My nine-year old son insisted that we purchase the book after the author visited his school. He was captivated by the author's stories and presentation. I was worried whether the book, which is very factual and probably written more for grades 6-8, would hold a fourth grader's attention. It did! Kudos to the author.

I bought this book for my 92 year old father. He was in the Navy during WWII and his favorite pastime is reading. He thoroughly enjoyed the book and passed it on to my brother-in-law and now to my husband who was also in the Navy.

My grandson was excited to get the book. He loves anything to do with WWII

I wish there was a 4 1/2 star option, but I just can't bring myself to give it 5. This is definitely one of the best books I've read on upcycling furniture. I've been painting furniture for just under a year, and have done tons of pieces in that time. I've read several books and blogs and tried a variety of techniques. But this book offered me some great tips I hadn't read or heard of elsewhere. I think it would be good for a beginner, but maybe better for someone like me who has some experience under her belt.So why would I dock it half a star? Because she uses hand-drawn illustrations instead of photographs on many of the tutorial pages. I thought these illustrations were kind of cheesy and not very helpful. Photos of the actual process taking place on the actual piece would have been MUCH better. And also because she refers to latex paint and primer throughout the book. I use chalk paint, and there were only a couple references to chalk paint. Do that many people really sand, prime, and use latex paint on furniture with all the great chalk paint options out there? She talks about milk paint as well, which I also use, and had some good info on that. But I was surprised by the downplay on chalk paint.Anyway, a great book overall, I'd definitely recommend it, and I'll probably read it again soo to really soak in the knowledge.

This book is so believable and has a lot of detail about the afterlife. Be sure to read this book first, then follow up by reading "Destiny of Souls" by the same author. I have read this book 3 times so far, and each time it changes me. It reminds me of why I'm here in this life, and there is a purpose for it, and that there is a reason for the pain and suffering. Reading this book is better than going to a shrink (for me.) Actually though, it makes me want to be regressed to learn what my blueprint for life is so that I can know for sure that I'm on the right track. "Journey of Souls", and especially "Destiny of Souls" have a lot of similarities to Robert Monroe's "Far Journeys" 3 book series. I also highly recommend Monroe's books if you are interested in the spirit world.This book is not like those other "Life after Death" books, where a person goes through a tunnel, speaks to a guide or God or whomever and then has to come back. There is so much more detail here. It will trigger memories for most people about how it feels to be "home" again. Very comforting.

One year ago today I lost my son. He was a vibrant, healthy, happy & successful 25 year old who was living his dream... He went to sleep around midnight on February 19th and sometime overnight had a sudden arrhythmia, (an "off" heartbeat), and died. I didn't have the chance to say goodbye, tell him that I loved and appreciated him beyond measure, and we still don't know why the arrhythmia occurred. Poof, he just disappeared from our world. Where did he go? How and why could this happen?I've not been a spiritual person, or believed in God for that matter, yet I must admit that there's got to be more to life than we could possibly conceive of. I so badly want to know that he's still with me now in some way, that I'll see him again, so I'm trying to educate & convince myself...In my desperate attempts to FIND a true belief in Spirit I've purchased many books. I've read the first 1/2 of most of them, then I tire. Then I came across this beautiful book, this gift, that has truly given me hope, made sense of things that I'd not been open to before. I'm a left-brain, scientific, fact-based thinker and the people who claim to know, really know about a God or an existence beyond, well, they've not been people that I could relate to... Now I'm truly getting there thanks to Journey of Souls.Would it sound too crazy if I called it one of the most meaningful, hopeful, beautiful book I've ever read? My paperback copy is on my nightstand for constant go-to when I have a crashing wave of pain, I have it on Audible to lull me to sleep when I can't otherwise, and I've purchased 12 other copies for friends and family.I LOVE this book and am so thankful for its gifts to me.

I have a very analytical mind and always have a tendency to ask questions in any kind of situation(s). Growing up, I have been exposed to different religions and I have come to the conclusion that at the very foundation, all religions are the same - try to be a good person and not harm others. Problems starts with religion when we introduce intermediaries - like priests - and become even more complex and politics is in the mix. I consider religion a way of controlling society because many of us will not question an instruction from a higher authority who says - "you will not enter heaven, if you perform such an action".This book has impacted my life in the most profound manner. I cannot even comprehend how much it is. Even if the contents are not true, it does not matter. I know that after reading this book, I have been able to change the way I live my life, the way I have empathy for others, my true purpose in life and lastly but not the least - having peace and not afraid of death, whether it is my own or my immediate family.The only thing you have to keep in mind is - be open to what the book is talking about. And ask your heart rather than your mind (there is a big difference) what you feel. You will be pleasantly surprised.I highly recommend this book for personal growth and development.

This book is giving me great comfort. I've had this book on my shelves for a while and am currently reading it. I also have his second book Destiny of Souls, which I will read once finished. As I age I feel a great need to know about the Other Side. I need to know for sure if we do indeed continue on. As we continue to lose family and friends, such knowledge can give us great comfort. Plus the fact with recent health issues that continue I don't want to live in fear of dying. In fact from many books on the subject of the After Life, near death experiences, etc. I am thankful to those who took the time to share their knowledge as well as their research. After the death of my husband in 2002 since then I've searched for answers as well as reassurance that his soul continues and one day along with my parents who passed on in 2003 we will all be reunited. I grew up just 5 miles from the former location of NAS Squantum and rode my bike on the old runway as a kid. But I never knew this base had a history that went back to very earliest days of aviation. I also had no idea that the base was the location of a ship yard that built US Navy destoyers. Those are a few of the gems that can be found in this easily read picture book.Images from NAS Squantum's history are presented, from the aforementioned "gems", through WW2 and the eventual migration to NAS So. Weymouth. This book covers the history of this airfield from the late 1940's until decomissioning in the mid 90's: from the farmland that was eventually converted to patrol base with blimps and finally an airbase with fixed wing and rotor winged aircraft. The size of the blimp hangars, as shown on the cover, is almost beyond belief. Images of the giant hangar's contruction and destruction are detailed. Airshow fans that visited the base during one of the many open houses will recognize many of the scenes and may even see themselves!A must for any New England or US Navy history buff looking for a peek into a bygone era.

The Amish don't tell their girls anything about sex or life in general, they learn it when they need to know it. Young Amish women are pitifully unprepared for life. So many people are fascinated with the Amish. There's a whole fiction genre based around their lifestyle. I think many people view them as Little House on the Prairie...but this memoir reveals a very different story. Strict rules, hard-handed discipline, lack of communication--this is Emma's experience. Her retelling of her first menstrual cycle and horrifying dating experiences show that she was not adequately prepared for these things, even within their community. I like how Emma had faith in God, even though He was never spoken of in her church or family. She shares that she received Jesus as her Savior in a Baptist Church after leaving. I like how there is no rebellion or bitterness.

In her closing Q&A to this memoir Ms. Gingerich comments on the puzzling fascination of many Americans ("the English") for the lifestyle of Amish communities, and I must confess she hoisted me on that petard rather nicely. It is easy for a man to fantasize about "the simple life", to dream of conducting one's daily affairs without all the aggravations of automobiles and electronics, but when one takes up this slim volume and begins reading the author's descriptions of her Amish life the blinders that have kept reality at bay are forcefully removed. I noted as I read that from a male perspective it might still be something of an ideal world; but when I found myself picturing my daughter (whom I raised on my own for most of her young life) being forced into that life of servitude and crushing obeisance that happy little fantasy quickly turned into a nightmarish quagmire. And it's not just horse farts and dawn-to-dusk drudgery that force one to throw off a lifetime of tunnel-vision. I applaud Ms. Gingerich for the clear and convincing way she has opened my eyes and I highly recommend this book to anyone who might still be thinking as I once did that the Amish are to be admired.

Beyond basically interesting, i'd call this a "page-turner" to read through and I found myself regretting when I'd turned the LAST page and it was over. Living in an area where many Pennsylvania Amish live, I have certainly learned that all are different and one would not find the same lifestyle and personal conduct behind all closed family doors that Emma experienced. After seeing her interview on Megan Kelly's Show, I immediately ordered her book to learn more about her personal story. I can't imagine anyone reading this and not be hoping she makes a successful "Escape" ! It's an informative story, yes, but one that will draw you deep into a world that you will be thankful Emma managed to leave! Well done, Emma!

I have read many fiction and non fiction books on the Amish through the years. I know their lives are not the romanticized ones we read in various fiction books and this book brings that home. The author, Emma, never felt comfortable in her Amish community. She especially longed for more education and in the Amish community children only go to school through 8th grade.What was interesting about this book is it showed what she had to do to leave her home & the difficulty she had. In particular she was very kind hearted and didn't realize how evil the world can be. The other thing is she actually talks about bedside courtship, which is something some Amish communities believe in. It was interesting to read a true account of how this works and to see how lax the rules are for courtship.Overall a very interesting book. There are some very gritty parts so I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone under the age of 16 without a parent reading it first.

I became aware of this book and was drawn to read it after seeing a YouTube recording of Emma when she appeared on Good Morning America. I've read many fictional Amish romance novels and was familiar with many aspects of Amish life but I'd never heard of any Amish communities as strict as the one in which Emma was raised.I enjoyed reading about her young life and applaud her for doing what she felt was right for her. This is not the type of autobiography I had expected to give 5 stars. But Gingerich and her editor write clearly about her life and the author is such a hero that it's impossible not to like her and to root for her. She is unflinchingly honest about herself and about the simple pleasures and satisfactions she wanted in life, and how the Amish world was simply never going to allow her to be happy.And though Gingerich is no longer Amish, she is still very much a young woman with deep religious and social values who is generous with her money and dedicated to improving herself through education and hard work.Her self-discipline and courage are straight out of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" and Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House", which are, comedian to think of it, pretty timeless.Gingerich shows that it's possible to break out and build your own future without spitting on one's past.

I've read a lot of Amish memoirs, but this is definitely my favorite. It's emotionally suspenseful, and in some ways I can identify with the author - I'm not Plain, but I was raised with by overbearing parents who didn't let me be myself. Emma's book is a true story of overcoming great odds through sheer determination. It's about a free-thinking girl who breaks the bonds she's been forced into. It's an inspirational story that any Christian can enjoy.
