This is an important and fascinating historical document. It is rare that we have a narrative of one who remembers and recounts the journey from Africa to America, from free person to enslaved man. So, Zora Neale Hurston writing and working as a folklorist and cultural anthropologist took interest in the story of Kossula, the last surviving individual from the last slaving ship that touched down in Alabama in 1860, the Clotilda. Here we have the remembrances from the perspective of the captive. As Zora says; “All these words from the seller, but not one word from the sold. The Kings and Captains whose words moved ships. But not one word from the cargo. The thoughts of the “black ivory,” the “coin of Africa,” had no market value. She was on a mission to give value to the words of the sold and she did just that over a series of conversations with Kossula.“I had met Cudjo Lewis (his American name) for the first time in July 1927. I was sent by Dr. Franz Boas to get a firsthand report of the raid that had brought him to America and bondage, for Dr. Carter G. Woodson of the Journal of Negro History. I had talked with him in December of that same year and again in 1928.” The book is written in the vernacular dialect style and it takes a bit to get used to the rhythm, but once you fall in, you will remain locked to the page. I’m guessing Nora was aiming for authenticity and trying to present Kossula to the world the exact way she was hearing it. This might account, in some small way for the time between writing and publishing. The book was completed in 1931 and has just now, almost a century later been published. At least one publisher asked for Kossula’s life story in “language rather than dialect...... Hurston would not submit to such revision.”Although slave narratives are in publication, Kossula’s story takes us from his African home through three weeks in the barracoon (essentially a holding hut for the captives before they were loaded onto ships) to 45 days at sea and then dry land in Alabama. He spent five years in bondage before emancipation came. The majority of slave narratives in print detail their bondage here in America but rarely, if ever? have we had an intimate look from the motherland to America.Through these conversations, you can glimpse the culture and ways of being. “De ole folks, you unnerstand me, de wise ones, dey go out in de woods and gittee leaves—dey know which ones—an’ mashee de leaves wid water. Den dey paint de dead man all over wid dis so he doan spoil till de king come. Maybe de king doan git dere till de next day. When de king come, my grandfather, he come wid him. “Befo’ anybody see de king, we know he is almost dere, because we hear de drum.”The capture is given a detailed accounting but the middle passage is not discussed in depth, perhaps due to the harshness of memories. One thing that Kossula makes abundantly clear is the sense of loss and longing he always felt for his home. Deborah Plant does a masterful job setting the stage in her informative introduction that gives depth surrounding this project. There was some talk of plagiarism because Zora didn’t properly cite some sources she used for some of the folklore backgrounds. Seems to be, much ado about nothing.Zora’s talent as a writer was already shining as the reader will see here. This book was completed in 1931 and Her Eyes Were Watching God wasn’t published until 1937, her most famous work. This is a work that belongs on every shelf. Even the appendix and glossary contain valuable tidbits. “In spite of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the people on the continent, Europeans and Americans referred to them, collectively, as “Africans.” This resulted in the belief that “‘Africans’ sold their own sisters and brothers.” I think it’s important for the discussion of slavery that we make clear and conscious distinctions between perpetrators, collaborators, and victims. Five stars! Thanks to Edelweiss and HarperCollins for an advanced ebook. Book drops on May 8, 2018.

Born in 1841 to the Yoruba people in West Africa, Kossola told the story of how he was captured at age 19 during a brutal massacre at his village by Dahomian warriors and put on a slave ship. He was interviewed in his old age in 1927 by Zora Neale Hurston whom he trusted with details of his life that he hadn't given to any other interviewer. Kossola was, then, the last known survivor of the last slaveship that arrived in America before the Civil War, and he was lonely in his old age, his wife and children having predeceased him. He recalled many details of daily life and culture in his original home in Africa although he had lived for 67 years in America. He described his dual identity as “Edem etie ukum edem etie upar”: One part mahogany, one part ebony.Insightful historical commentary was provided by the current editor, Deborah G. Plant, bookending the interview transcription, and Alice Walker's helpful foreword gives a frame to help understand the impact of this narrative: "It resolutely records the atrocities African peoples inflicted on each other...This is, make no mistake, a harrowing read. We are being shown the wound....And we have suffered so much from this one [lie]: that Africans were only victims of the slave trade, not participants." Kossola also suffered at the hands of white people — having been enslaved until the end of the Civil War, lived under Jim Crow, and had a young son killed by a policeman — but this narrative is more heavily weighted toward his memories of Africa and how his sense of himself as an African impacted his life in America. Many of his traumatic memories are gruesome. All of his retelling is frank. A lot of thought has surrounded the curation of Hurston's interview manuscript over the years, and its publication today will surely be of great interest to many.

Such an important piece of literary history. Eighty seven years to become published. Too significant to be overlooked.

It’s a short read, so short you can miss some aspects that are just incredibly insightful. I had to take my time with this one. Zora Neale Hurston was a talented anthropologist that captured the minute pieces of history that could be missed if you weren’t paying attention, but when you do, it’s life changing. Fantastic!

I liked hearing the story in Kossola's own words. It gave me very rare insight into tribal life in Africa; first hand impressions of being captured, marched, sold, shipped, and worked as a slave for 6+ years. I am impressed by the way former slaves from his tribe banded together to buy land and form AfricaTown in Alabama. I am saddened that he was cheated by his lawyer and suffered so much pain along with his family. Above all, I am grateful to God for his long life and his willingness to share this story with Houston and us.

It's not a narrative; it's a beautifully rendered anthropological fieldwork. Zora Neale Hurston was a social scientist well ahead of her time.

More than any other book I’ve read in a long time it made me aware of what slavery was really like for those poor beings who were ripped from everything they’d known. It didn’t sugarcoat the African part of the process either. It made it believable.

Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best of the Month, November 2008: Now that he's gotten us talking about the viral life of ideas and the power of gut reactions, Malcolm Gladwell poses a more provocative question in Outliers: why do some people succeed, living remarkably productive and impactful lives, while so many more never reach their potential? Challenging our cherished belief of the "self-made man," he makes the democratic assertion that superstars don't arise out of nowhere, propelled by genius and talent: "they are invariably the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot." Examining the lives of outliers from Mozart to Bill Gates, he builds a convincing case for how successful people rise on a tide of advantages, "some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky." Outliers can be enjoyed for its bits of trivia, like why most pro hockey players were born in January, how many hours of practice it takes to master a skill, why the descendents of Jewish immigrant garment workers became the most powerful lawyers in New York, how a pilots' culture impacts their crash record, how a centuries-old culture of rice farming helps Asian kids master math. But there's more to it than that. Throughout all of these examples--and in more that delve into the social benefits of lighter skin color, and the reasons for school achievement gaps--Gladwell invites conversations about the complex ways privilege manifests in our culture. He leaves us pondering the gifts of our own history, and how the world could benefit if more of our kids were granted the opportunities to fulfill their remarkable potential. --Mari Malcolm

From Publishers Weekly

SignatureReviewed by Leslie ChangIn Outliers, Gladwell (The Tipping Point) once again proves masterful in a genre he essentially pioneered—the book that illuminates secret patterns behind everyday phenomena. His gift for spotting an intriguing mystery, luring the reader in, then gradually revealing his lessons in lucid prose, is on vivid display. Outliers begins with a provocative look at why certain five-year-old boys enjoy an advantage in ice hockey, and how these advantages accumulate over time. We learn what Bill Gates, the Beatles and Mozart had in common: along with talent and ambition, each enjoyed an unusual opportunity to intensively cultivate a skill that allowed them to rise above their peers. A detailed investigation of the unique culture and skills of Eastern European Jewish immigrants persuasively explains their rise in 20th-century New York, first in the garment trade and then in the legal profession. Through case studies ranging from Canadian junior hockey champions to the robber barons of the Gilded Age, from Asian math whizzes to software entrepreneurs to the rise of his own family in Jamaica, Gladwell tears down the myth of individual merit to explore how culture, circumstance, timing, birth and luck account for success—and how historical legacies can hold others back despite ample individual gifts. Even as we know how many of these stories end, Gladwell restores the suspense and serendipity to these narratives that make them fresh and surprising. One hazard of this genre is glibness. In seeking to understand why Asian children score higher on math tests, Gladwell explores the persistence and painstaking labor required to cultivate rice as it has been done in East Asia for thousands of years; though fascinating in its details, the study does not prove that a rice-growing heritage explains math prowess, as Gladwell asserts. Another pitfall is the urge to state the obvious: No one, Gladwell concludes in a chapter comparing a high-IQ failure named Chris Langan with the brilliantly successful J. Robert Oppenheimer, not rock stars, not professional athletes, not software billionaires and not even geniuses—ever makes it alone. But who in this day and age believes that a high intelligence quotient in itself promises success? In structuring his book against that assumption, Gladwell has set up a decidedly flimsy straw man. In the end it is the seemingly airtight nature of Gladwell's arguments that works against him. His conclusions are built almost exclusively on the findings of others—sociologists, psychologists, economists, historians—yet he rarely delves into the methodology behind those studies. And he is free to cherry-pick those cases that best illustrate his points; one is always left wondering about the data he evaluated and rejected because it did not support his argument, or perhaps contradicted it altogether. Real life is seldom as neat as it appears in a Malcolm Gladwell book. (Nov.)Leslie T. Chang is the author of Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China (Spiegel & Grau). #6,040 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Malcolm Gladwell, a writer for the New Yorker (wonderful articles on NFL concussions and NYC rubber rooms in 2009), released this book in the fall of 2008. It spent a few months on the non-fiction best seller list. Gladwell explains that stories of success are usually much more complicated than people (or the media) often make them appear. He writes that the American arch-type of the self-made man is really a myth, and that a great deal of success is often the result of a mixture of time, parents, practice, opportunity and chance.(1) A brilliant point that he offers is that 14 of the 75 richest people in world history (translated into 2008 dollars) were Americans born in the 1830's. He cites that they had to be young enough to avoid the pre-civil War mind-set but old enough to take advantage of the opportunities that Wall Street, the railroads and industrial manufacturing provided between 1865 and 1880. This was one of his several examples about the importance of being born at the right time.(2) Gladwell explained how most of the European immigrants who ended up in NYC in the late 1800's and early 1900's did not have a skill or trade. The Jews that came from Eastern Europe usually had some experience with clothing; as a result, NYC was the world center of garment making during the first half of the 20th century, and the new businesses that sprung up and flourished were almost entirely owned and run by Jews. The children of garment workers (and owners) learned the importance of persuasion, hustle, shrewdness and long hours. Many garment workers' children became professionals, such as doctors and lawyers.(3) He forwards the "10,000" rule in chapter 2 and cites that the Beatles were on stage for about 10,000 hours in Hamburg, Germany, and that experience transformed them into a band that could play lots of songs in a variety of different styles. Bill Gates also had 10,000 hours of practice on a computer in the late 60's, and Mozart wrote music for about 10,000 hours before he started turning out his greatest work.(4) The Beatles were given the opportunity to play in Hamburg because of the relationship that a booking agent from Liverpool had with some Germans. Gates had access to a computer because of where he grew up (going to a rich school that was close to the University of Washington) and who he knew (a friend's parents got them 24 hour access to computers around Seattle). Chris Langan, an American with an IQ of 195, never had many opportunities, and so his brain was largely squandered (which Gladwell details in his chapter "The Trouble with Geniuses, Part I").(5) There is a huge amount of luck that runs through all of these pieces. Working at something for 10,000 hours is individually driven, but timing, parents and opportunity has nothing to do with being self-made.Gladwell writes in the same style as ESPN's Bill Simmons (whose latest book he wrote the intro for). He is easy to follow, he is funny and he uses a great deal of footnotes. The great flaw in Gladwell's work is that while his arguments and connections are interesting and make sense, they are not driven by research or that much hard data. He relies on anecdotal stories and hammering his points repeatedly. He rarely provides an opposing view to his points.

This is not just a good book. This is an important book. One of the first things I realized in reading this book by Malcolm Gladwell is that his position is diametrically opposite from that of Dr. Ben Carson, who through his campaign for the presidency stated that "poverty is a state of mind." Carson emphasized that despite all odds he was able to pull himself out of poverty and become a neurosurgeon and accomplish the things he did.Gladwell's book states early that success doesn't happen in a vacuum. It isn't based on intelligence, but on a variety of factors, and he uses multiple examples to demonstrate that we as a nation could have many more successful people in our country if we were to accept that it takes a village to make successes out of our children. In fact, he shows that hard work and opportunity in almost all cases are more important than intelligence. One story tells of the Canadian hockey league and the fascinating statistic that the vast majority of all successful hockey players are born in January, February or March. Why? Because the cutoff date for signing children is January 1, and those born in the first three months have a distinct advantage in age, experience and size in relation to those they play against. That same cutoff date is used by other countries, such as the Czech Republic, for not only hockey but soccer as well, which means that children born in the later part of the year consistently are overlooked when it comes to team sports. It's a built-in bias. These biases are all around us, and determine who succeeds or fails, constantly. In addition, the bias of a culture has a significant effect on how well a student does. Gladwell talks about the belief that Asians are better at math, which he shows is because their languages are more number-friendly, leading children to count earlier, and which make math simpler. In addition, he shows the inherent tradition of hard work of southern China had resulted in a work ethic for their descendants that continues today. Many of the stories are supported with statistics. One of the most eye-opening to me was his observation of the impact on summer vacation. Statistics show that the amount that lower-, middle-, and upper-class students learn in elementary school each year isn't that significantly different. But when you compare what they learn or forget over summer vacation, there is a significant discrepancy. Upper-class parents keep their children busy with lessons and classes all summer, while in most situations lower and even middle-class students don't do much during the summer and often forget much of what they have learned the previous year. As the summers add up, the problem compounds. And so the difference between upper, middle and lower class widens. The book is significant, easy to read, and extremely thought provoking. I highly recommend it.

There are three sections in this book:Part 1: The 7 Elements of Great DesignPart 2: Atmosphere at HomePart 3: Details Complete the DesignIn the first section Howard, covers his elements of design: Style, Scale & Proportion, Rhythm, Light, Color, Texture, and Sound. As a layperson with a small library of design books, I found this section a bit tedious and boring to read. The first 6 elements are things that are commonly discussed in design books, with sound being the only concept that was a bit unique. For me, this section didn’t add anything of value. Perhaps someone new to design books might find something helpful, although with only 1-2 pages of text and mostly photos this is not a how-to book. The second section is the heart of the book where Howard showcases 5 of his projects, including his own home in the Hamptons. There are lots of neutrals throughout, although he does also use blue and a few other colors here and there. As I read the chapter on the designer’s home and he mentioned that it was built by Bobby McAlpine, I felt a certain ‘ah-ha’ moment as there is a certain similarity in Howard’s style. I pulled out McAlpine’s Poetry of Place and confirmed my feeling, although McAlpine’s interiors have more drama and interest. In viewing each of the kitchens in this book, I felt that the designer needed to spread out of his comfort zone as they all seemed very similar. Lots of white marble, most with white cabinets (although one adds black as well), and even similar light fixtures show up in a few of them. The kitchens are large and with all the white and bright surfaces, they also seem a bit industrial.I would have liked more variety in the different projects, although he did have one beautiful dining room, I found most of the homes a bit too similar in décor for my preference. Lot of neutrals and modern art, mixed with more classic yet modern furniture. The third section, Details Complete the Design, seemed like an afterthought. With only one page of text, 5 pages of photos it didn’t add much to the book.

A gorgeous book with superior design and execution- chic, eclectic and breath taking.

Howard created the WOW factor with Atmosphere! His ability to combine architecture and interior design is a gift.I was excited to read this book and get somepointers decorating our home. Really helped us find a few simple additions for the “space” we have to work with. Highly recommended this book to anyone who likes architectural design or brilliant ideas on creating your ideal living space.

Jim does a fastidious job of designing incredible projects around the world. His attention to detail coupled with architectural and design knowledge creates emphatic interiors that beg to be explored. Everyone will gain something from the books gorgeous images and descriptive texts. A fantastic testament to Jim’s talent as a designer!! Cannot recommend this book enough!!

This is a great book for anyone interested in interiors, architecture and all of the intricate details that go into designing a beautiful, truly stunning space. The images of his detail work are on another level! I would give it 10 stars if I could. Wonderful job on this book and hope there are more to come!

What a truly inspiring book for anyone interested in interior design and/or architecture! It is clear from the beautifully detailed images of his work that James is passionate about the fundamentals of design. Atmosphere now proudly sits on my coffee table at home. Thanks for an unforgettable read!

Highly recommend this book if you are looking to learn some real fundamentals of great design. The variety of photos from projects show that no matter the style or scale James has a real talent for taking the design up a notch! So glad I got this book!

Was thrilled to finally get my hands on this book. Jim Howard is a master at attention to detail and this book showcases just that. Each photo is stunning and beautiful. A must buy for any interior design enthusiast.

Disclaimer: I received a free ecopy via Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for an honest review. This is a decent space military story. I felt like I was reading a book inspired by Battlestar Galactica or something similar. However, I feel like there was too much crammed into this book. At times the story jumped forward, not in a jarring way, but I felt like the creators could have expanded on some aspects of the story that might have been pruned back because of the medium used.Markos Kloos has a series of novels in the same setting and I would consider picking one up because what is present here is interesting. The alien invaders, known as Lankies, seem well thought out. And Col. Yamin is a relatable protagonist. She is put in some very tough positions. Her decisions don't always work out, but that makes the story more interesting. The art is fine. Nothing too exciting. There are a couple panels that felt like they were repurposed though. Sort of as if the way the story was written was changed and the panels were already done so they were changed to fit the new path. Not sure if that is what happened here, but it is the impression that I get. I like stories that fit into this genre and this one holds its own.

First, let me say that I do not like Graphic Novels on Kindle. I did not know this until I won this title from Goodreads. It may just be the size of the Kindle Fire, but a genre that is an integrated work of illustrations and short direct dialogue was difficult to do it justice on an electronic medium. That being said, I enjoyed this collection of comics about the Earth vs the Lankies. Col. Yamin is believable, caught between her position in the military and her family back on Earth. Ride along with the Col. as she navigates the battle, limps home on a damaged ship, and makes hard choices regarding her families future.

I do not know what happened here... I bought this because the novels were awesome. The graphic novel did good for interpreting the writers description of the aliens and ships but nothing more... the story is fragmented... short... boring... it cuts from scene to scene and is very difficult to follow. I would pass on this... go in to your local bookstore or comic book store... read it off the shelf in five or ten minutes... and then... shelf it.

Disappointed! Gave some visual context to the complimenting books. I liked the books better. Speaking of which...when is the next book! Keep the books coming

Since this is based on the Frontlines series of novels I'm assuming this will be the first of a series of adaptations. This has both great art and writing and I hope there will be more of this in the future.

Interesting story set in the Frontlinrs verse . Major Jackson seems to have become the glue to link the Graphic and one off stories with the main series. I recommend this book and it helps fill the gap while waiting for the next novel.

Definitely the weakest addition to the Frontlines series. The art was very... bland. The story was interesting but felt rushed, I think that if they had given it a little longer of a run period (maybe an extra issue or two) then the plot would've felt more cohesive.

I won a copy on Goodreads Firstreads.Earth has been fighting an alien race. They really haven't been able to do much though, the aliens are too powerful. Now those aliens have made it to Earth. This is a graphic novel collection of the first four issues of the comics. It covers the beginning of the battle for Earth. There isn't a lot of background given so if you aren't familiar with the series of novels, you might feel a little lost at times. This seems to be a very good start to a series. There is plenty of action and the storyline is interesting. The characters are easy to like as well. The artwork is nicely done. It is what I call realistic comic book. There is plenty of detail and consistency. Since it is a comic book, everyone is in great shape.I can easily see this being a nice introduction to this world setting and readers wanting to explore more. Established fans of the series should also be happy with it.

This book tells a lot about demolition. Lots of photos which are not needed. But an overall good book. Many rules that are done regarding a demolition are not mentioned that should be. For example, when demolishing a structure, it is best that any reclamation of wood, steel, or other items from the building structure prior to demolition be supervised. As, removing removing building supports can cause the building to fall differently. There are a few other minor issues, but its a god book. I would like to be able to purchase less expensive paperbacks though.

Amazing book for all beginners in the demo industry. Hits all the topics from start to finish. I highly recommend anyone looking to get into this industry or any new intern/co-op at a demo company.

First off, I am in now way affiliated with these authors, publishers, or trying to promote anything within its pages. If this book isn't suggested study material for every state contracting licensing exam, it should be. Very informative and very comprehensive. The authors were dead on and know their field extremely well. On a business level, I would never recommend this book, (upper hand to the competition !). Unfortunately, I still have a small amount of honor and integrity left in me since becomming a contractor and I have to give this book the recognition and praise it deserves. Great job guys!

Very dry material. Much like a school textbook.

VERY SIMPLISTIC BUT DOES COVER THE SUBJECT. GOOD PHOTOGRAPHS USED TO DISCUSS THE DEMOLITION PROCESS AND DETAIL THE PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED.

This book was a quick over view of the practice of demolition! Does not go into great detail on any one subject but covers nearly every subject on the surface! Good place to start and supplies places to look for next reading!

Good to get started. possibly get you big picture and understand industry aspects.Recommend it as a tool of drawing the starting point
