloads. Instead you get an email inviting you to subscribe to some sort of subscription. There are no signs whatsoever of the download files! Given the absence of these files, it is kinda hard to proceed with the book.

This book has no Table of Contents as a part of the actual book. This book and the companion website have no questions for the Quizes, only the answers, so they are useless. The companion website starts sending me spam messages after signing up. The images are too small to find out what is inside them. You should always explain everything using words in case the image doesn't make it obvious what you are supposed to do. Author's Notes boxes contain crucial information, not just comments as promised at the beginning of the book, so you need to read them instead of skipping them. Peculiar acronyms like MRB (Mouse Right Button) do not help the beginners with learning. All the images are for the OS X version of Unity, but beginners get confused when there are no images for the Windows version also. Downloading a huge complex project like the Viking Village is not the best way of teaching beginners with Unity as it takes multiple difficult procedures and a long time to import and download it. The author confuses Tabs with Views. Otherwise, this book does teach what it promises, so it's not totally bad.

First off I just want to say I never touched Unity 5 at all and I read through the entire book in about 12 hours even doing the bonus labs. It has given me great confidence and I know enough now to make a basic layout for a game.If you have never touched Unity, I highly recommend this book, if you have used Unity 4 or 5 at any version you are probably too advanced for this version of his book, go get the "beginners" or "intermediate" versions of Patricks books.Yes its a lot of money for the book $45.00 print edition (at the time of writing this review) that doesn't go very in-depth but the title didn't lie it says "Foundations" and he offers ebooks if you want to go that route for way cheaper.Now with that said I am a programmer with experience in various programming languages and I really appreciate the way Patrick guides you through on the usage of Unity 5 and walks you through hand in hand in the creation of basic layout of a game. His instructions were clear and with lots of screenshots! Some errors in the verbiage but you get the point and it won't stop you.Fantastic book overall for new people to Unity I plan to buy all in Patrick's series and I hope he comes out with more advanced versions.

As a new user to Unity, the book does a good job getting new users accustomed to the interface, and provides some great examples on creating basic designs. There are some typos here and there which is expected, as well as a few inconsistencies in what you are supposed to see on the screen as opposed to what shows in the book. This is probably due to version changes of Unity itself though (I was using 5.6.2f1), and the author should state the actual version being used in the book. You can usually find the actual option after mucking through the interface though.Note that there is no actual coding done in this book, with the exception of applying pre-written scripts to some objects. This is to teach you the interface, and you CAN create simple games just with dragging and dropping.As for the Kindle version of the book, there are issues with the images being too small to view. The author does a good job explaining what's in the image, but with differences in the version I have as opposed to what the author used, being able to view the image would have helped (like ambient lighting).

Full of errors, the book contradicts itself too many times, one page say something next one says the opposite, for example position 713 states that Unity uses a left handed coordinate system then in position 1016 says right handed; very basic thing like instruct you to do a zoom in when the intention is to do a zoom out, and is full of this kind of elemental error; very bad bad review of the author/editor before publishing to catch this kind of mistakes; on the other hand, is toooo basic and short in scope, you probably be better with some introduction free tutorial over internet.

Very well written book. I bought the kindle version and it was easily worth the price. I have been doing web development for many years using c# and have always wanted to get into video games. I have done some of the tutorial videos on Unity's website and they helped some but I was not making much progress. I decided to buy this book because I was interested in the content. Turns out it was a great buy. It walks you through all of the basics and gave me a much better and solid foundation of how to use Unity. It reads well and the pace moves quickly. Chapter 4 walks you through how to design a game map like Wolfenstein 3D (that's what it reminded me of). Chapter 5 has you build an island (like a way dumbed down version of Just Cause 3 but still pretty cool.) And so far I have not had to write any code. I was unaware that Unity had so much built in. If you are wanting to get started learning Unity this book is great.

I am fascinated with the Amish and wanted to understand more about their culture. This book is written to answer all the questions you may have about the Amish. From different wagons used to different colors worn. No technology is used and they go to school to the 8th grade then begin working with their families. I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot more about them. I highly recommend it if you are interested in their way of life.

This book answered all of any possible questions I had. A couple of weeks ago we drove through Lancaster as we have done many times before. This time I found myself thinking about specific questions I had as I looked out the window of our car. I marveled at the horse drawn buggies and the bearded men inside dressed in their Sunday finery. I told my stepson right there and then that I was going to do some research so that I could answer not only my questions, but his as well. If you have an inquiring mind as I do, this is the book that will answer those questions!

This was a very honest and helpful book that answered a lot of questions I had about the Amish. Of course there is much information on the internet about the Amish people, but this answered a lot of FAQ's that are not usually found on websites about the Amish.

I found this book to be a well written ground up how to on OpenMP. It is approachable by someone not well versed in parallel programming. I believe it was written before the wide scale advent of multi core architectures and in those pre multi core days most users of OpenMP would have been in the scientific community and have been interested largely in speeding up fortran codes. So the focus on the fortran constructs is understandable. However in todays world with every desktop equipped with a multi core cpu the book would be better with a stronger focus on c++. Despite the heavy focus on fortran examples the book does include information on using OpenMP from c++. I rate the book highly, because of its clarity, approachability, and style and hope future editions have a stronger showing of c++ examples.

Hoping for just information on OpenMP, I was pleased to find much information about issues with parallelizing algorithms. In fact, OpenMP itself is actually very tiny, easily fitting on a few quick reference cards. Applying OpenMP, or any multithreading for that matter, is what actually determines success. I was particularly pleased with the section on cache lines and their impact on design.

This book has many examples of how to parallelize Fortran 77 programs with loops using OpenMP directives, but coverage of how to parallelize Fortran 95 code using array operations is sparse. For this, one should read the tutorial "Parallel Programming in Fortran 95 using OpenMP", by Miguel Hermanns, available at the OpenMP web site.

I know some text books about this subject but this text resume the most important aspects about parallel programming in openmp.

Chandra et al. have put together a readable, helpful introduction to parallel programming with OpenMP. Unlike its major competitor, MPI, OpenMP assumes a shared memory model, in which every processor has the same view of the same address space as every other. At least as a start, this cuts the intellectual load way down. The programmer adds just one concept to the problem, parallelism, without adding buffering, communication networks, and lots of other stuff as well.After two introductory chapters, the authors introduce OpenMP in three stages: loop parallelism, general parallelism, and synchronization, roughly in order of increasing complexity. The authors present the necessary OpenMP pragmas and APIs at each step, showing how they address the immediate problems. An appendix summarizes the pragmas and APIs, in both their C/C++ and Fortran forms. OO C++ programmers may be dismayed by the amount of attention paid to an un-cool language like Fortran, but need to realize that it's still the lingua franca of performance programming. And, in fairness, the authors spend equal time on C++ idiosyncrasies, such as constructor invocations for variables that are silently replicated in each of the parallel threads.If you've ever done performance programming, you're groaningly aware that getting the parallelism right is actually the easy part. The tricky parts come in breaking dependencies, in scheduling, in ensuring spatial and temporal locality, and in dealing with cache coherency issues of multiprocessors. The authors give great introductions to all of the basics. This includes a patient description of how caches actually work, since there's a new crop of beginners every day. The authors describe performance analysis tools, but only briefly. The tools differ so much between vendors and between one rev and the next, that any detailed description would be useless to most readers immediately and obsolete for all readers very soon.This won't turn a beginner into the guru of performance computing. It will, however, establish a working competence in one popular parallelization tool, OpenMP, and in the computing technologies that affect parallel performance.//wiredweird

Perhaps as I matured, my thirst for murder, thank goodness, lessened, so it has been quite a while since I delved into true crime. But when I heard about Skip Hollandsworth’s The Midnight Assassin, I knew I had to read it. It has one of the things I like in a book: a compelling story set in Texas, my home state. Hollandsworth’s book is compelling, indeed. He spent hours and hours perusing old news stories, interviewing descendants, and peering over vintage photographs to piece together the story of the first serial killings in the US. We find, in the epilogue, that the author became so engrossed in his research that he had an overwhelming desire to solve these murders from well over a century ago. I won’t tell you if he did or not, for that would spoil the hunt. Hollandsworth, a journalist, does not just relate the murders, however. He also “sets the scene,” giving us copious details about Austin, Texas, at the time of the murders. And his writing style is far from cold journalism. While leading up to yet another murder, the author regales the good times, the calm, the everyday living going on in the town, and then he whops us with a two sentence chapter ending that sets us smack in the middle of yet another killing. And what makes this technique even more compelling is that not every chapter that utitilizes the “fun times” narrative ends with a gruesome murder, so we, the readers, are constantly wondering if he is leading up to another horrific crime or not. And along the way, we are treated to tales of the politicians, the lawmen, the doctors, the servants, the prominent citizens, and the blunders that made Austin the town it was in the late eighteen hundreds. This is fascinating journalism and fascinating story-telling.

In depth history of one of America's first (or possibly the first) serial killer set in 1880's Austin, TX.The book, while mostly interesting, reads really almost more like a research paper or a dissertation than a book. More time was spent describing events, styles and general happenings in 1885 Austin than dissecting the actual murders and their aftermath. I understand that the author had to work with the limited information available to him, but I felt more like a was reading a book about the politics of Austin, the building of the capital, the growth, the outdoor lighting and general philosophy of the day than reading a mystery.Definitely a well researched book, worth reading (particularly for Texans) and full of interesting tid bits of the day.

A fascinating study which combines all the fear generated by crimes of appalling depravity, investigative incompetence by "Town Hall", racial intolerance and political shenanigans in late 19th. Century Austin.As much a history of a city as of a crime, best summed up by the author's own words in his notes section: "In many ways, Austin became the most interesting character in the book, an intoxicating mixture of the Old South, the Old West, and the new Gilded Age. Because the murders affected every level of Austin society -from the most privileged members of white society to desperately impoverished African-Americans- I had a rare opportunity to create a portrait of race, class, gender, urban life, and, most significantly, the nature of American violence."

Lived in Texas all my life and never heard this story. Not only do you get a history lesson about Austin, Texas, but you will read a bizarre, grisly story that's chilling in every sense of the word. Who could be roaming the streets of Austin late at night killing women for no perceptible reason while often leaving their husbands or lovers damaged, but not dead. And not only killing them but inflicting horrific physical damage. The city becomes paralyzed while both local and imported law officers make no headway. Lots of detail given how long ago it happened (1885), but all necessary and informative.

Fans of Erik Larson will enjoy Midnight Assassin. (BTW, there are at least two other books out there titled Midnight Assassin, so make sure you get the one by Skip Hollandsworth.)In 1884 to 1885, someone was slaughtering women in Austin, Texas. Both black servants and white society women were targeted, and were killed by ax blows to the head. No one ever got a good look at the killer but witnesses insisted he was black. No, white. Bloodhounds brought in to track the killer could never get a proper scent since the crime scenes were trampled by family, police and the multitude of "lookie lou" townspeople.In 1888, when Jack the Ripper began carving up Whitechapel prostitutes, London police wondered if it was the American Midnight Assassin come to town.The reason I've mentioned Erik Larson is because Midnight Assassin is very much like Larson's book "The Devil in the White City" in which serial killer H.H. Holmes built a "murder hotel" at the 1893 World's Fair so he could experiment on, torture, and murder people who came to the fair.Midnight Assassin includes photos from 1880s Austin, and interesting facts about the city and its citizens.
