Splendid read

The Inviting Garden did just what it set out to do: invite me to explore all my senses as a gardener. It isn't a picture book of perfect gardens, although the photographs are very nice. Rather, Mr. Lacy uses the same techniques to construct his book as he might use to design his garden. He balances his own personal stories with bits of plant history and botanical reference and every word begs to be read. This is a delightful book and deserves to be on the bedside table of every dedicated or aspiring gardener.

I was expecting a bit more botany as well--other wise, quite good.

This is a lovely and inspiring book by the late Mr. Lacy, one that made me long for spring so that I can work in the garden. The first part is built around the five senses, one chapter per- tasting herbs and vegetables; listening to fountains, wind chimes and birds; feeling soft lamb’s ears and soft earth; smelling roses, lilies, and mock orange; and of course viewing the many flowers and leaves that the garden offers us. For the mind section he ventures into botanical nomenclature; how much there is to know about even one plant and how it works (especially if you get into the biome in which it grows, including insects and soil critters); the history of plant discoveries; floral legends; and how the American yard turned out like it has- mostly lawn and open to view. Spirit is basically that gardening is not a hobby, but a way of being that absorbs one.This is not a coffee table book, but it contains a lot of gorgeous photographs. All make you long to step into them and enjoy the garden portrayed. His writing wanders at times; when he describes a plant we are apt to learn about its history and uses as well as how it looks. It’s rather like being in the garden and talking with a very educated plantsman. Five stars.

I own and have read all Allen Lacy's books and recommend them to anyone who wants to be better acquainted with the how-to aspect of gardening. I also recommend Lacy's books to those who seek a deeper experience with the natural world. Allen taught philosopy for years, and although his books mainly focus on horticulture, he includes relevant historical antecedents and existential angles in his writing that may help one better understand why humans imagine paradise is a garden.I read THE INVITING GARDEN when it was first published a few years ago, but it is as timely and relevant today as it was when it was first published--why it has been reprinted. Compared with his other books, TIG contains many more photographs and much less text, but the photographs are some of the most beautiful I have seen in a garden book, and I am a garden book junkie.Because many of his garden shots include children, the book is a real pick-me-up. Lacy shows his own granddaughter on his deck in New Jersey, a little boy poking branches into the soft bottom of a creek bed, and children here and there in various gardens in the U.S. and Europe. I especially like the shot of a very little girl with her arms around a huge tree at Versailles. With her feet placed on a protuding root, she is poised as if she is about to climb the tree, which is at least five feet across at the base. The imagination of children is a wonderous thing, but it also opens up my imagination and helps me appreciate why trees figure so prominently in human mythology and religion. Lacy has written elsewhere that he thinks trees are sentient beings and I do to.Lacy has organized his book according to the five human senses. Chapters cover the garden and the sense of sight (there are many beautiful shots of gardens around the country and in England and France); smell (shots show flower examples from Roses to Nicotiana (flowering tobacco), shrubs like Winter Jasmine, and herbs (one photo shows a box garden in Charleston with Rosemary accents); touch; taste; and hearing.Hearing?? What can one hear in the garden? Well to start with of course one can hear bird calls, buzzing bees, and wind chimes. But one can also hear the breeze blowing through high trees and grasses, as well as the burbling of water in a creek or manmade pond. Photos from a garden in California show a clay face mask lying underwater on the floor of a pond. Moss grows over the mask and bubbles of air pass through mouth to make lovely gurgling sounds (according to Lacy). In another shot, a clay mask is positioned among grasses so that the wind passing through emits a whispering sound.Whether you garden or not, this wonderful book can help you push away the blues.

This title is technically well written and easy to read, but expends the vast majority of its pages recounting the writer's own personal and professional history as a restraunteur in New York City, rather than focusing primarily on the lessons of management and hospitality the author states to have learned over his career. While some amount of personal and professional history would be necessary to place the book in context, the author spends so much time on his own story that the book frequently becomes boring at best and self-indulgent at worst. Actual sections dedicated to principles of management and customer service amount to only a chapter or chapter and a half at best, with a few additional pithy maxims inserted here and there throughout the author's various personal recollections. A good read for those interested in personal memoir or the restaurant industry in general, but might leave more to be desired for those in the wider business community.

This book was recommended to me by a chef of a Michelin-rated restaurant as his "bible". I am not a chef, but I wanted to find out what was so important in this book. It is about "enlightened hospitality" as the key to the restaurant business, and this can be extrapolated to any business. The author, Danny Meyer, has set up several successful restaurants in New York, and this is his autobiography. The book is easy to read. The action moves quickly. The flowing anecdotes are interspersed with clear presentations of Meyer's philosophy for handling employees, guests, the community, suppliers, and investors, in that order of priority. I will be studying Meyer's philosophy to see how I can apply it to my own business. I recommend this book to any entrepreneur who wants to be inspired by the experiences of a man who isn't willing to be second-best when it comes to his restaurant business.

A great book for any person in the business world not just the restaurant but also in the corporate world. Like CEOs executive could really benefit from Danny Myers inside thought and strategy that he shares with Dustin is booked. As a chef and restaurant owner I totally can relate and identify with Danny on his for teaching plan in the hospitality business. This book gave me great insight and opened up my mind and my business sense it to a new level. Great job

Danny Meyer lays out some knowledge, wisdom, and business philosophy in this book that is invaluable. Like Danny, much of what I have learned in the Food & Beverage Industry over the years has led me to intuitively come to certain conclusions about how things are to be done. I was really taken aback when I saw many of the same principles on paper in front of me, put there by a hugely successful man in the business. I was beginning to feel like I was alone, or at least a very rare breed, in thinking this way. I've been stuck in a very unprofessional area for the last 6 years and have been trying my best to uphold what I believe are the values in doing business the right way. I have met with much opposition by the ownership in many places here who do not have a background in the business and who see things differently. This has led to a plethora of mediocre establishments and many who can't even be called that. Many are now closed and just get gobbled up by the crappy chains that abound here. I wish every person who owns or plans on opening a restaurant would read this and take it to heart. You may not agree with 100% of it. I know I didn't. But I could not find fault with hardly any of it. Danny is a guy who has heart and soul. He is a shining example of somebody in it for all the right reasons.

Setting the Table by Danny Meyer provides lots of value for business leaders. I ranked this book five stars based on the value alone. The reader should be apprised that the book is written as a memoir of Mr. Meyer's experience in the restaurant business.As a business leader you should study excellence in your industry and outside of your industry and there are numerous take-aways in Setting the Table that can be applied to any business. Here are ten excellent points I took away from Mr. Meyer's book.1. The Excellence Reflex - "A natural reaction to fix something that isn't right, or to improve something that could be better." The excellent reflex is a natural reaction that some people have and cannot be taught. Meyer trains his leaders how hire those that have it.2. Employees can be categorized as Overwhelmers, Whelmers, and Underwhelmers. It is easy to identify Underwhelmers and get rid of them. The most dangerous employees are the Whelmers because "they infuse an organization and its staff with mediocrity...and send a dangerous message to your staff and guests that "average" is acceptable."3. Coaching is correcting with dignity.4. You obtain valuable leadership skills while managing volunteers. It requires you to consistently motivate employees beyond their earnings.5. Create a sense of "shared ownership" with your customers by taking an interest in them and making them feel important. They will view you as a partner instead of a provider.6. ABCD - Always Be Collecting Dots. You should aggressively collect lots of little information about your customer (dots) as they interact with your product or service. Then make the connection between the dots as a mechanism to improve your product or service to all customers.7. Customers may love your product or service but the relationship that they have with you or your employees is what builds loyalty. Therefore you should take every opportunity to exceed expectations to create a lasting relationship.8. Enlightened Hospitality - "We would define our successes and our failures in terms of the degree to which we had championed, first, one another and then our guests, community, suppliers and investors." This is an extremely powerful concept and is rooted in the integrity theme Meyer has throughout the book. You can't expect employees that don't treat each other with respect, who can't be hospitable with one another to then turn around and treat the customer with respect and high levels of hospitality a customer deserves. Poor relationships internal to the organization migrate to poor relationships external to the organization. Ultimately being last on the list benefits the investor by long term organizational success.9. Judge your staff on 51 percent emotional job performance and 49 percent technical job performance. You can always teach technical while emotional is much harder if not impossible to develop. Lack of emotional job performance skills destroys teams and alienates customers.10. "The road to success is paved with mistakes well handled" and "the worst mistake is not to figure out some way to end up in a better place after having made a mistake."The ten points above are obviously more powerful in the context of the book when illustrated with Mr. Meyer's stories and experiences.Dr. James T. This was a birthday gift for my wife who is a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan. Shortly after she began reading this book, she started sharing some of the anecdotes with me. After an hour immersed in the book, she marked her spot and offered to let me read it. What a great book! Ever wonder why they are called the Penguins? The humorous explanation is given here. The day that Mario Lemieux brought the team out of bankruptcy is recounted, as well as the day he announced he was returning as a player ("This changes everything" being the general sentiment after the announcement). Coach Herb Brooks taking on a Colorado television commentator for a verbal cheap shot on one of his players, the (at the time) third longest game in league history and, just a few years later, another marathon overtime game...these stories and so many others are told in this lively book. Highly recommended for Penguins fans or, for that matter, fans of the game.

So glad to finally have this book back in stock on Amazon! This is quite the collection... more than 200 pages of Pens history in one collection. Perfect for every fan, from the know-it-all to a team novice, the book features stories that give you great insight into the Penguins bench... past and present. The author is a local Pittsburgh sports writer who has logged countless hours following the team and reporting from the locker room. This kind of rare access resulted in a book only someone who has spent time on the "inside" could deliver.

My husband bought this book for himself. He is all about the penguins and usually does not read many books but this sparked his interest. He wo ukd air every night reading this. I asked him to review out of 5 stars and he sais 5 stars!

Every serious Pens fan should have this book. It’s loaded with short facts and one paragraph stories... great for guys like me with a short attention span. Starkey did a great job on this.

The book does provide general information but you will need to determine what applies to what state you live and your situation with your neighbor. Laws can very by city and county. How to approach your neighbor is important as the maybe renters not owners. This book is a good start , you will need to do some investigating to make sure what your rights and responsibilities are ,verses the neighbor(s) .

Very informative - I do not know the law but this book was a great guide to understanding how to decipher what is appropriate behavior by neighbors.

I like this book for what it has to offer. Full of good info to keep as a reference. It arrived quickly and in better condition than anticipated.

I updated this from a version of about 15 years ago. Very good information. I used it to help me prepare a Private Nuisance small claim case against a neighbor. This book took me through all the steps necessary to do this.

This is a good resource for basic information. It still does not replace the advocate in order to get the real results.

The title of this book is misleading. Other than some discussions on depreciation of real and personal property, this book was written for the person making $50k-$150k and really doesn't offer much of anything for those making higher sums. Not that it was all bad, but depreciation is pretty well known by most business owners or real estate investors. The examples of how she helped other clients save money on taxes at the end, were more a result of correcting bone head decisions, rather than being creative in helping to lessen a tax burden. Anyway, it's apparent that the writer knows her stuff and perhaps I went in with the wrong expectations- looking for lesser known concepts on how to reduce tax obligations for somebody earning $250k/yr +, which still isn't "Rich" in my opinion, but doing well enough that they're annoyed with the amount they pay Uncle Sam each quarter. I was pretty disappointed in the content overall and felt it was to tax strategy as "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" was to real estate investing. In other words, it's motivating and encouraging to the person that one day wants to get rich, but of little use to the person who already owns a business or invests quite a bit in real estate and is familiar with the basic concepts of write offs, depreciation and understands the difference between a C Corp, S Corp and an LLC.

For me, it was apparent by about page 60, that Diane Kennedy is a brilliant tax strategist. Having always been baffled by the rules of taxes, I took an 8 week class offered by a large tax agency. During this class, I did a case study involving a self-employed person with an income of $170,000 a year. My answer on the case study was that the annual federal taxes due were about $70,000! Yikes! That's about the 41% tax bracket including self employment tax. I thought for sure that my answer was incorrect. Nope. That's the way it is for the high-income self-employed with no deductions and all income subject to the self-employement tax, which has no limit for the self-employed. That's when I knew I had to learn from someone who knew the ropes. Fortunately, I came upon this book a bit early in my search. I found loop holes that can effectively keep the self employed wanting to go to work at the same time they are not violating any tax laws. Thank you Diane Kennedy for writing such a useful book and educating the lot of us who have spent our work lives as self-employed.

This book is filled with fluff and doesn't offer any loopholes. Diane is simply using this books to solicit new clients.

The books title was challenging for me initially, but I'm about a a third of the way through it and the book is a must read for anyone interested in understanding wealth management. In Loopholes of the Rich while Ms. Kennedy strongly encourages that we pay taxes, she also shares strategies designed to minimize the amount of tax paid in order to build wealth. This book explains the benefit of understanding the system, and the power of building a team of advisors. For people seeking to grow personal wealth and financial freedom this book is a must read.

I expected to learn something with this book but did not.If I do, it will be buried in so much blah blah blah that I'll be too numb to see it.Positive reviews would have to be written by someone who knows absolutely nothing or is friends with the author.Save your money and buy Rowley's "corporate strategy handbook" if you can find it. That would be a beginning.The advanced stuff is obviously being kept secret by expensive consultants.This is just another stack of paper full of what you know just to fill out the page count so you will buy it.If it were with my time to do so, I would return it.

It's Not How Much Money You Make, It's How Much Money You Keep.The title of this book is accurate, and it could have also been entitled, "Loop-Holes Of Those With Common Sense." There are numerous advantages available to those who take the risk and have the creativity and fortitude to do something on their own. These people are compensated for it if they educate themselves and IF they succeed. And on the contrary, being an employee is for most people. Much less control but some security, the routine of the comfort zone, and a familiar role defined within the job and confines of a corporate or governmental job. But today, for the employee, is there job security? Is there a routine and comfort zone? Will your job be there for you every morning? And, when it's not, will it be gone by your choosing or your employers?After only a few chapters we'll once again be reminded of the futility of being a W-2 working stiff, perfunctorily accepting the crumbs that are left over after taxes. This book will be most beneficial to people who have recently, or have now just started to change, the way they think. Experienced small business folks, entrepreneurs, and MLMers, will likely (but not necessarily) already have most of this information down.The premise of "Loop-Holes" provides us with the facts: since the 1943 federal tax law tragedy Americans work, pay taxes, earn, then spend. All in that order. After taxes and paying expenses, what's left for the middle class person who works as an employee? Ask yourself how much YOU have left. Whether your a service sector employee or upper-middle class professional, how much of the money you earn, goes in your pocket? And of what does go into your pocket, how much of it stays there? If you file a W-2 and are classified as an employee you will work a lot, but you are not likely to "make money." But you will have the liabilities (<--Kiyosaki) of a mortgage, car payment, credit card debt, and dinner out at a local budget franchise, once a week as a treat. Welcome to the reality of 2003, America. The common notion of getting raises at work as an employee to earn a higher income has unfortunately become a fallacy today. Kennedy's information is contemporary, valuable, and necessary knowledge that we need on how to proceed in making our lives better. To pay an advisor for this knowledge would be costly.These is a lot of practical information and real-life examples provided in Loop-Holes:If your starting a business in hopes of receiving passive income in the future, there are 9 criteria the IRS uses to qualify your gig as a "true business" and not a "hobby business." The latter scenario cannot be used to deduct losses from your earned income.Setting up Limited Liability Companies (LLCs)is highly recommended when investing in income producing real estate for the protection of personal assets. And how this is structured is very important. The C and S corporations are are also covered. When, why, and how should you begin the process. Deductions, leasing, licensing, royalties, trusts and many more things are explained also.People often state how great it is to get the the tax deduction on mortgage interest: What do you get on average? For every dollar you pay to the bank in interest on a mortgage, you get 30 cents back with the deduction. I'll take it, but is 30 cents on the dollar a good deal to you?There are several questionaires to fill in, so a person can assess (honestly!) what their true financial situation is. Their risk tolerance, what resources they can tap into, and what timeline can be established. Very important is the team of folks needed for a person or couple to be able go to for advice, support, and information.The most common money people work and toil for is the W-2. I can't believe that I just discovers this book. I loved Fight or Flight and was hoping there would be a sequel. When I saw Sink or Swim I thought it was the rest of Jay and Em's story and was sad to see it was not (though that was a great book also) I don't know how it missed this one since it has been out for a few months, but I am so glad I found it.Fight or Flight is on my favorites list, so I would love anything that had to do with Jay and Em. When they 'rode off into the sunset' in the end of Fight or Flight, it was obvious that life was not going to be easy. Two teenagers, who have lived very trouble lives are going to have struggles and hardships trying to make it on their own.I do have a few complaints about the story that make it 4 stars, rather then 5.**Spoilers**The middle of the story gets pretty repetitive. Too much time is spent in Jay and Em's heads while they think about how terrible they are and how they are not good enough for eachother. It is important to see what is going on in their heads to understand why they are doing what they are doing, but it just too much and too repetitive.It also took Jay too long to have his moment of clarity. What he was trying to do was understandable, but he should have figured out that it was not working much sooner. There were too many times when he would run to Em's rescue, apologizing for not being there for her, and then leave still thinking he was protecting her. It became clear very early on that Em was going to be a target and be in danger, whether she was with Jay or not. He just made it harder to protect her by keeping her away. It did not make sense that he could not figure that out. I could see him not realizing the emotional damage he was doing because of his low self esteem, but I just did not get how he could not figure out that having her living with Ashlyn was just putting both of the girls in more danger, by leaving them on their own to fend off his crazy dad.While the middle of the book dragged on a bit and starting getting repetitive the ending was kind of rushed. We only 'saw' the big climax though Em's point of view and never got to see how Jay was feeling after the ordeal with his father and he and Em finally being intimate. We are told that everything is explained to Mason, but don't get to experience it. I would have liked to experience Mason's thoughts and reactions to learning Jay and Em's story. He had to have had a lot of questions about why Em had so many issues and why such young people had such an intense relationship. It would have been nice to see his reaction to finally understanding everything.There are side characters introduced in the story, but we don't learn anything about them. Em talks about being a bad friend and she is right. Ashlyn goes out of her way to help Em and most of the time she gets brushed off or completely ignored. Ashlyn and Mason are getting their own story, but I have no idea what it will be about, because we don't learn anything of substance about them in this book. All we know about them is that they are both nice, live off their parents and work in a crappy restaurant. We are told that Mason is 19, but never even find out how old Ashlyn is. She lives on her own in a house, or maybe and apartment, with a spare room that her dad pays the rent for. We don't know if she goes to school or anything about her life outside of work and her friendship with Em. We aren't told if Mason has his own place or lives at home. His parents bought his car and he seems to have not shortage of money, so it does not really make sense that he is waiting tables in a nasty restaurant. You would think he could find a much better job.The story ends with room for yet another book. I will be happy if there is more in store for Jay and Em, but I would not want to see more relationship drama for them. They have been though enough and their love and relationship should be solid. I would love to see them working together side by side, to get past their demons and build their future. I would want whatever drama any future books would have to be things they could face together and not things that would tear them apart.If there is not going to be another book for them, I will be disappointed with how this one left off. There could have been less of the back and fourth in the middle of the book and more closure to their story.I am a huge fan of the whole Fight or Flight saga. I am sure I am being nit picky in my review, but that is just because I love the characters so much and have been spending months thinking about them and imagining what their future would be like.

This is the last of the trilogy about Jay and Em's struggle to overcome homelessness and horrible abusive pasts, learn to love and trust and move on. I was so taken by this series. You felt the desperation, stress, struggle all the way to your bones. This book picks up where Jay has purchased a house and truck, and takes Em away from her abusive uncle by emancipating her. They both work at a dumpy diner. They live on raman noodles and have the heat so low you can barely call it heat, all to save a few precious dollars. But then Jay's past comes back to town with a vengeance, and the lengths Jay will go to to keep Em safe the only way he knows how is both endearing and heart wrenching. I had an overwhelming need to take these two to a grocery store and tell them to fill every cart they could! A real heartwarming story.

While I love Em and Jay, I was a little annoyed and slightly bored with this second book. I know in reality, struggles are not few and far, but I felt like I saw this couple go through enough in the first book. I wanted to see a happier, slightly brighter, maybe even more romantic side to their story in this book. Aside from that, I think the author, once again, showed true talent in writing and bringing Jay and Em's story to life. It was realistic and gave a sense of closure. I would be pretty thrilled though if there were a novella of some sorts in the works. =)

This book has nothing on the first one. What an interesting story book one was, book on the other hand dragged on and on and on. I do not recommend book 2. The saddest part was the ending if thyats what you call it.

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.I enjoyed this book, it was gripping and easy to devour but I didn't enjoy it as much as Fight or Flight because I didn't find the situations as intense. I wanted more of Jay's story, I didn't really get where his dad came from and how he found them and I don't really know what he actually wanted, well besides money. I am glad the story ended the way it did because Jay and Em finally got to be happy. But I still want more! I want, no I NEED to know what happens now. Do the villains finally go to jail? And if yes do they stay there. And do Jay and Em get their happy ending forever?I'm still in love withe Jay and Em but it I am sad that they keep blaming themselves for hints that they have no control over. I'm glad that they are getting their lives together and coming into their own. I love that they are able to grow and overcome their issues together and have each other for support. I also really like amazon and Ashlyn and I can't wait to get their stories.This was another awesome book by Jamie Canosa and I can't wait to read more. This story tugged on my heart strings and I want more! I would recommend this novel to those who love a good romantic contemporary.

This is a great series. I love the characters and I'm so happy to have more to read about Jay and Em. I do highly recommend this book. Just keep an open mind that you're going to have to overlook some editing issues. The misuse of were/we're and your/you're is very frustrating. That being said, it still won't deter me from reading the next installment of the series.

As most people know by now, I'm a fan of Jamie Canosa. Two of my all-time favorite books are Dissidence and Our Own Worst Enemies, both by Jamie. She has a real knack for writing characters that stay with you, and Em and Jay are no exceptions. It isn't often that I like a sequel better than the original (though it does happen, and seems to happen a lot with Jamie's books) and in the case of Now or Never Jamie has taken the story she began with Fight or Flight and made it that much more intriguing. They might be off the streets but that doesn't mean life has gotten easy for these two. Jay and Em are sympathetic and admirable, and their love story can make even the Grinch's heart beat faster. I absolutely recommend this or any other book by Jamie Canosa.
