I loved this book and went to many of the sights in it. IT really is fantastic and you can't find this stuff online. Not in the detail it gives.

It lives up to its name. But it must be an old book. Didn't feel current.

I'll start by saying I like this book. I bought it yesterday and did not sleep last night for reading it, even though I had a very important meeting this morning. Boulware's look at San Francisco is entertaining. But it's not exactly fresh. This book tries to take over where Eldritch Weirde's "A Guide to Mysterious San Francisco" left off several years ago, but falls severely short of the mark. Perhaps what annoys me, or irritates me or alienates me about this book is the fact that it is written from an outsider's point of view. Boulware writes many of his articles from an "us vs. them" point of view, the "Us" in question being intelligent, right-minded people and the "Them" being the freaks from San Francisco. The tone is not reverent, but mocking. Boulware belittles us at every turn, whether making fun of the way we dress while dining late-night at Sparky's, or swimming the Bay with the Dolphin Club. Boulware treats San Franciscan's like his own private freak show. It's obvious that he's not from around here. That said, the book is still entertaining and chock full of interesting facts. It will take you to places you wouldn't find in an ordinary guide book and you may or may not be the better for it. For a real treat, a reverent, loving guide to SF strangeness, pick up the aforementioned book by Dr. Weirde. It's out of print, so it will take some hunting, but it's well worth it.

I had a few extra days in San Francisco on a recent trip, so I got this hilarious and irreverent guide to the "unknown" San Francisco. Boulware gives us the insider's tour of weird Chinatown bars, the Coltrane Museum, the scary Musee Mechanique, wife-swapping motels for swingers and much much more. With hours, phone numbers and directions for the very intrepid explorer. A must for even the most jaded Bay Area lifers.

Reading this book has put my life back in the fast lane to simian utopia. I have purchased two copies one for reading and one to keep safely sealed in plastic. Mr. Boulware may very well be the next John Updike. SF Bizarro is both true and touching in it's ginger yet whimsical exploration journey into the very soul of San Fran. I hope to find Mr. Boulware very soon and let him know how much we have in common. SF Bizarro is not just a "guide to freakiness" it is a self help guide to just being you in the topsy-turvy quagmire, nay, rock-n-roll soup that is Frisco. Peace

The Bridgeport County Youth Association was getting concerned about the scarcity of kids actually interested in playing baseball anymore, so much so that just about any kid who wanted to play would have no problem getting chosen for the AAA league. The Association's new coach, Scott Mirkana, who had actually played for the majors, had no issue with drafting those players that no other coach wanted. The others wondered what his strategy was, but he left the meeting with an air of nonchalance. By the fourth practice, Mirkana's team was learning to cope with Assistant Coach Beck's abrasive coaching style and had already nicknamed him Coach Bark. Mirkana had four team members he was particularly interested in: Seth was a gifted and intuitive mathematician who saw the world in terms of numbers and measurements; Alex was probably the fastest young runner he had ever seen; Jared was a pitching wunderkind and Chase was a natural at anything mechanical, a gift he had inherited from his grandfather. The four seemed to have absolutely nothing in common until Mirkana sent them to the Snack Shack with some rather strange directions.Strxia: The Odds Are Against Us introduces kids to elementary aspects of physics and other STEM subjects, but don't tell them that. Instead, let them find out while entranced in an exciting and unpredictable story that melds baseball and interplanetary action and adventure as the four teammates set out upon a crucial and seemingly impossible mission. The authors' plot actually shows that there are real life applications to the esoterics of science and technology, and the way Alex and her fellow teammates use their talents and work together to make things happen is marvelous to see. Along the way, the reader gets a grand introduction to some of the more confusing aspects of physics, and suddenly those fearsome concepts don't seem quite so difficult after all -- at least that was my experience. The plot is a grand one, the characters are credible and finely delineated, and the action makes this book virtually impossible to put down. Strxia: The Odds Are Against Us is most highly recommended.My kid loved this book. To be honest, I didn't tell him much about it. I just told him it told a story about baseball and it's all he cares about since he turned nine. But he's been struggling in school and I wanted to get him at least a little interested in math or science or something like that. I saw this and figured we would at least try it out. So I told him it was a book about kids on a baseball team and he dove right in. He had a hard time in a few of the sections but he's pretty smart and about halfway through, he stopped asking me questions and just read it. Quietest afternoons I've had for a while. Between everything we have going on, he finished the story in about a week. And he loved it! I was nervous for a while with him asking so many questions but that didn't deter him and he's already wanting to read it again. He said he knows people like all the characters, so they made a real impression on him, and now he's quietly doing his math homework and we're going to the library this weekend to get him some books to help him with his numbers. With “Strxia: The Odds Are Against Us”, I didn’t know what to expect. Definitely rings true that you shouldn’t “judge a book by its cover.” Even with the first chapter, I still didn’t know what I was diving into. However, from the beginning, it was clearly well-written. A few parts skip around and some of the formatting is an interesting concept (some liberties are taken but it works), and while it’s not typically my age group, I was curious enough to dive in and enjoy the rest. Those expecting a very basic kid-style sci-fi story are in for a surprise- a very pleasant surprise. It speeds up to keep everyone’s attention and plays around with enough scientific concepts that you definitely get to learn a thing or two while reading. Other reviews were right: it’s STEM-oriented. So, if you are trying to get kids interested in some science, then this might be a good route to go. Though it’s slightly more directed towards boys, I think young girls would enjoy it as well. For adults, you’ll see some cliched characterizations but will enjoy the scientific principles included same as the kids; additionally, it does use more mature verbiage, so some kids might struggle with some of it- but overall, I think it would be a good learning opportunity to read a fun book that helps them learn and grow. Not that it’s overly explanation… but it ties in nicely and shows the basics of numbers, science, baseball, and growing up. Baseball is the main theme in this story, utilized to interpret the science and a backbone for the science fiction (you’ll get it once you read it). While it’s not my type of story typically (I don’t think I’m the ideal audience though, so that’s on me), I was still able to understand and enjoy the story. I get what the writer was aiming for and I think with younger kids who like sports and/or science, this book would definitely be a hit! Charming, well-characterized, and well-written.

Awwwww! This was such a cute story. So. Cute. I mean, I thought it would do weird sections of math or something, you know like some old math books? But then there wasn’t any sections like that. I skimmed through it first, just to be sure. I’m super picky about my stories and I get easily annoyed over forced learning concepts. Things like that just need to come naturally, you know? And while it has a stiff point or two, overall, I really think it worked out. Like all the other sections, it worked out and you could usually tell what was going on. There were fun little characters and the Odds which I still don’t really get but I kind of get, like just enough to get the book. Maybe I’ll read it again just to make sure I’m super clear. But it was still really cute even if you don’t understand every little piece! Once I had to put the book down and leave for a while but then I picked it back up and had to backtrack through the book because it was at a tricky part. I don’t like it when that happens, but I still figured it out and rereading a few pages isn’t too hard. I think it was mostly good and I didn’t have any problems reading it or understanding it or liking it. I mean it was really just super cute. I think everyone and anyone could enjoy it, personally. It’s a cute book.

I really enjoyed the fast paced story about Seth, Alex, Jared and Chase. From the character development to their experiences on Strxia and the exciting conclusion. Looking forward to the next installment.

Ruben Dario was the first great Spanish symbolist poet and perhaps the greatest of all Latin American poets. It's good to see a substantial selection of his poetry in Spanish in accessible form. The English translations, however, are inept almost beyond belief. What the reader with some Spanish needs is a careful and competent trot, as in the wonderful "Penguin Book of Spanish Verse," where the translator gets every nuance.What the reader gets is verse translations in which every consideration of meaning is subordinated to the need for rhyme. Moreover, the translators, in the interest of a spurious readability, make no attempt to suggest the orotund classicizing side of Dario's diction. I have the impression that many such poems, among Dario's best, have been suppressed as too difficult and/or unfashionable. Finally, the translators apparently wouldn't recognize a literary allusion or quotation in the original if it fell on them.The Stavans introduction is just contemptible, as both biography and literary criticism. Stavans' prose style, as always, is just awful. Mr. Stavans, there is no such English word as "illusive"!I've never written an Amazon review before, but then I've rarely approached a book with such high hopes and been so disappointed.

I ordered 2 copies of this book. Delivery was prompt but one of the copies is defective, missing like 10 pages of the introduction. I was of course disappointed.

This book covers the period from the time that the some of the CAA founders worked at William Morris, how CAA was created, how it functioned in it's long heyday, and how it changed when the Young Turks took over after Ovitz left. If you've never seen the inside of the book or read any excerpts, it is not a narrative by the author; instead, it is a compilation of narratives by the founders of CAA, some of the agents, some actors, the Young Turks, and people on the periphery. If you don't know at least who these people are, this book may be very confusing to read. It does provide an interesting insight into the mindset of agents, how they function, what the job entails, and the "it's-good-to-be-King" philosophy of the major power brokers in Hollywood. Yes, they eat their young for breakfast in that town!Since the narratives are provided by the individuals themselves, I found that there was a lot of back-patting, and "he was so nice", "everybody loved him" etc. etc. etc. That was not genuine and clouded some of the book for me. Come on...this is Hollywood. If you're an agent, and a successful one, you would throw your mother off of a cliff or sell your firstborn to get the best client and/or deal. Having most of the people praise Ovitz when, in reality, he was to the right of Ghengis Khan, was feeble. But I suppose that most of the people in the book are still active in Hollywood so you never burn your bridges - especially in Tinseltown where the powers-that-be NEVER forget ANYTHING.Comments on the Kindle edition: BAD, BAD, BAD.....in what world do booksellers think they can just copy/paste a hardcover into a Kindle versionn?? It doesn't work. The formatting was terrible in many places; there were "bookmarks" already in the book - what's that about? and....there are photos but 99% of the photos are on one page and captions are either on the page before the photo or after the photo. So if you want to know who's-who in the photo to have to keep going back a page or forward to next page. Ugh!!! I find this is an issue with other Kindle versions of books and it astounds me that we can land a man on the moon but someone can't spend the time to format a hardcover book into a reader-version.

It's packed full of insider points of view. So it's very interesting in that respect. However, that positive comes at the cost of a rather odd style - the author has assembled quotes from those involved so that if a particular issue is covered one gets the POV of maybe 2-3-4 people involved in the event. And I assume these are pretty much verbatim quotes. Which is good if one is interested in hearing how the subjects talk, idioms, syntax, how they make a point - which is very useful -- but it's not literature, it's not a single voice narrative. So I found it a little emotionally rootless. It's more of a reporting style. There are so many contributors. Though the author would orient the reader to the players and their hierarchy I kept forgetting who had done what and said what which was important in reading the subtext of their commentary. I was familiar with a number of the names so had a vague notion of what was going on at the time, but I really could get lost if I left the book a few days or weeks and tried to come back to it. But all this said, it's a treasure trove of eye openers for anyone who has or aspires to have a big shot agent looking out for their career. It's about how the sausage is made.

If you like the "business" end of show business, this is the book for you. Miller is an excellent writer and Powerhouse is full of great stories, giving you a peek into the entertainment world and -- for me -- many reasons I'm glad not to be a part of it. The creation, evolution, and growth pains of CAA are told through its many voices, the owners, the workers, and the clientele. Miller's style is very different and may be jarring to some readers. I would advise getting used to it, as you are in for a fun ride here. All the complaints here on Amazon relate to his essentially quoting verbatim his interviews with the book's characters. It's really a massive interview, so one needs to settle down into that literary formula. You'll hear about Hollywood's glad-handling and backstabbing. I found myself laughing out loud at parts (an agent guarantees his client makes a flight to Paris by calling in a bomb threat to delay take-off. Stuff like that you can't make up). Buy and enjoy!

I purchased the kindle version of this book, hoping to get a leg up on developing Unity-based games. The book is supposed to have downloadable exercise files associated with it that you use when working through the examples. You are directed to a website to get these files. However ... when to go there the only 'link' (to access anything) is labelled 'Download your FREE Resource Pack!". It requires that you enter an email address and name and then press "Yes, I want to receive my bonus pack!" - whatever that is. Supposedly you will receive an email directing you to the downloads. Instead you get an email inviting you to subscribe to some sort of subscription. There are no signs whatsoever of the download files! Given the absence of these files, it is kinda hard to proceed with the book.

This book has no Table of Contents as a part of the actual book. This book and the companion website have no questions for the Quizes, only the answers, so they are useless. The companion website starts sending me spam messages after signing up. The images are too small to find out what is inside them. You should always explain everything using words in case the image doesn't make it obvious what you are supposed to do. Author's Notes boxes contain crucial information, not just comments as promised at the beginning of the book, so you need to read them instead of skipping them. Peculiar acronyms like MRB (Mouse Right Button) do not help the beginners with learning. All the images are for the OS X version of Unity, but beginners get confused when there are no images for the Windows version also. Downloading a huge complex project like the Viking Village is not the best way of teaching beginners with Unity as it takes multiple difficult procedures and a long time to import and download it. The author confuses Tabs with Views. Otherwise, this book does teach what it promises, so it's not totally bad.

First off I just want to say I never touched Unity 5 at all and I read through the entire book in about 12 hours even doing the bonus labs. It has given me great confidence and I know enough now to make a basic layout for a game.If you have never touched Unity, I highly recommend this book, if you have used Unity 4 or 5 at any version you are probably too advanced for this version of his book, go get the "beginners" or "intermediate" versions of Patricks books.Yes its a lot of money for the book $45.00 print edition (at the time of writing this review) that doesn't go very in-depth but the title didn't lie it says "Foundations" and he offers ebooks if you want to go that route for way cheaper.Now with that said I am a programmer with experience in various programming languages and I really appreciate the way Patrick guides you through on the usage of Unity 5 and walks you through hand in hand in the creation of basic layout of a game. His instructions were clear and with lots of screenshots! Some errors in the verbiage but you get the point and it won't stop you.Fantastic book overall for new people to Unity I plan to buy all in Patrick's series and I hope he comes out with more advanced versions.

As a new user to Unity, the book does a good job getting new users accustomed to the interface, and provides some great examples on creating basic designs. There are some typos here and there which is expected, as well as a few inconsistencies in what you are supposed to see on the screen as opposed to what shows in the book. This is probably due to version changes of Unity itself though (I was using 5.6.2f1), and the author should state the actual version being used in the book. You can usually find the actual option after mucking through the interface though.Note that there is no actual coding done in this book, with the exception of applying pre-written scripts to some objects. This is to teach you the interface, and you CAN create simple games just with dragging and dropping.As for the Kindle version of the book, there are issues with the images being too small to view. The author does a good job explaining what's in the image, but with differences in the version I have as opposed to what the author used, being able to view the image would have helped (like ambient lighting).

Full of errors, the book contradicts itself too many times, one page say something next one says the opposite, for example position 713 states that Unity uses a left handed coordinate system then in position 1016 says right handed; very basic thing like instruct you to do a zoom in when the intention is to do a zoom out, and is full of this kind of elemental error; very bad bad review of the author/editor before publishing to catch this kind of mistakes; on the other hand, is toooo basic and short in scope, you probably be better with some introduction free tutorial over internet.

Very well written book. I bought the kindle version and it was easily worth the price. I have been doing web development for many years using c# and have always wanted to get into video games. I have done some of the tutorial videos on Unity's website and they helped some but I was not making much progress. I decided to buy this book because I was interested in the content. Turns out it was a great buy. It walks you through all of the basics and gave me a much better and solid foundation of how to use Unity. It reads well and the pace moves quickly. Chapter 4 walks you through how to design a game map like Wolfenstein 3D (that's what it reminded me of). Chapter 5 has you build an island (like a way dumbed down version of Just Cause 3 but still pretty cool.) And so far I have not had to write any code. I was unaware that Unity had so much built in. If you are wanting to get started learning Unity this book is great.

I am fascinated with the Amish and wanted to understand more about their culture. This book is written to answer all the questions you may have about the Amish. From different wagons used to different colors worn. No technology is used and they go to school to the 8th grade then begin working with their families. I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot more about them. I highly recommend it if you are interested in their way of life.

This book answered all of any possible questions I had. A couple of weeks ago we drove through Lancaster as we have done many times before. This time I found myself thinking about specific questions I had as I looked out the window of our car. I marveled at the horse drawn buggies and the bearded men inside dressed in their Sunday finery. I told my stepson right there and then that I was going to do some research so that I could answer not only my questions, but his as well. If you have an inquiring mind as I do, this is the book that will answer those questions!

This was a very honest and helpful book that answered a lot of questions I had about the Amish. Of course there is much information on the internet about the Amish people, but this answered a lot of FAQ's that are not usually found on websites about the Amish.
