This is an excellent guide to hikes in the DC region! Buy it and you will have somewhere to go every weekend for at least the next two years--and almost always they will be places you have never been before. I lived in Georgetown and I am an avid hiker. Arrogantly, I thought I knew all the hikes and paths and getaways and places that no one else knew. Then I bought this book: I was wrong. So I bought copies for all my friends. They, too, have had the same response. But it is not just that the book lists so many hikes. The author's style is so informative and fun to read that you could just sit down on a Saturday night with a glass of wine and learn so much--and sometimes be moved by her observations. Plus, the book is as practical as can be. Is the trail kid-friendly? What should you bring? What do you need to know that the brochure at the trailhead doesn't tell you? How long does it take to get there? The organization, maps, and pictures are excellent. In short, this is just an excellent book if you live in or around the District and you like to get out.

Since my boyfriend and I were new to the area, we got this book to help us get to know the area hikes. It is a good book for helping choose hikes. We love the waterfall hikes. A great feature of the book is that the maps in it show different trail systems that link together, which the trail maps at the locations don't always show. This is common along the Potomac River, since the Potomac Heritage Trail is not shown on the maps at the local riverfront parks. Now that we know the area, we don't use the book as much. We have also found a few errors in the book, but nothing substantial. If going to a more remote area, like the Shenandoah, it is good to have a trail map as well as the book.

The book is great. It includes lots of hikes that are right in my backyard and I didn't even know were there. So far I've only done a few, but I've been very happy with those and can't wait to do more.

I've read a lot of hiking books and this is one of the best, if not the best guidebook I've come across in a long time. Too many of these types of books just present information with medic al sterility; they just describe the hike mile by mile and it becomes tedious to read. This isn't the case with this book as it has a great mixture of need-to-know information about the hikes and also interesting tidbits and historical facts. The author is an excellent writer and it makes the book genuinely enjoyable to read. I actually bought two copies of this book and gave one to my sister in law and she loves it also. I highly recommend this book.

Disappointing. Not the quality education the first book was. This is more or less a collection of photographs of arrangements.

This wonderful book is a master class in flower arranging. It contains page after page of simple, straightforward examples of how to create beautiful floral presentations, all illustrated with gorgeous photos. I'm in awe of the beautiful pictures and patterns!

As a crafter, I am excited to use the motifs included in this book. I can see many opportunities to use whole or partial sections of the designs. It was interesting to see how the knots are formed.

Great, well-done book, well-known author. Delves into the interesting history of the Celtic knot along with easy to follow instructions for the many colorful patterns shown. Have always been curious about how I could incorporate the knots into my gourd art. Artists and crafters would benefit from reading this book. New techniques. Will definitely use the patterns. Happy to have in my collection of art books.

This text has color plates which detail the intricate workmanship of all things Celtic. A how-to on how to make projects and a must read for the novice. New styles are shown and this is a book to have in one's private library for reference.

The focus is on lead singer Jeff Tweedy, positioning him as the band's primary creative force and sometimes tyrant. He began his musical career as a bass player for Uncle Tupelo, one of the groups that kicked off the punk-country-folk blend that Wilco continues to develop today. After a clash of egos with bandmate Jay Farrar, Uncle Tupelo dissolved in the early 1990s and Tweedy formed Wilco, pushing himself into a more heavily produced sound without losing the quality of songwriting that made Uncle Tupelo so popular. The release of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot serves as an endpoint, giving the book a sense of narrative drive that most other band biographies don't have. Including the story of battling labels, contracts, and artistic expression versus commercial potential, the book represents a unique and informative portrait of the music industry. About a week after I finished this book, Jeff Tweedy received some props in Nick Offerman's new "21 Great Americans" book. Even though it's a bit tongue & cheek, I think Offerman efficiently explains why Tweedy is such a fascinating artist- stories of being true to oneself & one's artistry. Offerman- who has hosted Tweedy as a special guest on his TV sitco- loves Tweedy's commitment to true artistry, irrespective of the short term financial impact. I too have always loved the music right from the beginning, but the Uncle Tupelo style, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot negotiations & online streaming, and the consistent growth/experimentation of Wilco are each fascinating stories for fans of music, art, and humanities.In all those cases, Tweedy wanted to do what his vision called him to do. He didn't care what conventional wisdom suggested- he tried to stay true to his passion. I agree with Offerman that this is what makes the Tweedy story so compelling, in fact - in our 24x7 world of flash before substance- it does make Tweedy an American Hero.

First, the kindle version is loaded with hundreds of typos. Kot would cry if he saw what his publisher did to get it quickly into the world of e-books.I am a huge fan of Wilco (own every disc, seen them live twice) but much like other reviewers, after reading about how the "sausage is made," in some ways I wish I didn't know about it. In reality, Wilco is Jeff Tweedy and his employees. They can be fired at any time for any reason. In the end, I found that most of what I enjoy about Wilco comes from these under-appreciated employees, not from Tweedy. Kot does his best to make excuses for him, but Tweedy comes off like a royal jerk. Also, like other reviewers, I believe that the Uncle Tupelo part went on far too long. A third of the book!I did gain a little insight into the genesis of the music, but I would recommend watching "I am trying to break your heart" on DVD instead of reading this book.

Being a Wilco fan and growing up in a town in southern Illinois not far from where Jeff Tweedy grew up, I bought this book primarily to read about Wilco and Uncle Tupelo's early days.Overall, the book reads more or less like an extended magazine article, like something you'd read in Rolling Stone or Spin, except that it's 250 pages long. As a Wilco fan, I quite enjoyed reading about Jeff Tweedy's early life and some of the background stories to some of their songs. Since the book ends around the time of "A Ghost Is Born", it would be nice if Kot writes a follow-up book (or additional chapters to be added in newer versions of this one) about Wilco's more recent years.However, if you are not a Wilco fan, I can't imagine that you'd get much out of this book.

Really enjoyed reading this. It was my first exposure to any of Tweedy and the band's back story. Fascinating. I couldn't put it down.

Luke Harding is a journalist, writer, and award-winning foreign correspondent for the Guardian. Between 2007 and 2011, he was the Guardian’s Moscow bureau chief. The Kremlin expelled him from the country in the first case of its kind since the Cold War. He is the author of five previous nonfiction books: A Very Expensive Poison: The Assassination of Alexander Litvinenko and Putin’s War with the West, The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man, Mafia State: How One Reporter Became an Enemy of the Brutal New Russia, WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy, and The Liar: The Fall of Jonathan Aitken (the last two co-written by David Leigh.) The book reads like a spy novel which I really found engrossing! A real page turner! What I find really interesting is that NONE of the one star and two star reviews are verified purchased reviews! So I’m guessing that some Trumper-trolls are putting fake reviews up!!! Not surprising in the least! Great read! Really good book!!! Bravo Mr. Harding!!!

I plowed through this book and found it enlightening and well-researched. Although supporters of Trump keep up the mantra of “no collusion”, this book does much to disprove the claim. This work of Harding is powerful in part because it puts years of reporting together into one coherent narrative. The connections between Trump and his associates/Family to Russia are many and this author does a beautiful job weaving together, with evidence, how deeply entwined they are. The story is not yet complete but in reading this book, the citizenry is more thoroughly informed.

This book has long-term, historic value. It goes far beyond what Donald Trump did. It documents with authority who Donald Trump is. His record of involvement in crime, corruption and essentially treason will long guide Americans in avoiding tragedy. Unlike Trump's activity after 2013, his earlier history will not be dramatically revised or updated from the account documented in this book. Americans are greatly indebted to Mr. Harding.

Luke Harding is an accomplished journalist who got his chops as Moscow bureau chief for a leading British newspaper. He earned the right to tell this story and witnessed many events firsthand. He introduces the reader to Christopher Steele, a highly qualified and much maligned M16 intelligence officer forced into private practice. Luke writes with objectivity reflective of his journalistic training and suspense befitting a top-selling spy novel. I read this book, then ordered and read Gen. Michael V. Hayden's book and another by James R. Clapper. I recommend all three, plus Jane Mayer's just-released article in the New Yorker magazine (24 Sept 2018) if you really want to appreciate the motivations behind, causes, and effects of Russian meddling in the U.S. and other national elections. Scary!

This book is a must read for anyone wanting to understand Donald Trump 's actions toward Putin. It is an in-depth analysis of the Steele Dossier. The story spans decades and all the players are described in easy to understand detail. It is not as detailed as volumes will be fifty years from now, but it is a beginning of what will play out as Democracy's biggest threat of an early Twenty-first Century.

Way more new information and synthesis than “fire and fury”. Paints a damning picture. A great read — before it becomes out of date as even more information comes out!

Very well written and really holds one’s attention.

Definitely recommended. Great narration. Better than the other more famous book by miles. This book is based on facts, not gossip. A+

And despite the hype that has preceded this book, it was not what I expected. Instead of attacks on his enemies, shrill denunciations of political stands he despises, or praise of himself and his allies, John McCain offers us his version of King Lear. He offers the thoughts of a man who, toward the end of his life, does his best to see clearly, whatever may have come before.McCain is part of a diminishing cohort of conservatives devoted to American exceptionalism. For McCain, American exceptionalism is found foremost in our stance outwards, toward the rest of the world. He wants both American interests and American moral virtues to be served, and the chief obstacle he sees to this now is not Trump (whom McCain attacks surprisingly little, though he does attack House Republicans quite a bit) but Vladimir Putin. McCain sees Putin as, if not evil incarnate, certainly a very grave threat to us, to Europe, and more generally to the liberal democracy embodied in both. Quite a bit of the book is taken up with discussing this problem, and McCain has also written several pithy opinion pieces, such as recently in the Wall Street Journal, making the same points.The overlap between those who believe in American exceptionalism and those Republicans opposed to Trump is pretty significant, but really, they are different things. McCain thinks that America’s best years are not necessarily behind us, and while things may not be perfect, there is a deep reservoir of ability and possibility in America, however it is made up at any given time, including by immigrants. This was, for the most part, also Ronald Reagan’s view, and the split on the Right today is, in large part, a dispute about whether Reaganism is still viable today. While he does not spend any significant time talking about Reagan in this book, McCain is very much in the Reagan mold, although it’s not clear whether that really has a future in today’s Republican party.Of course, as he is the first to note, he himself probably doesn’t have much of a future on this earth. That knowledge focuses his thought, and he is comes across as a man of courage ready to exit the stage. Part of that courage, combined with clarity, comes out in his admitting that the Iraq War was a mistake. Oddly, that puts him on the same page with Donald Trump, the only Republican candidate (other than Rand Paul) who took the same position. But there is a lot to be said for honesty, and it helps the reader believe McCain legitimately holds the other positions he takes in this book.That said, as I say, it’s not like this book is a political polemic. Much of the rest of the book is taken up with reminiscences, mostly fond, and all interesting. The Restless Wave is not an attempt to settle scores; it is the last public words, in effect, of a lion in winter. As he says, “I have loved my life. All of it.” Whatever his faults may be, McCain is a giant of a man, formed by a past age, and we will not see his like again.

Equating US actions with that of the Russian is a false equivalence.Doing the moral thing and doing the practical thing do not have to be at odds.One of my favorite stories: McCain criticized President Obama after Obama did not order strikes on Syria after Assad used chemical weapons. Later, Obama invited McCain for a private one on one meeting to discuss his rationale, and to solicit McCain’s rational.Both sides were respectful, firm and cordial. In the end, neither side were swayed, but both sides walked away with a better understanding of the other side.As for tone, the book is a good mixture of pride, regret and wistfulness. He was more than willing to acknowledge his shortcomings, which is one of the reasons I have always liked himIt’s the way I would hope our leaders would act. I wish he was our president.I highly recommend.

Frankly, I don’t know that much about John McCain, but the sentiments in this book are truths. McCain is closer to death than ever before, and that’s a freeing place to be. He doesn’t need to worry about what we think of him or if he’ll get re-elected. He seems to be honest about errors and regrets, admitting to multiple misjudgments and mistakes that he’s made over the course of his life.This book isn’t getting the air or attention that Trump’s book did. Sadly. It’s not a fluff piece; it’s a long, hard read. I found myself crying more than once over the circumstances of an interrogation, a battle, the image a POW sewing an American flag inside his shirt… That’s what I take from this book the most, that John McCain is a patriot who values what that flag stands for, and he’d like us all to remember to be patriots above all.McCain would like us to behave with honor toward our countrymen, to our friends, and to our enemies. He’d like us to place human rights first, even when our lives are at risk: “I want to urge Americans, for as long as I can, to remember that this shared devotion to human rights is our truest heritage and our most important loyalty.”And I think that’s where this book really shines, where McCain reminds us that our country needs us to hold our government and leaders to the ideals America was founded upon. We cannot let fear change us. “We’re not always right. We’re impetuous and impatient, and rush into things without knowing what we’re really doing. We argue over little differences endlessly, and exaggerate them into lasting breaches. We can be selfish, and quick sometimes to shift the blame for our mistakes to others. But our country ‘tis of Thee.’ What great good we’ve done in the world, so much more good than harm.” And he points out where our country has harmed its reputation and its integrity by denying others their rights simply because they’re different or we think they’re the enemy. He points out what went wrong after 9/11 with the treatment of prisoners and what’s been done since to correct that. We can only pray that nothing like that ever happens again.He admits that we haven’t always been in the right, but that when we were wrong, it was because we were denying the rights of others, even to the point that things were happening so against the Geneva Convention that in McCain’s view, we were acting worse than the Vietnamese acted toward him and his fellow POWs. That’s pretty sad, when we do worse than those we hold up as despicable.“Will we act in this world with respect for our founding conviction that all people have equal dignity in the eyes of God and should be accorded the same respect by the laws and governance of men? That is the most important question history ever asks of us. Answering in the affirmative by our actions is the highest form of patriotism, and we cannot do that without access to the truth. The cruelty of our enemies doesn’t absolve us of this duty. This was never about them. It was about us.” We cannot allow our enemies to change what our country stands for.The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations is a tome with much attention to detail, fascinating in its coverage of the various areas of conflict, the strategies, the personalities, successes, and errors. It’s refreshing to be reminded of how many times McCain voted against the party line, worked with Democrats, and was friends to those on both sides of what has become a crippling divide in our country. And how many times he tried to do the same in other countries where we were involved in conflict. I hope there are many others who are trying to cross divides to meet the other side so that both sides can ultimately win.I would have liked to see John McCain or anyone, actually, elected and acting as a true bipartisan president. I’d like to think someone could do that. We could use one.
