About the Author

David Abraham Adler (born April 10, 1947) is the author of nearly 200 books for children and young adults, most notably the Cam Jansen mystery series, the "Picture Book of..." series, and several acclaimed works about the Holocaust for young readers. Adler was born in New York City, New York. He graduated from Queens College in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics and education. For the next nine years, he worked as a mathematics teacher for the New York City Board of Education, while taking classes towards a master's degree in marketing, a degree he was awarded by New York University in 1971. In that same year, a question from his then-three-year-old nephew inspired Adler to write his first story, A Little at a Time, subsequently published by Random House in 1976. Adler's next project, a series of math books, drew on his experience as a math teacher. In 1977, he created his most famous character, Cam Jansen, originally featured in Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Stolen Diamonds, which was published that year. Adler married psychologist Renee Hamada in 1973, and their first child, Michael, was born in 1977. By that time Adler had taken a break from teaching and, while his wife continued her work, he stayed home, took care of Michael, and began a full-time writing career. Adler has three children and one grandson. He lives in Woodmere, New York.

Great for teaching young children our history. I loved the pics. This is maybe for a child maybe about 4 and older. I just wanted to surround my 2 year old with the info even if he didn't get it yet. We have to teach our children our history because they won't learn it anywhere else and this is a good place to start.

Great book for young readers and it has been added to our homeschool library

Adler's simple and easy style of writing makes these volumes a terrific addition to any classroom library. This particular volume on Marshall is insightful and human. I particularly enjoy pointing out that Justice Marshall was not always a perfect little student and sometimes was required by the principal to copy the Constitution. It's a great springboard when discussing the history of the civil rights movement. Greatness does not necessarily mean stardom. Justice Marshall's story is one to which all students should be introduced. My students love all the Adler books in my library, and this is my personal favorite.

Great read aloud for high school students who may never hear of this great man in all their high school years.

For me, the highlight of the book came with the chapter "There's No Place Like Home", which features the house maid Silky. I've always found her interesting and finally, Silky takes center stage with a very nice story that reveals her origins and will touch the heart of anyone who knows what it's like to wait a long time for their family to return home.

It's been a very long time since I have been so into a manga I literally count the days to the release of new chapters. This series is stunning, both for it's delightful artistry, but also for it's storytelling. The world is immersive, expansive, and feels limitless. The characters are captivating, compelling, and each chapter just leaves you wanting more. Hand's down one of the most thorough world's I've had the pleasure to get sucked into, the lore is just so wonderful and deeply integrated into the storytelling process it's a true gem and work of art. If you haven't given this series a try I urge you to do so, the anime is also wonderful and follows the manga to a T. Don't miss out on this on this one, you wont regret it!

This series has been hit or miss for me. I loved the initial premise and was intrigued by the setting and mythos of the story. Most manga fantasy deals with Japanese myths and legends. This one borrows from Celtic mythology in creating its fantasy world, and the result is a beautifully illustrated modern-day fairy tale.However, not all the individual chapters or story arcs in past volumes have held my interest. That's why I'm happy to say that this volume has been, for me, the best of the series so far. What makes this volume stand out is that each chapters revealed something new. In this volume, Chise faces a magical challenge that is both emotionally bittersweet and technically difficult for her to do. The consequences of her actions are troubling, but the aftermath takes us to new ground in the story. Even the chapter that is essentially a side story revealed something interesting to me about a minor character.As always, the full-color pages at the front of the book are GORGEOUS. The artist's ability to create a rich, vibrant world for Chise and Elias is one of the reasons why I've kept reading even during the volumes that didn't seem as strong as this one.For all of the above reasons, I'm giving the volume 5 stars. However: if Amazon let me take off half a star, I would give it 4.5 stars because of the unfolding romantic relationship. I was initially drawn to this manga in part because of what seemed like an intriguing romance. I don't mind immortal/mortal romances, and I am usually not bothered by a large age gap between characters. But there's no getting around the fact that Elias and Chise just do not work for me as a couple. I am not entirely sure why. If you look at past reviews of previous volumes, you'll see some readers talking about the fact that Chise doesn't seem to have very good reason for loving Elias. That may be part of the problem.But I think the main problem I have with the romance is the way that Elias seems to move back and forth between being parental and being romantic in his relation to Chise. Throughout the book, characters refer to Chise as Elias' "Fledgling," and talk about him taking her in as a child. And he does treat her as a ward much of the time, as if he were her parental guardian. And yet . . . she is also his prospective bride. If the story had chosen to focus just on his role as her future husband, I would accept their relationship as being an arranged marriage, and I might enjoy the romance despite the age gap. But I'm not comfortable with the way Elias acts like a parent to Chise most of the time with occasional loverlike moments. (Spoiler) The scene with the mistletoe is a good example. The kiss the two exchange is sweet and innocent . . . except for Elias' reaction.If you've already read volumes 1-4 of The Ancient Magus' Bride and are just wondering whether to buy the fifth volume, go ahead and buy it. It's a strong volume. If, however, you are on the fence about trying the series and are trying to get a sense of whether you'd like it, consider that this is both a supernatural romance and a teacher/student romance. Not everyone is comfortable with the latter kind of relationship.

Another amazing installment of The Ancient Magus' Bride. This volume is a little more tone downed than the others but is important for pushing the story forward with more information. If you don't already know, this series follows a girl named Chise who is captured by a man(?) named Elias.Though by saying so it sounds generic, the reasoning behind Elias's motives make the story interesting as Chise explores the diverse world that Kore Yamazaki puts her characters around.

This installment is the usual mix of intriguing, funny, and poignant. The author is a master of telling a beautifully sad story without it feeling schmaltzy or manipulative. Also, we take another step in the relationship between Chise and Elias. Yay!

The pace is slow and thoughtful and I am enjoying his rich and ranging take on western mythology. It is basically a quest story with a damaged and resourceful heroine at the center. The side stories and characters add to the depth. However, Kore Yamasaki's art would benefit from a larger format. Plus, I would be able to read the tiniest print without hunting up a bright light and/or magnifying glass.

I am new to manga, but have enjoyed this series.the style is drawing fits the storyline and the characters, while mystical, have depth beyond what I expected. I look forward to this story going forward and applaud the author for an interesting and entertaining read.

5th in this manga series that the anime was taken from. As pretty as the anime is, the manga demonstrates that little was necessary to make it so.

Another great story! 4 year old lives these books

my daughter (who is 6 years old ) loves these books bought the whole series. We read each one every night

My granddaughter requested this book before bedtime many times on her visits. Even after 2 years, it's one of her favorite picks; only, she reads it herself now! Good use of repetition for budding readers. They will also enjoy trying to keep track of the busy little monkeys in the fun illustrations.

I have read other books in this series with my three year old daughter, but this one really takes the monkey counting thing to the next level. Some monkeys go away, other monkeys join the group, and before you know it your little one is learning to add and subtract without a formal lesson! I always had to preface the book by telling my daughter that of course kids should never go where a grownup cannot see them in the store.

Kids love it!

Cute a bit longer than the others in the series.

Good reading to share with your child in a splendid afternoon.

Ya van dos veces que lo leo, el libro lo recomienda ya que con el paso del tiempo y por la falta de uso se olvidan ciertos principios y hábitos que debemos practicar.Después de la Biblia este es uno de mis libros favoritos.

Definitivamente un libro con muchísimos ejemplos para mejorar nuestra vida como empresarios, inclusive empleados, patrones y de igual forma en nuestro trato diario con personas de todo nivel y en cualquier circunstancia. Las 4 estrellas son por que a pesar de su excelente contenido tiene una pesima traducción al idioma español. Creo que tienes que ser bilingüe para entender que es lo que el traductor intenta decir. Por ejemplo entre unos de tantos; astros del cine, refiere a Movie Stars; Positivamente refiere a estar seguro de algo. Ya lo leerán ustedes pero si lo volvería a comprar. Y finalmente es un libro escrito hace muchos años, pero facilmente lo puedes auto ajustar a nuestra época. La cortesía, la honestidad, y la educación nunca pasan de moda. A mi me ha dado mucho resultado puesto que ya aplique sus enseñanzas.

The way the book is published is unfriendly. It's very disorganized. The chapters were written continuously without a separation pages. The letters are too small. I don't like the way it's published. It's very hard to read. I bought this book from other publishers and I'm very happy with them. It is not the content of this book, is the way it was published. I don't recommend at all this product. Buy this book from another publisher.

Después de leer ese te libro siento el gran de deseo poner en práctica todo lo que he aprendido en este libro, quisiera poder leerlo siempre y llevarlo perpetuamente en mi mente y corazón con el fin de lograr ser mejor persona. Lastima que solo hay 5 estrellas, pero yo califico este libro cómo es mejor libro que he leído hasta el momento. Hay habilidades que puedes adquirir dentro de este libro para mejorar tus relaciones es interpersonales y crear amigos. La verdad no tengo palabras estoy lleno de emoción.

I loved this book so much when I read it in English that I also wanted to read it in Spanish, and also share with my mom who speaks only Spanish. I highly recommend it. It is a timeless classic in any language. It is beautiful in its simple yet beautiful suggestions on "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Thank you kindly for such a great book.

I read this book about 25 years ago, and i got it againg, i just love it more now. If you want to learn how to have better realtionship, not only in your job but with your friend and family, yhis is the book.
