Full disclosure.....I have met the author but that is entirely beside the point because this book shines on its own merits. Abdi writes beautifully as he tells the brutal tale of his childhood in war ravaged Somalia Even when he moved on to Kenya it was still a perilous time for him. He wanted so badly to become American which was a land he knew from watching movies.Through chance and a good bit of luck he found support through the BBC and NPR before he won his golden ticket to get a visa to move to the country of his dreams.Once in the US he had to make many adjustments as he learned to live in Maine.This whole life experience would have broken many but instead it made Abdi stronger and instead of hardening his heart the adversity made his heart bigger.Please read this book....you will not regret it.

Once upon a time I was an avid reader of non-fiction. Now, as a 70 something senior, I gravitate toward lighter escapism fiction. I heard about this book on NPR and decided to check it out on Amazon. It was all the positive reviews without a single 3 stars or lower that prompted me to download it to my Kindle. Am I glad I did. The writing flowed, the story captivated. I could not bring myself to put it down. If like me you rarely or never read memoirs or non-fiction, I urge you to make an exception and read Call Me American. It is a heart wrenching story of what it is like to live in a war-torn country. It is also a story of hope and perseverance that will lift your spirits. I hope Mr. Iftin has another amazing book in the works.

I first heard of Abdi on NPR. I sat in my grocery's store's parking lot for 50 min. to hear the whole interview by a British reporter as he talked every few days with Abdi while he was still in Kenya and trying to get his green card. It was scary, astonishing and life-affirming. Abdi is now in the US and I hope to hear him at a book signing in Tempe or Phoenix, AZ. He writes so well. Do NOT MISS this book.

This is an incredible, true story of a young boy, born in Mogadishu, Somalia just as his country is being torn apart by civil war. He miraculously survives the constant barrage of warfare surrounding him, suffering devastating losses, and witnessing horror after horror. Somehow, this child, recognizing the futility of the tribal warfare, grasps onto the few elements of American culture that he can find, teaches himself English, and imagines a future for himself in America. You have to read the book, but you will understand, it is nothing short of incredible that he actually makes it. I learned so much from his story. It's clear to me now that we need to become a more welcoming country for these incredible people from desperate war torn areas. More people need to read this book.

I finished it on Saturday. Beautifully written. (With no ghost writer, people! He really did teach himself English AND can write and speak better than most of us.) I could hardly breathe the whole time and when I finished I didn't know what to do... I cried a little for all the terror and devastation. And then, everywhere I have gone since then, I see things more than a little differently. Your book is incredible Abdi Iftin. Your survival is mind-blowing, and we are all blessed by your ability to tell the story. I don't know how you remembered all of those days. Each moment of life seemed like another threading of the needle, under extreme conditions.

I have read a lot of memoirs and novels, but have never read anything like this book before. It has opened my eyes to what those seeking asylum in America endure. I thought I knew, just anecdotally from news stories, but I didn't know. I still can't truly know, because to know is to experience. But Abdi Iftin has invited us into his life with a stunning memoir, and he's done it through beautiful and thoughtful writing. This book also gave me a perspective on America that I have never considered, and I hope it will allow me not to take for granted our freedoms and the peace in which we are so fortunate to live, and so many died to ensure for us. To this brave young man: thank you for writing this book. I wish you much peace and hope your family is safe and healthy. To anyone considering reading this book: I can't recommend it enough.

I couldn't put down this memoir once I'd picked it up. Like others, I bought this book after hearing the author's story on NPR. I needed to hear what happened after he made it to America: what was life like? Where did he go, what did he do? These questions were answered, but just as compelling was everything that preceded the NPR story: his parents' lives in the bush herding animals, his early years in Mogadishu, and his family's survival through decades of war.Before I opened the cover I knew little of Somalia, and it is now a country that has texture and taste in my mind. For most of the book I felt a sense of anger and mourning due to the senseless violence, the US's role in destabilizing the country, and the utter destruction of a vibrant culture and people. But the author helped paint a picture--his picture--of a nation that could rise again, and of a rich future for his homeland. The book leaves the reader with this hope, in spite of an epilogue filled with foreboding following the 2016 election and growing anti-immigrant rhetoric: a fear that he never thought he'd find in the US.I am grateful for this story for many reasons: to know and appreciate a beautiful culture I didn't know existed; for the reminder of why it's important to resist extremism and hateful rhetoric; and as a reminder to practice empathy towards others. This book has also left me with a heavy question: knowing these lessons, what will I do with it? To that, I do not yet have an answer.

What an excellent resource! I bought this to plan my first trip into the Boundary Waters. It was a great source of information on travel within the Bwca, and gave many suggested detailed routes. It also listed other helpful resources such as how to find an outfitter to rest a canoe from ( and other supplies as needed), and what maps are NEEDED. My adult daughter and I had a great first trip and will be planning another one for next year.

While a long time vet of paddling and trip planning I am new to the BWCA and this book was the first one that layed things out in such a way as to really get a feel for what trips were like. I had rented every book my library had on the subject with any trip descriptions and/or maps (5-6 total) and this was by far the one that felt most useful to me (including the 2 book series split into east and west regions). The descriptions and relative portage difficulty rankings are well written and informative. The maps are more an overview than detailed (using these as your only mapping seems like a pretty bad idea...) but are fine as an overview. Plus they are presented better than the others Id seen in different books. The issue with the routes not being marked at all is a bit of a hassle but i think it is better than covering the maps with "squiggles" since multiple routes are normally described off of each section of map. Overall a highly recommended item that I expect to use as a planning starter over and over.

When i first opened the book I was a bit disappointed cause it didn't have colorful pictures. But as i flipped through it i realized the wealth of information it contained. Its a great book to pair with the Boundary Waters Canoe Camping book (it has pretty pictures and more info on other things you need to know about the boundary waters besides just the portages). This book has all the portage information which is a HUGE help when trying to plan out a trip. This is our first time going to the boundary waters and having a book like this is super helpful in determining routes that we think we can handle. Its easy to navigate through as well because of the index. If you are reading about a portage on the internet or in another book and you want to know what its like all you had to do is find it in the index and you will then know all you need to know about that portage. Its a great reference book and a must have for planning a boundary waters trip.

We're planning a Boy Scout trip to the BWCAW for 2011 and really didn't know much about the area, the routes we wanted to take, fishing, etc. This book covers everything. While it does not cover every possible route a paddler could take it goes into great depth for the more popular ones. It was nice to be able to read about what you might expect in the way of scenery, especially after the Blowdown of 1999 and many of the subsequent fires. It's obvious that the author went to great lengths to try and put the reader right into the area as they read about a location. The one drawback that I did find was that, unless you were actually holding a map of the BWCAW right in front of you while reading, it was hard to figure out where the routes and portages were. It would have been very helpful to have a picture/map associated with each of the routes described so the reader could follow along. Otherwise, this was an exceptional resource.

The detail given in this book regarding entry points,portages,levels of difficulty,and especially the route descriptions are dead on. I have entered the BWCAW at several different points and as I read the route descriptions for these areas it was very easy to visualize my trips all over again. The history of the lakes and general area of each route is also very interesting,especially as you realize the route you are paddling on was used by the first Native Americans,thousands of years ago in dugout canoes made of pine,or by the Voyageurs,the first Europeans of the region. Great reading whether you're planning a trip,using it for reference on a trip or just dreaming !

Well researched, a little older, but information on planning routes is invaluable. Using the NatGeo maps, and websites like BWCA.com, I'm able to really glean a lot of information while planning this summer's adventure into the BWCAW.

This is a very informative map . I can't wait to use it on my upcoming trip to Boundary Waters.

Like many who purchase this book, I'm not new to shore vacationing but have been spending short summer trips there since I was a little girl. Now grown and married, we've been toying with the idea of packing up and moving there. I share this to let you know what I was looking for in a guidebook. I wanted a feel for what it might be like to live there, head to the other towns, see what cultural events are availible in the off-season, etc. In essence, to go beyond the boardwalk but yet still get a feel for the best of what there is to see and do at the shore. I've purchased SEVERAL books on the topic but this book is by far the best and the one I continually refer back to. It might not have the pretty, coffee table feel that other books on the shore possess, (though it does have SEVERAL, fun black/white photos). What it lacks in esthetics, it more than makes up for in information. To start, the author fills you in on little fascinating details and sidebars that relate to the location's culture, history or both. The room/dining descriptions have a friendly feel, as if a local herself were describing the establishments to you in person, detailing thier pros, cons, and points of interest. Definitally not the feel of traditional stuffy guidebooks I have read in the past. This is a book I look forward to reading. It's a little bit culture, a whole lot of "what-to-do", a dash of history, and a healty dose of love for the shore. Thank you for this wonderful, insightful book! Give us more!

This is a good introduction for those new to the New Jersey shore from Atlantic City south to Cape May. As a frequent vacationer there, I even learned a thing or two. It is not comprehensive, but is well written and useful.

A little out of date, but still the best in print for the South Jersey shore.

When you go to a place for years you get stuck in a rut. This is especially true when your family vactioned there for years prior to you vacationing! This was the case for us. We travel to Cape May, NJ every year and every year we do the same things, eat at the same restaurants etc. After getting this book and realizing we had not taken part in ANY of the options Jen gave us, we set out on finding all that Cape May has to offer. Her guidance is awesome, and very accurate. The restaurants we ate at are just as good as she says they are!I would highly recommend reading about all the "exits" you may find a hidden gem somewhere else that you never would have known about!Jen is a highly skilled writer and I am so happy that I found her book.

Jen's book is wonderfully helpful. As someone who grew up with Lake Michigan beaches as her guide, I had absolutely no idea what was going on "down the shore" when I moved to the Philadelphia 'burbs. This is a great resource which gave me wonderful tips on different towns. Lots of great ideas for things to see and do. What I also like about it is there is a ton of respect for all the Shore towns, not just for a select few. If I had one complaint, it would be she reveals the secret of Strathmere. Shh! :) Otherwise, great book.

I brought Jen Miller's guide to Wildwood last week for our annual family trip with my in-laws. Everybody, including the kids, found something new and interesting in it, even though we've been vacationing in Wildwood Crest for years now. Even if you think you know all there is to see and do down the shore, pick this gem up and take it to the beach with you.

At first glance, the book seems like a winner: great writing, beautiful layout on a heavyweight paper, and nice graphics. But I found i wanted more of an encyclopedia than a personal guide. In her effort to provide strong editorial control, the author has left out information about the range of things that are available. I am sure I will have a great time using her advice, and maybe I will find that it is all that I need. But I prefer more choice in a travel guide, and more basic information. For example, tips on how to go to the beach if you are not staying in a hotel that is walking distance to the beach. I've been going to the beach my entire life and I still am figuring this out. Reading a discussion from this local expert would help me approach my visit with more confidence. Maybe she is so familiar with the terrain that she does not see it from the visitor's perspective.

Our target location for this short vacation was Cape May, Atlantic City was a good base to explore from to many good meals in the area.

Dana C. McWay is a lawyer and veteran health information management professional. A member the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Board of Directors, she served on several AHIMA committees, most recently the Professional Ethics Committee. She was also a member of the Missouri Health Information Management Association's Legislative Committee, and a voting member of the Institutional Review Board at Washington University Medical School. Previously a Director of Medical Records for a large teaching hospital and for-profit substance abuse facility, Ms. McWay led the charge to convert an outmoded, paper-based record management system to a modern electronic system. In addition to LEGAL AND ETHICAL ASPECTS OF HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT for which she received a Triumph Award from AHIMA, she has led several audio conferences, served as co-editor of online continuing education offerings, and written a second HIM text, TODAY'S HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: AN INTEGRATED APPROACH. Licensed to practice law in Illinois and Missouri, Ms. McWay is currently the Clerk of Court for the US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri and one of three recipients of the Director's Award for Outstanding Leadership within the Federal Judiciary.

Seriously? It was either my instructor or this book, or both. The exams that the college has with this book doesn't make sense. The book, alone is so boring and reads so slow that you have to grit your teeth to get through it. There aren't enough tables, illustrations, key word use or definitions within the chapter. There are too many pages of only paragraphs upon paragraphs, no bold key words. I actually can't get through 3 or 4 pages without putting it down from boredom. The tests going along with the book are all over the place. You're assigned a group of chapters, and the test is on not only these chapters, but suddenly on a few following chapters. The information is difficult to retain. I think college RHIT needs a different textbook. I complained about this one to my instructor. The book has a lot of see this chapter. I think test questions come from that. If your class uses this book, be sure to go over and the next unassigned chapter. The book, though is in great shape for a rental.

When my brother was struggling with his faith, a coworker gave him this simple allegorical book about Jesus as "The Good Shepherd". Hannah Hurnard writes much like CS Lewis. After my brother finished reading this book, he got down on his knees and sincerely prayed, "Good Shepherd, if You truly exist, I will give you my entire life, if only you make MY feet like "Little Miss Much-Afraid"'s and You allow me to walk on The High Places with You! I don't care what price I must pay, just allow me to walk in the heights with You, Jesus. Amen." One week later, my brother was driving home in a 35mph zone when suddenly a drunk driver hit his car, directly from behind at a speed of 82 mph, paralyzing my dear brother, Jeff, from the neck down, permanently! I'm not at all suggesting this will happen to anyone else! But in God's omniscience, He knew Jeff needed to be in what Jeff called "his cacoon of protection" from a very seriously sinful prior life! Jeff suffered for many months at first as he began to learn how to live as a quadraplegic, but he never once complained. Never! He gave thanks to God for answering his prayer in this way. Jeff went on to graduate Liberty University. Then he went out in his wheelchair-lift van to testify and preach. I know that at least one thousand souls were saved after hearing his testimony and seeing the deep, abiding JOY in his eyes and heart! He changed thousands of lives for the Kingdom of God. Jeff died 15 years later, grateful to God and well satisfied that God did enable Jeff to walk on Hinds Feet in the High Places with his beloved Good Shepherd! Just as Jesus changed Little Miss Much Afraid's crippled feet, Jesus changed Jeff's paralyzed feet into the beautiful feet of those who are allowed to walk in the High Places of God's. Perhaps you're looking for a purpose in this life. Or you may just want to read a good allegory of life in Christ Jesus. Whatever your motive, I am sure anyone of any age will enjoy this delightful classic. And this version adds pages of devotions and things to consider with each chapter. I would give this book 100 stars if I could! This book guarantees to delight!

IF, and that is a very big IF, you are in the right place, this book will speak to you on so many levels.I have read it about 5 or 6 different times in my life - in 1979 for the first time, then had my 7th and 8thgrade Sunday School students use this instead of their "assigned" books (each kid "got it" and almost never missedcoming to Sunday School!). I read it again many years later as a mommy to 5 year-old and 10 year-old girls duringLent. The 5 year old recognized her pride-fulness....that's no easy fete! She is 21 now and recently expressed her fondness for this book.If you purchase this and it does not resonate with you, may I suggest you place in on the shelf (not too far away or out of sight) and come back to it again another time? I find it helpful when I am fighting with myself and wanting my own way.....

This is a wonderful story that is told in such a way that it reminded me of "The Pilgrim's Progress", by John Bunyan. It is read by Nadia May, who brings the story even more to life. I first learned of this story written by Hannah Hurnard by reading "No Compromise: The Life Story of Keith Green" written by his wife Melody Green. I learned that this was one of Keiths' favorite stories, and now I can see why. Just like "The Pilgrim's Progress", by John Bunyan, Hannah tells a story of a Christians journey to the high place and the struggles that happen along the way. I recommend this book both to young and old, (I am 53 yrs. old) because it speaks to all of us as Christians no mater our age. That is why I gave it 5 stars and I believe you won't regret buying this book...ever.God bless,Brother Albert

A wonderful book for Christians, especially young Christians who must realize that their Christian walk can and usually will be a winding, uphill journey of sorts that is sometimes filled with unpleasant experiences, oftentimes fearful and intimidating to the natural part of us while, if worked at and conquered, has great potential for producing much spiritual growth, development and strength. For those seeking comfort in another's symbolic treatment of the trials and testings Christians must sometimes endure and overcome to reach their spiritual goal, this is a great read.

The Holy Spirit used the allegorical story of Much-Afraid's journey to the High Places to be as a mirror of my own journey. This story is poignant, instructive and inspirational. It was the right book and the right time for me.I am about to read it again - slowly.

I don't normally gravitate towards fictional stories, but I was recommended this book by a dear friend. And wow, this book has totally transformed my faith! Such an amazing story of Jesus' unconditional love for us; this book puts it in a whole new perspective. As someone who has struggled with chronic fear and anxiety, I relate so much to the main character, Much-Afraid, and the thoughts and fears she has. This is one of my new favorite books, if not the best Christian book I've ever read. If you struggle with fear at all, please read this book!!

This is a very sweet book, I was reading a copy from the library of this devotional and have really enjoyed it so far, but I wanted my own copy to highlight and take notes in. This allegory and its sequel, Mountain of Spices, is really good for anyone who has experienced anxiety or that "not good enough" feeling. You have to get used to the timing of when this was written, but it's a beautiful story and a great journey... I hope this review benefits whoever is considering the devotional. Kindle version has it apart from story so it's still not hard to get into, but getting the story alone isn't a bad idea either.
