This cruising guide served us well throughout four months of Caribbean cruising. In thumbing through other books, I have yet to find any pilot book as thorough and useful. It is also good value for the money as it covers all the Leeward and Windward islands, using good detail despite the broad scope. We always found the information accurate and dependable. Detail charts of ports are very good (for example, all the wrecks at St Pierre are indicated) and it seems to have done a good job of keeping up with new developments in the islands (such as the new marinas being developed in Grenada and elsewhere). The information is well organized so that you can quickly find the pilot notes and easily distinguish them from other information such as the useful tips on things ashore. Traveling with Ghosts by Shannon Leone Fowler is an incredibly powerful and haunting memoir, a deeply personal story of love and loss that I found hard to put down and couldn’t wait to go back to – something that may sound a little strange to say about someone else’s harrowing experiences (the tragic death of her fiancé, her struggle with the way friends and family dealt with her loss, and her physical and emotional journey through countries and cultures that approach grief differently), but this is a book with an immediate, universal appeal. This comes not just from the themes covered, but also the author’s ability to grab the reader’s attention from the opening line and to keep that attention and interest up to the final word through very well-honed prose (this is a writer with a real talent for painting vivid pictures), and the way the story is told: the complex narrative is made of various flashbacks that could have been clumsy or confusing in less skilled hands, but the flow between present, recent past and older, childhood memories is in fact seamless: it is as if you were in the author’s head, with her thoughts – yet this is no stream of consciousness, there is a strong drive and logic to the construction, but effortless and natural. It works remarkably well, it helps to emphasize that the journey through grief is far from linear.This book made me cry, it made me laugh at times, but mainly, it made me think. A lot. Read it.

I read this astonishing memoir in one sitting - I couldn’t put it down. Fowler doesn’t sugarcoat or shy away from the awfulness of death, and her words stayed with me long after I finished the last page. I found myself wanting to travel to the places she described, and eat the food she was trying there. It’s a soul-searching journey about grief, survival, nature, chance, luck, loss and history. To anyone who’s ever lost someone, or knows someone who has – read this book!

A wonderful memoir, that reminds us to love as many moments with our loved ones as possible. But also shows us that Americans need to learn to treat death as it is, talk about it, face it front first, and hold each others hands when confronted with it. It is also an amazing story about how the rest of the work deals with death, and gives us a way forward.

This is a beautiful book, deep with love and loss and being in the world. Fowler's attention to detail brings us with her as she experiences the terrible circumstances of her fiance's death and her attempts to re-balance herself in the wider, not always safe, world. Love and loss and friendship all rendered in language rich with emotion and description. In rendering such specific and generous details, she also demonstrates the value of travelers keeping a journal of their journey, for their own sake, and in Fowler's case, for ours. I found this book brave and personal and painful to read, but ultimately fulfilling. We go on.

Normally, the best compliment you can give to any author is something along the lines of “I couldn’t put it down.” I can’t say that about Traveling with Ghosts by Shannon Leone Fowler. Instead, I say this book is so powerful, I had to put it down every 15 or 20 minutes. I needed to take time to catch my breath, slow my heartbeat, and reflect on what I’d just read.This memoir deals with grief and loss. Fowler puts us inside her head and we see the world as she does. We feel the emptiness, the despondency, and the guilt she felt when her fiancé died on a Thai beach. We feel, too, the outrage at the Thai authorities who knew of the danger and did nothing about it lest tourism suffer. Our hearts go out in gratitude to the two Israeli women, all too accustomed to dealing with death, who help Fowler come back to life. There are no easy answers provided in the book. Fowler’s sense of loss does not seem to attenuate, but her ability to accommodate herself to it does grow.

I finished this book in two sittings. The author intersperses memory with her loved one with narratives of travelling to different countries, some of which I also had visited, but many I had not. In an age where media tells women they should be afraid and are in need of protection, it was refreshing to read about a woman who charted her own course, confronted her past by confronting herself, and learned survival from her choice of destinations, many of which were poor, war-torn, and rebuilding. Highly recommend.

Perfectly written. A really hard story to tell. I lost three of my best friends during a field trip (I am also a biologist). The book made me feel a lot, I was sad, angry and meditating about life. I remebered losing my friends and how we had to recover. I spent my days at work thinking about Eastern Europe and the lessons she was learning. I searched information about the wars, I learned about history. I understood her passion for her job, but also how she didnt want to go back to it. I highly recommend it

Brilliantly constructed and poetically written. For anyone who has ever lost someone (which is just about everyone) this memoir is about the journeys we undergo trying to come to grips with grief. Powerful and moving.

This book contains many grammatical and lexical errors, which make a lot of sentences/questions void of any sense. There is at least one major error per page and there isn't much text on every page. This is especially a problem for the target audience because they are often not aware of them and learn everything incorrectly. This is absolutely ridiculous that a book supposed to teach English did not go through basic proofreading! Obviously, formatting and editing errors are also present, including cut off sentences or extra words. Definitely do not recommend for anyone trying to learn English!

Jamie Oliver grew up in his parents' country pub, the Cricketers in Clavering, where he started cooking at the age of eight, before studying at London's Westminster Catering College. My husband has food sensitivities, so I've been cooking at home for a long time. I mainly bought this book to generally support the movement and see what Jamie Oliver was up to with the Food Revolution. I didn't expect to really find many--if any--recipes that I would be able to use. But I did.The good:* TONS of photos. Every single recipe has photos, both of the finished dish and of the preparation. Yay!* He doesn't just give you the recipe (add 2 onions, chopped). He walks you though the process (Chop two onions and set aside). So you can usually cook as you read the recipe.* He tells you what to serve with the recipes, and the recipes for suggested sides are in the book. Yay!* Many of the recipes can be easily adapted for allergen-free cooking. My husband is senstive to gluten, corn, dairy, honey, legumes, and some nuts. That's a long list, and I was still able to adapt several recipes.* He offers recipes for all meals: breakfast food, lunch food, suppers, desserts. You could use this as your only cookbook.* The dessert section is amazing. We generally don't eat dessert in our house...at all. I think sugar makes you want more sugar, and it's a nasty cycle. But these desserts, while clearly luscious, include a lot of healthier stuff in the preparation, like fruit and oats. And the photos depict appropriate serving sizes. They look very elegant. I'm glad I'll have something wholesome to serve when company visits.The not so good:* There isn't any nutrition data for the recipes* Some of the recipes, while simple, can take some real time to prepare (fine by me, but I'm not trying to whip together dinner in a frenzy when I get home from work)* Many of the recipes serve 2 people. Which is fine, but it took me some time to adapt. I've purchased ingredients for a recipe only to realize later that I didn't get enough.In the end, the recipes are quite good. These are not recipes that will show up in Gourmet magazine. And they won't all make the list of the world's healthiest foods either. There are several comfort food recipes...spaghetti, stew, cheesy pastas, roasts. But overall, I'm pleased. Even experienced cooks will be able to find some things of interest here. And this is an awesome collection for someone trying to transition to real food from a diet full of McDonald's and pizza rolls.Update: I've cooked several more recipes from this book since I wrote this review, and I am growing more and more pleased. At first I blew off some of the recipes; I thought I didn't need another recipe for roasted chicken. But I made it, and it's great. I have cooked many recipes from the book now, and so far nothing has flopped. This is the only cookbook I own that I can say that about.Update #2: I'm still cooking from the book all the time. I'm a complete convert. I've purchased copies for other family members now...even for my total foodie of a father-in-law. We are all fans, and the majority of my everyday recipes now come from Jamie Oliver. Everyone knows I'm a Jamie Oliver fanatic now, so when people like something I cook they don't ask, "Where did you get the recipe?" They ask, "Is this from Jamie Oliver?" I've become a proselytizer for the book. And still, after all this time, nothing has flopped.

I bought this book 7 years ago, just after I had my first child and decided I wanted to up my cooking skills a bit. A friend of mine who had lived in London for several years and married someone from there recommended it -- she said her husband was used to always having home-cooked meals (something she wasn't used to) and they really enjoyed cooking from this cookbook together. I began making several recipes from it on a regular basis, and even gave a copy to a friend (a much more well-seasoned cook than I) who also really enjoyed it. Fast forward a few years -- we moved across the country and got busy renovating a house and had a second child and cooking from scratch fell by the wayside and all my cookbooks piled up. Last month, I decided it was time to step things up a bit and I pulled out this cookbook. My two boys (now 5 and 8) have absolutely loved what I've made so far and we've had a Jamie Oliver revival in our house. The beauty of this book is in its simplicity -- it's written in such a way that those who have never cooked from a recipe a day in their life would feel comfortable with how it's written (no fancy culinary words), yet a seasoned cook could still find inspiration. The dishes have a reasonable amount of ingredients, and most don't require anything unusual that you couldn't easily pick up in your grocery store. They are not too time consuming, either. The first time or two you make a recipe it may take a little longer, but once you get the hang of it it becomes much quicker. Our absolute favorite recipe is the Meatballs and Pasta. Everyone in the family enjoys it!

I can't recommend this cookbook enough. Perfect for newlyweds, single guys, and anyone who cooks, really! Even if you are an advanced cook, it has plenty of recipes that are practical, easy, and flavorful. I've never had a recipe fail. It covers a lot of basics, which are sometimes simplified, so don't expect the usual cookbook full of unique recipes (that you never actually try making). This book is sort of a crash course in home cooking, so you can refer to it for the everyday staples of family dinnertime. You might conceivably cook each one of these recipes. If you open it any given day, you'll easily find something you can make that very night, not on some special occasion.It really has changed my cooking for the better. Because of this book, I've learned how to make homemade salad dressings in seconds, whip up a quick and fresh curry, and throw together a cheap and rich pasta sauce.Jamie Oliver's writing style reflects how you really cook. No asking for 2 tablespoon of oil--he just tells you to pour a "glug" of olive oil in the pan. Cooking is rarely that precise about measurements anyway, unless it involves baking.Cheap is key here: I can cook an complete, Sunday-type dinner for less than $5 per person (and usually less). It sure beats fast food for cost, taste, and nutrition. Good stuff.

I am often asked to mentor other cooks and help them with new and unfamiliar cooking techniques. I remember how fearfully I approached roasting my first chicken. This book has proven not only an ideal resource for fairly new cooks but also proves its value for those who already know their way around the kitchen. I bought it for myself when it first came out, and I have given several copies as gifts since. It is a good antidote to the fear of cooking real food.

I'm a lazy cook who always thinks of reasons to buy prepared and processed food: kitchen too cluttered, dishes to do, a pitiful pantry from which to select, urgent places to be, etc, etc, etc. But this book, along with the tv series, has convinced me it's time to learn how to eat properly and nutritiously. The recipes are approachable and not intimidating, and as soon as I can use my kitchen, I'm going to try some of them...

Great book. I feel like this book gives good examples of worrying and how to cope with them. Also this book gives a lot of opportunity to branch activities off of it. I was overall impressed.

My 5 year old daughter is a big worry-wort. I don't know where she gets it from, but worry, worry, worry is what she does. A friend recommended this book, and I am so glad she did. I didn't give my daughter much background, just started reading. Wemberly worries about everything big and small. There are cute illustrations to go with each simply written page. At the end of the story, Wemberly makes a new friend and learns she does not need to worry so much.As I read the book to my daughter for the first time, her smile grew and grew, especially when we read about Wemberly rubbing the ears of her special rabbit, the way my daughter does with her "lovey." When we got to the end, she immediately asked me to read it again, and then again two more times. After the initial reads, we had a really good heart to heart about worries. Seeing Wemberly overcome her worries helped more than me saying "don't worry." I won't say my worry-wort has been magically reformed, but the book was a good conversation starter that was on her level. I highly recommend for the little worrier in your life.

This is a lovely book for little ones who are getting ready to start kindergarten or preschool. While this likely gets selected most of all for children who express a lot of worries, it’s also great to share with kids who are thrilled to try new things. Why? It gives them a chance to develop empathy and understanding for their friends — and for families to talk about how to help out friends who seem scared, nervous or shy.Overall, it’s a sweet, simple story about looking to adults and other kids when faced with fears.

A must-have book for your worriers, big or little. I once owned a business and had several really great kids working with me. One of them worried about EVERTHING ALL THE TIME. She was the kind of person who really didn't have to worry about anything. But she kept worrying . Now she is an elementary school teacher and she reads it every year to her "worriers". I also gave one to my own 15-year old worrier just recently. Wemberly will stay with whoever reads it for a lifetime.

Not my favorite story. I was hoping it would help with anxiety but I dont feel like it gets the message across very well. It wasnt relatable enough for us. Good book to practice the W sound if you need to though.

I purchased this book for my wife's four year old preschool class. It arrived quickly and in good shape. Book reviews, especially for preschool teaching material is hard to rate, but the children seemed to like the book and it worked great for the intended purpose.

Why do some authors/publishers persist on giving Kindle users images/designs/patterns with so much black...some of these designs have too much black. Let us, the colorists, decide if we want shading and what colors we will use. I have very, very seldom used black as shading for anything. While some of the swearing is original to me, I wasn't impressed with anything used here.NOT one link at end of coloring book is valid...All get Sorry - page not found msg from Amazon.

This is a funny and entertaining way to relax. I love these filthy coloring books.

I am disgusted with the language...I am surprised I ordered it! Guess I didn't read enough. The pictures are fine for coloring if one can get beyond the message.

There are definately some new eye popping swear words in this book, great patterns :)
