I was looking for a book to help me identify my logo on a crock I purchased on vacation. Since I could not find it online, I decided to buy a reference book to help me. This book has some great pottery in it, and gives approximate values for them. Unfortunately for me, it does not help identify pottery. Good book, just not what I wanted.

Not much pottery or pictures in here so not very useful if you dont know what you are looking for.

The descriptions are not always above or below an item. Sometimes they are very hard to follow.The prices are the actual auction price. No information on how to tell where a piece is from, that is not marked. No easy way to read this book.

This is a very good book, so it's a shame they did such a poor job with the electronic formatting. It is full of typographical errors. Some are just amusing, such as the page on which the number "1" is substituted for the personal pronoun "I." Others are annoying - the sloppiness or poor kerning that turns too many "RN" letter combinations into the letter, "M." And I have yet to figure out what "malting" is supposed to be. It is an adjective that occurs several times, but I think it is supposed to be something else.So maybe you should get a hard copy of this book. It is a very worthwhile read. Dorothy Day was an American icon, a home-grown saint,who was so impressed by how well people pulled together in community after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that it formed a basis for how she thought life should be lived. She's an inspiration and this book should be better known.

I love Dorothy Day! I have read her diary & thought this would be about the same, but it's much more! The book could be reviewed in many ways. One could consider history of the times with dates, novels read, private thoughts, life in general or in particular, relationship to the Church, development of self, religious & spiritual development, her writing, radical, feminine, or maternal movements, love: both physical & other, her conversion to Catholicism, her leanings toward justice, unions or her development to her place in caring for others through the housing, meal, farming set-ups she became famous for. The book is dense but very interesting; I marvel at her memory! I was wondering about the title & finally came to it. Amazing insights she had, including that one. She was so aware of her thoughts, life, spirituality with its duality, love, work & especially always being pulled in two different directions. This is a beautiful, deep, readable book. Dorothy Day is highly intelligent, educated, talented, adjusted in any circumstance. Her emotions were strong: a reader can feel her pain & agony, love, joy! The history of the times is valuable for anyone to get a feel for her experiences & learn. Her spiritual journey is inspiring. Her maternal instincts were deep. I could go on about this strong, amazing, humble, holy woman. But it would take far too many pages & I would not do her or the book justice. So, my advice is: Read this great book! You will not be disappointed no matter which facet you're interested in.

This is her autobiography -- she is an amazing soul,beautiful in outlook, couragous in deed -- alwayspushing the "limits" to work for the betterment of the humansituation. What a neat lady! The other amazing thing I found is that her life takes usthrough a time in the history of the US when Worker movements werejust being started. We see some days of WWI, the Depression, WWII,and beyond. She combined her passion to help the 99% and thecompletely down & out, with compassion and lodging and food --real works of mercy. The many different personalities she met duringher life come to life in only a few words -- she's a gifted writer, whichmakes the book read quickly. This is her story, the beginnings of theCatholic Worker movement, and a time in history that has a lot in commonwith our own.

This autobiography is simply told. Dorothy's radical love of the poor and her complete acceptance of Christ's message is inspiring. Saints are not perfect but strive to be. She helped so many of the poor with shelter and a chance to put their life on track. The title sums up her journey through life. She suffered losses and the" long loneliness". She had great faith which enabled her to love her neighbor by living among the poorest and providing all she had for their benefit...

I find it hard to read biographies. This book was not easy for me to read but it was worth reading though. There are passages that are incredibly moving. In particular, I was moved by how Dorothy Day would describe Peter Maurin.I deeply respect and admire Dorothy Day. It is beautiful how God worked in her life.

Dorthy Day was an important person in the social justice movement in the 20th century. Unfortunately her name is not well known today. This autobiography is a great introduction to her personal life and work.

As an English major in undergrad, a current MSW candidate, and a Protestant Christian, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Day's selflessness, compassion, and intelligence are inspirational. This book was one of three options for a social work course assignment, and I am so glad I chose it. That being said, I think I would have better understood more of the earlier portions of book if I had a better grasp on the politics of the time period and of the Communist figures with whom she was involved.

Made me think hard about how to live my life. The book showed me that Christian life is defined by our relation to the brothers and sisters we are given by God. I also loved the wonderful prose of a great journalist. She is an inspiring saint!

I agree with most of the criticism. It's kind of a sloppily written book with odd errors. I can't imagine anyone not familiar with the shop buying the book. The salt and sugar content seem quite excessive. I've never used the recommended 1 teaspoon of salt per quart of ice cream, but did on one occasion use the 1 cup of sugar with the Vietnamese Coffee ice cream recipe, which also calls for sweetened condensed milk, and found it excessively sweet. Usually I use 2/3 cup sugar and a pinch of salt for a quart of ice cream, a system I have worked out and like based on previous experience making ice cream, and find these changes to the basic custard work well for the recipes in this book; I should point out this book uses the same basic base for almost every ice cream.Another interesting difference in their ice cream base is the relatively small amount of egg yolks compared to most other recipes I have seen. This can be a bit of a problem for the home cook as its easy for someone like myself, who only makes ice cream once a month at the most, to slightly over cook the custard and end up straining out a bit of scrambled egg. If you end up over cooking the base too much the ice cream doesn't set well, so adding an additional yolk or too might be useful to the home cook who doesn't make ice cream several times a day' most other recipes I've read use at least 5 yolks per quart, the recipes in this book require only 3.The primary reason I bought the book was for some of the shops more famous (or infamous) recipes such as secret breakfast (the bourbon and corn flake recipe). Unfortunately the bourbon ice cream, probably the reason everyone bought the book, contains a major typo and calls for double the bourbon necessary. I think someone has already pointed this out, but its worth repeating as the ice cream doesn't fully set with the appropriate amount and I can't imagine what would happen if you put the written amount; I imagine it would not set at all! to re-iterate the correct amount is 1/4 cup per quart and not the 1/2 cup written in the book. I happened to see the correction on the shops twitter feed around the release of the book, but I imagine no one woulds know otherwise.I also wish the book include gram measurements as some other books do. I find it very convenient to weigh everything in one or two bowls rather than have to clean multiple measuring cups and was a little surprised that a cookbook by a former pastry chef at a fine dining restaurant did not do so (the owner used to be the pastry chef at Coi in SF a 2 star michelin restaurant). I would also agree with the reviewer who mentioned this book could have been a little more detailed about technique as it appears obvious it is meant for a home cook.For me the book has served its purpose in teaching me the secrets to my favorite flavors, but I can't imagine someone not a fan of the shop having any interest and would agree with the reviewer that recommends the David Lebovitz book The Perfect Scoop as the best all around ice cream book - Lebovitz other dessert books and blog are great too! I also appreciate the story behind the shop and other details of the book that someone unfamiliar would probably not care about.

I've owned this book for 4 years, ever since I first visited the Humphry Slocombe shop in San Francisco. I didn't buy it for Secret Breakfast; the flavor I make regularly is Chocolate Smoked Salt. And I would buy it again for twice (five times?) the price in a HEARTBEAT for the Chocolate Smoked Salt recipe.I can't speak to the amount of salt in the other recipes in the book (obviously, I'm pro-salt) but I've made and loved the olive oil ice cream recipe in this book – it's more like a subtle citrus ice cream, perfect with toasted or candied pecans on top. Not all the recipes work perfectly: the strawberry balsamic ice cream didn't set for me. The first step in Chocolate Smoked Salt, caramelizing the sugar, always seems like a bit of a disaster in the pan, but once the hot cream mixture is in, the lumps of caramel do eventually melt just fine. I'd strongly recommend using an immersion blender to emulsify the chilled ice cream base – it makes life so much easier.I love and frequently use the Jeni's and Bi-Rite Creamery (Sweet Scoops and Sugar Cones) cookbooks as well. Jeni's is the platonic ideal of ice cream cookbooks; Bi-Rite Creamery is good for children or a really sweet tooth (and the lemon ice cream is amazing!). Humphry Slocombe is a good book for people who already have some ice cream making experience and a healthy skepticism. But neither Jeni's nor Bi-Rite Creamery is going to give you Chocolate Smoked Salt.

Now that I live far away, I thought I’d buy the book to try to learn some of the recipes on my own. I’m a proficient home cook and have made plenty of ice cream. I wish I hadn’t bought this book.It really soured my memory of the store. I kept thinking, what kind of jerk wouldn’t catch this ...? Is this intentional? (Have you ever tried to bake cookies for 30 g*d minutes)? For the experienced home cook, just go to their website, check out the flavor list, do some googling, and play around ... I swear you’ll be better off than buying the book. If you want to build your foundational knowledge, go with Leibovitz. Two stars instead of one because I’ll forever appreciate the original creativity and flavor inspiration.

This is an excellent guide to hikes in the DC region! Buy it and you will have somewhere to go every weekend for at least the next two years--and almost always they will be places you have never been before. I lived in Georgetown and I am an avid hiker. Arrogantly, I thought I knew all the hikes and paths and getaways and places that no one else knew. Then I bought this book: I was wrong. So I bought copies for all my friends. They, too, have had the same response. But it is not just that the book lists so many hikes. The author's style is so informative and fun to read that you could just sit down on a Saturday night with a glass of wine and learn so much--and sometimes be moved by her observations. Plus, the book is as practical as can be. Is the trail kid-friendly? What should you bring? What do you need to know that the brochure at the trailhead doesn't tell you? How long does it take to get there? The organization, maps, and pictures are excellent. In short, this is just an excellent book if you live in or around the District and you like to get out.

Since my boyfriend and I were new to the area, we got this book to help us get to know the area hikes. It is a good book for helping choose hikes. We love the waterfall hikes. A great feature of the book is that the maps in it show different trail systems that link together, which the trail maps at the locations don't always show. This is common along the Potomac River, since the Potomac Heritage Trail is not shown on the maps at the local riverfront parks. Now that we know the area, we don't use the book as much. We have also found a few errors in the book, but nothing substantial. If going to a more remote area, like the Shenandoah, it is good to have a trail map as well as the book.

The book is great. It includes lots of hikes that are right in my backyard and I didn't even know were there. So far I've only done a few, but I've been very happy with those and can't wait to do more.

I've read a lot of hiking books and this is one of the best, if not the best guidebook I've come across in a long time. Too many of these types of books just present information with medic al sterility; they just describe the hike mile by mile and it becomes tedious to read. This isn't the case with this book as it has a great mixture of need-to-know information about the hikes and also interesting tidbits and historical facts. The author is an excellent writer and it makes the book genuinely enjoyable to read. I actually bought two copies of this book and gave one to my sister in law and she loves it also. I highly recommend this book.
