King Dork was simply "not my cup of tea." Author Frank Portman's writing is good, his character development is quite inventive, and his book is quirky and to some, it would be very unusually charming. I, on the other hand, found the protagonist totally irritating. I can see teens reading this and absolutely loving it, though. But I guess I'm just too old. In the liner notes, King Dork is called a punk rock novel. I don't know what that is. I do know that I read almost the entire novel before I figured out just when the story takes place. Maybe that's part of the punk rock angle, for the protagonist is fascinated with such an array of retro-rock music that I could not pin down just when he was living his life. His father was in high school in 1963. The protagonist was fourteen or fifteen at the telling of this story. The father had been dead for several years, but when I added the ages up, that put the kid in the 1980s, but then later his father's death was pinned to 1993. Add to my confusion the fact that the major novel being taught in the boy's school was The Catcher in the Rye. As an English teacher myself, I can state that I haven't heard of The Catcher in the Rye being taught in high school in years. So, drowned in confusion and not liking the main character, I admit I sped through the book, often skipping some of it. That being said, I should not even be reviewing it, but perhaps my "take" on this is different enough from others that it will be food for thought.

Alright Alright I do get all the strong feminist reactions to this book but really...who cares? Literature and art doesn't have to be POLITICALLY CORRECT. This is the story of a young adult who's having major issues connecting with the whole world and if y'all haven't noticed he depicts everybody around him negatively...not just the female characters. Its witty and well written thats all that matters!Are you really gonna forbid your children to read something cause it doesn't align with your own beliefs of what is ''right'' and ''wrong''? Take a few moments to ponder about it

This book didn't grab me initially as I found the narrator a bit too misanthropic and condescending at first. I am glad I stuck with it because I did come to understand his worldview more as he gave more about his background. The writing style is full of pop culture references which I generally welcome but at times they seemed to have the unintended effect of stalling what may be a very compelling mystery. I believe the next book in the series will be better if it delves deeper into the mystery and doesn't get sidetracked by style over substance. I do see great potential in the author and I hope he fulfills it in his future novels.

LOL! Which is about all I did while reading Frank Portman's KING DORK. Besides wanting to initiate Reader's Theatre and read passages aloud to my friends, family, or basically anyone within earshot. This clever parody of J.D. Salinger's CATCHER IN THE RYE is packed with enough sarcastic humor to make Mad Magazine look like Highlights for Children.Holden Caulfield, step aside for the new king in town: Tom Henderson, great American nobody, Chi-mo, Sheepie, and King Dork. His Hillmont High School life is a combination of unsuccesses--from his exploits with girls, to his wannabe band that doesn't even have a drummer and amps...or guitars, to his father killed in a hit and run (or is that just what they told everyone?), to his ground-proximity position on the social totum pole.But when his alphabetical-order friend, Sam Hellerman, drags him to this party where he meets the mysterious fake-mod Fiona (who disappears and leaves him wanting), his life spirals into a humorously-obsessed scavenger hunt for the first girl he's ever made out with. The spiral gets bigger when he finds an old copy of C.I.T.R. in a load of his Dad's old books and discovers a secret code within the pages. The Catcher Code, or something.Tom's desire to know more about his Dad, and making out with Fiona for that matter, leads him into experiences he never thought he'd have. Dead bodies, devil heads, shrinks, bloody noses, monks, a little red book, laundry receipts, the Bible, police investigations, an accidental fight, and tranquilizers. Cause without that kind of stuff, life stays sort of typical, you know?For a book that's as random as it is strategic, fresh as it is a copy, ordinary as it is hilarious, and smallscale as it is worldchanging, it won't be dethroning CATCHER IN THE RYE anytime soon. It's just a half step away from that special something a novel can do to my insides. I don't even know I can put my finger on it, besides to say that I didn't have to think. But I laughed out loud till I started to wonder if people thought I was faking it. And Tom's forever enshrined in my brain right there next to Holden. I feel weird sometimes that I read so much "Young Adult" literature at my not-so-young age! But they are often so funny and smart and poignant, that it's hard not to get pulled in. This book is no exception. I loved these super smart, quirky kids, and loved riding along on their journey to self-discovery. I had many laugh-out-loud moments, at least a few thought-provoking moments, and never ever a dull moment. That's enough to give it a hearty endorsement!

I am in my 30s and could be categorized as a literary nerd in that I adore the classics and slog through the Russians by my own volition. On occasion, I desire a dessert read. This book is candy--a truly delicious read. I laughed out loud many times, including in public places like on an airplane (yes, people did furrow their brows at me, and it was totally worth it). The events the main character experiences will remind you of all the embarrassing moments from high school with the ability to laugh, sigh, cry a little, and reflect as you relive them. Perfect vacation book. I will likely read it again. Ugh, it's hard to leave this review, because I don't feel I did this book justice. It's amazing.

I love history, especially the history of British monarchy. This book provides insights and details that are obviously the product of exhaustive research. I enjoyed it immensely!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book about the domestic side of the royals, beginning with the medieval kings and queens, and all the way through the present. I'm keeping it to read again, because I know I will always find something that I missed.

I've enjoyed reading this a lot. New anecdotes and insights. On occasion the author seems driven to detail the tiniest facts about something, things not particularly relevant. But when TMI (too much information) arrives, I just flip past it, knowing that there remains a lot of fun, good stuff ahead.

Very entertaining. It gives insight into a world most of us don't know about and never will.

One of the best books on English Monarchs I've ever read. I will read this book again. Anyone interested in monarchies will.love it! Kudos Mr. Tinniswood!. Fabulous book!

Generally, I enjoyed this very much and it provided insights into the daily life of English monarchs from the point of view of their support system of staff and courtiers. I got lost in all the peculiar titles for positions serving the monarchs.

I have EVERY World Almanac and Book of Facts since 1961. From time to time I refer to one of the older ones.There isn't much I can say about this book other than the fact that, at least to me, it is an indispensable reference, one which I would not want to be without.Yes you can find a lot of information on line but the tables and information contained in this book, along with the speed with which you can find whatever information you wish, make this book far better and easier to use than looking up the same information on the web.At least, that is my opinion.I always pre-order the book from Amazon soon after it is listed here. Invariably, during the pre-order period, the price goes down (perhaps even just for one day) but Amazon's pre-order guarantee ensures that I will always pay the lowest price offered.Even in a day in which reference books appear to be growing obsolete, I HIGHLY recommend this book to all persons.I thank you for reading this and for considering my opinions.Lawrence H. Lots of information but the print is so itty bitty that even with my good eyes I have to use a magnifying glass to read it.

My roommate devours these fact-filled type books and had been asking for the newest World Almanac. Just received it today and he was stoked. He immediately started to read it. Not sure if I will ever see it again. For those that enjoy the World Almanac series, the newest 2019 is now out and available.

Always well researched, but the print is ridiculously small! The CIA Fact Book is a comparable book.Countries' GDP should always include PPP numbers, the real number.

Hard to figure how they update and add info every year and the book is still about the same size. My friend who loves to read facts-as-relaxation enjoys the occasional NEW Almanac I get him for Christmas.

This book has a lot of information on many subjects. I don’t watch a lot of news these days so I’m catching up on a lot of facts. The print could be a bit bigger, but I’m 71 and wear glasses and I don’t have trouble reading it. Maybe my experience reading my stash of old paperbacks has honed my ability to read small print.

My husband has had one of these every year dating back to the 1960s. This is more than a collection of data- it's information laid out in a way that will keep you flipping through for more. Every time I pick this up I find something new. Keep this one beside your chair and you'll be surprised how often you dip in.

My 13-year-old son has every version of this going back to 2015, and then asked me to buy the latest one so it must be good.

As someone who majored in finance and is very passionate about it, I learned nothing from this book. However, I didn't purchase it to learn, but to educate. I love teaching others about finance, and this is the perfect display book to leave on a coffee table.The rich, bold graphics are both visually appealing and quickly digestible. When people have questions about a topic in my field, I can show them in two quick pages much of the gist of what they need to know (versus an hour of me rambling!).I was delighted to see the book didn't shy away from some of the 'meatier' topics like the Time Value of Money (via the formula for compound interest) or the Capital Asset Pricing Model (via the efficient frontier). Every course I took during my undergraduate degree was essentially summed up in every two page section.If you majored in finance, you won't learn anything here, but this book isn't for you! If you majored in anything else, pick up this book. As someone who dedicates his professional career to this subject, I assure you it is full of all the topics you'll need to know about my field.Two small areas for improvement are the Time Value of Money and the physical cover of the book. While the formula for computing the future value (FV) of a sum is given in relation to debt, I felt this didn't go deep enough on the topic. I would have enjoyed seeing this crucial topic of present and future values given its own two page vignette, showing the flip side of how compound interest can work in an investor's favor.The second area of improvement is the physical front cover of the book. The silver outline around the piggy bank and coins scratches off like it was a lottery ticket. This leaves the cover looking easily disheveled. I recommend keeping the book open to a topic you like if you are going to display it (mine is open to the start of the Personal Finance section, personally).

Not just for kids! Really like the detailed images and information. Well illustrated and colorful. Very similar layout to the "How Food works" book. Recommended reading.

Bought as a gift for my fifteen year old who is interested in math and finance and learning more about money. High interest pieces with pleasing graphics on a variety of topics.

Great reference book for working with people that have limited understanding of basic finances.

Despite knowing much of what is in the book, it was fantastic to 'review' all the knowledge as well to experience how well the infographics show the gist of so many topics.

This book is very specifically about functional programming with Python. It is not very long and it stays on topic. For me this is exactly what I was looking for and I found it very helpful. I also appreciate that the author kept it concise, I was able to digest it in an afternoon easily.This book is good for intermediate Python programmers but I would be wary of recommending it to novices since it does not do much to set a foundation.

This book provides good coverage of functional programming under Python. Also covers gotchas associated with list comprensions. Well worth the money.
