The author said himself in the introduction that: "The problem of the canon (at least as we are using the phrase here) refers to the fundamental question of how we, as Christians, can know that we have the right twenty-seven books in our New Testament".Kruger says of this important book that he is addressing the de jure question and not the de facto question (see Alvin Plantinga's "Warranted Christian Belief"). He says of the de jure question: "The de jure objection argues not so much that Christian belief in the canon is false, but that Christians have no rational basis for thinking they could ever know such a thing in the first place....it would be irrational for Christians to claim that they know these twenty-seven are the right ones. By contrast, a de facto objection to the idea of the canon is that there are factual problems with the Bible, and therefore the Bible should be rejected. Kruger takes an interesting approach in his apologetic for the canon. While others defend the factual basis of scripture, Kruger tackles the more difficult epistemological issue; namely: whether or not it is rational to believe in the canon in the first place.Kruger takes a two pronged approach in his defense.In part one, "determining the canonical model", he examines different qualities of the canon. First, the canon was received by the community (corporate reception). The church was able to identify (with the help of the Holy Spirit) what was canonical and what was not. Second, the canon was historically determined. It was written by apostles or close associates of apostles (apostolic origins). The testimony of the apostles and the early church leaders solidified the place of the various canonical books. Third, the canon possessed divine qualities. Jesus had promised that the Spirit of Truth would lead the church into all truth and that he would bring to their remembrance the things that Jesus had said. Canonical books contained within themselves qualities that made them gain acceptance by the early church as being canonical. Therefore, Kruger argues, the canon is self-authenticating. It is supported by the three pillars of corporate reception, apostolic origin and divine qualities. This approach by Kruger is important because his defense does not place all the eggs in one basket.In part two of the book, he treats the subject of how the canon was determined or identified by the early church. How did they decide whether or not a particular book was scripture or not? Kruger makes the important point that the core of the canon was formed early, while the periphery was solidified by the late third and early fourth centuries. There are some critics who argue that the canon was not settled and therefore could not really be called a canon. The critics cast doubt on the validity of the idea of a canon. They want to make it seem that the books were arbitrarily chosen by the faction of the church that had the most political power. Kruger deftly refutes this idea by showing that the gospels and Paul's letters for example were accepted by the early church as authoritative very early on.EvaluationI thought Kruger did a good job in answering the de jure objection to the idea of canon. Part one lays a strong foundation for part two. The qualities of the canon must be determined before the reception and definition of what the canon is, is answered. Kruger makes a strong case that is not easily dismissed by critics. It is a strong apologetic for the canon, and will be a welcome addition to the tools of the apologist's trade.ConclusionWhile this is an apologetics book, it really should be read by all Christians; by anyone who wants to understand more about the formation of the Bible. If you have ever been troubled by questions of why the Bible is the authority for the church, then you should read this book. It is well-argued, easy to follow, and gives excellent arguments for the defense of the canon. It really helps to fill the gap in our defense of the faith and our defense of the scripture where God has spoken.

Michael Kruger's book on the canon of the New Testament is, quite simply, the best treatment available on the subject. What sets this book apart is Kruger's application to the question of canon of the principle of multiple perspectives in theology and biblical studies (as most ably articulated and develooped by Vern Poythress and John Frame), which is not relativism, but a crucial and groundbreaking insight that enlightens every topic or discipline to which it is applied, and solves numerous stubborn difficulties. Kruger masterfully applies this insight to the question of canon, and thus is able to present a rationale for and defense of the New Testament canon that is unprecedented in its clarity, cogency, and comprehensiveness. Theologically astute readers understand that no presentation or argument will be convincing to those spiritually disposed to reject it; nevertheless, Michael Kruger's offering is, in this reviewer's judgment, better than anyone has done and about as good as anyone can do. Students and scholars seeking a responsible, scholarly, and logically impeccable case for the validity and authority of the traditional New Testament canon will find it here. Well done, Michael; well done.

Kruger shows how the Christian can with intellectual responsibility hold to the NT canon. By arguing for the three fold or three dimensional self-attesting view, he rightly places the authority of the scripture in God and not in historical studies or the ecclesiastical magisterium. He shows how in God's providence and inspiration the Apostles delivered to the church the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our NT canon. How precious is this word to his church. "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

This book provides deep discussion on how the books of New Testament were assemble. The depth of study provides clearly to a deep theological question of the authority of scripture. This has helped me better understand my faith in the living Word of the one true God.

Mr. Kruger in this book gives the interesting view the the New Testament was the canon within itself. The early church basicly accepted this view in the formation of our Bible today. I failed to give it the top rating because I felt that the order of the material could have been divided better. However, I liked the book because of the amount of great material for those who want to know more about the formation of the canon. This book would fit well on the shelf in the serious student office.

This is a brilliant answer to the issue of canon of the New Testament. The right-under-our-nose answer is truly heartwarming for the Christian who sees the scripture as the final authority in all things pertaining to life. I bought this book after reading another Sedgwick book, and I found that Revolver, though not quite as compelling as Midwinterblood, was still a fun, quick read that I enjoyed.

Revolver is part historical fiction (set in the frozen arctic in the early 1900's), part mystery (Did Sig's father steal gold from a prospector during the Alaska gold rush? If so, where is it?)and mostly a story of a young teen facing a life altering moral dilemma. Sig was raised by a stern but loving man who found ways to create a home and life for his family in unbearable conditions. His father taught him the world is a cruel place and sometimes requires cruel actions to survive. Sig was also raised by a mother and step-mother who were both very gentle, religious pacifists. When the story opens, to the family's dismay, their always careful and pragmatic father tried to cross the thawing lake, fell through the ice and died. Sig's sister and step-mother have gone to town for help. The contradictory parenting clashes when a sinister, violent man shows up at the family's arctic cabin the day after Sig's father died. Sig must deal with the angry visitor, Mr. Wolff, alone. Mr. Wolff says he will kill Sig if Sig does not turn over the gold stolen from him years before. After Sig is dead, he will wait for the sister and step-mother to return and give them the same ultimatum. Sig creates an opportunity to fetch his Dad's revolver and hide it on his person, but can he bring himself to kill Mr. Wolff? Revolver is very short and there is little action, but every page is tense with Sig's fear and Mr. Wolff's anger and the tension builds to a surprising and frightening climax.

This is a very good book. It tells the story of a hard life with hard decisions from a boys point of view. I would recommend this book to any young teen that is looking for an exciting read.

Full of twists and turns and "hold your breath" moments, kids and adults will love this story. It elicted an actual applause at the end from the kids I read this to.

The back cover blurb states that "new readers and nonspecialists will find this the most convenient, accessible guide to Aquinas currently in print." This is completely untrue. That doesn't make this a bad book, but it really is not an *introductory* book. It is a book for people who are familiar with very distilled forms of logical argument and are sufficiently convinced by such argument not to need further persuading. The authors of the chapters are university professors who have written whole books on particular aspects of Aquinas's thought, and their chapters read like distillates of such highly specialized research, rather than sociable introductions.A much better introduction is "Aquinas: a very short introduction" by Fergus Kerr (indeed very short, but precise and witty), and "Aquinas" by Frederic Copleston (out of print, but lucid and beautifully written).Like most great philosophers, Aquinas is demanding. His insights are surrounded by a terminology and a methodology of their own (or rather, by a terminology and a methodology developed by many thinkers, of which he is the paradigmatic example). For those who want to make an expedition into this arid but beautiful region of the mind, it is necessary to begin not by flying near the summit in a jet-plane, but by setting off on foot, after packing the right equipment in their bags. The two books cited above are a good first move in that direction. The next step should probably be to participate in a seminar or discussion group in which an actual text of Aquinas (normally the "Summa") is read and discussed.

Aquinas stands along with Augustine, Duns Scotus and Ockam as the greatest Christian theologian-philosophers of the medieval period. Yet quite often Aquinas's thought is overlooked in most philosophy courses which skip from Plato and Aristotle to Descartes. This volume helps remedy the situation by giving a rigorous and up to date precis of Aquinas's philosophical thought, from his metaphysics, theory of mind and cognition, ethics, and his relation to theology. The volume is edited with contributions from Stump and Kretzmann, who themselves are leading experts on medieval philosophy.This book is a must have for any serious student of Aquinas and medieval philosophy.

I had been waiting for this book for over a year and it didn’t disappoint! The authors of My Lady Jane are back with a fun and whimsical take on my favorite book, Jane Eyre!In this version there is a mysterious society looking to free ghosts from their earthly bonds, the Brontë siblings heavily featuring Charlotte, and a ghost named Helen. Written in a style very similar to The Princess Bride, this book has a lot of Easter eggs! Look for references to Scooby-Doo, Harry Potter, and The Princess Bride!My only complaints and reason this book did not get 5 stars is the constant references to how old Rochester was. Being someone who generally attracted to older men it really became quite bothersome. In that same vein, the ending is quite different. For me the ending of Jane Eyre is the whole purpose for reading the book.This book is recommended for teens on up. For my friends who don’t like the occasional ghost story, this book would not be for you. Otherwise it’s quite fun and laugh-out-loud funny!

This was such a fun read! It’s Jane Eyre with ghost! I loved the cute romances, the fun author commentary, and the way Jane was turned into a real person. Charlotte was the best character, fun, strong, and delightful. I loved the way they kept it in the Victorian era while also making fun of it at the same time. It was a relatively fast read and I’m glad I picked it up so fast!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the way The Lady Janies tell a story. That is just plain fact. They have managed to take one of my favorite novels/stories/characters/authors and weave a tale that was such a fun read, I hated having to put the book down to go about my day-to-day activities! First MY LADY JANE was so super fantastic that I purchased a copy in every conceivable book type (hardback, paperback, Kindle--not audio, YET) and now MY PLAIN JANE is so amazing that I know as soon as it is available in the various book types, I'll have to purchase them, too! And read the book again and each of those copies!!! Just because I can!!! And want to!!!Lady Janies, I promise that if we would ever have the opportunity to meet, we would be instant best friends because you are each of the race of Joseph.I LOVE attempting to figure out the references to pop culture that you include in your stories!!! I think there should be an app for your readers to attempt to share the references--the page numbers and specific references would be a must! I can't believe it took me so long to get the LORD OF THE RINGS reference! I'm so embarrassed! ;) lol!!!!

My Plain Jane was an amazing and wonderful book full of adventures, ghosts – LOTS OF GHOSTS👻 -, a haunted mansion😉 and just the right amount of romance😍 ALL THE SWOONS😍 It also has epic and wonderful characters that will make you laugh when you least expect it. I laughed A LOT while reading this book. Another thing that made this book feel extra special is that the authors “talk” to us in the story, I personally think that’s amazing, it made the story feel more special❤I highly recommend you guys to read this book, it was amazing from beginning to end, definitely one of the best books I have read this year…❤

I feel conflicted with this story. I appreciated the effort. I thought it was well-written. I definitely thought there were humorous parts, in fact, parts that made me laugh out loud.But.But.But.I found it hard to read this book. I found myself not wanting to pick it up at times. There were parts that felt boring and monotonous. The retelling of Jane Eyre is quite a tricky thing. One of the most classic romances of all time, and of course, we all know and are fully aware of how creepy Rochester actually is, but none of us actually care!That didn't bother me though. It didn't bother me that the authors of this book really displayed his creepiness to us all and the silliness of Jane.What did bother me is how uninteresting I found Jane to be. And Charlotte too. Both characters didn't stand out for me and did little to attract me to the story. It took me much longer to finish this book than it did My Lady Jane. A bit of a disappointment.

I got a kick out of this! It had the dry sarcasm and silliness that I appreciate, and it had me snorting out loud more than once. The only way to enjoy this novel is to leave your seriousness at the door. So definitely don't go in expecting this to be a serious retelling. In fact, don't go in with any expectations at all, because whatever you're expecting, it's not that, lol.The writers don't take anything in the novel seriously, even themselves, but they commit 100% to their chosen trajectory and it works. No, it's not for avid fans of the classic Jane/Rochester romance. Not at all, so don't get your hopes up. I can't explain without spoiling the premise of the novel - but it's not a romance between those two, at least, not really. That was the one thing that disappointed me. It was funny, and it worked for the story they were telling, but I was kind of bereft, wishing it hadn't been dumped so easily.Much of the contention was that it wasn't age appropriate, alluded to in jokes several times. Yeah, in the real world, I would be creeped out and not happy to see a 38 yr old man chasing after my 18 yr old daughter. But this is fiction, and set in another century, so it's not really the same thing. Still, the authors were adamant, lol, and I let it go, because the general story was so fun and different. And the ending isn't bad at all - it kind offers us Jane/Rochester shippers some relief.Helen the Ghost was ALL of us, at all the most memorable moments in Jane Eyre. I liked seeing Charlotte Bronte as a main character, and despite the outlandish premise, it felt believable. It's a creative, funny, silly, supernatural twist to the story you think you know!
