When I was a teenager, I devoured the first of several books I’ve read about the infamous Lizzie Borden (“Lizzie Borden took an ax, gave her mother forty whacks; when she saw what she had done, gave her father forty-one.”) I became fascinated with true-murder stories, and over the years I’ve read several. Perhaps as I matured, my thirst for murder, thank goodness, lessened, so it has been quite a while since I delved into true crime. But when I heard about Skip Hollandsworth’s The Midnight Assassin, I knew I had to read it. It has one of the things I like in a book: a compelling story set in Texas, my home state. Hollandsworth’s book is compelling, indeed. He spent hours and hours perusing old news stories, interviewing descendants, and peering over vintage photographs to piece together the story of the first serial killings in the US. We find, in the epilogue, that the author became so engrossed in his research that he had an overwhelming desire to solve these murders from well over a century ago. I won’t tell you if he did or not, for that would spoil the hunt. Hollandsworth, a journalist, does not just relate the murders, however. He also “sets the scene,” giving us copious details about Austin, Texas, at the time of the murders. And his writing style is far from cold journalism. While leading up to yet another murder, the author regales the good times, the calm, the everyday living going on in the town, and then he whops us with a two sentence chapter ending that sets us smack in the middle of yet another killing. And what makes this technique even more compelling is that not every chapter that utitilizes the “fun times” narrative ends with a gruesome murder, so we, the readers, are constantly wondering if he is leading up to another horrific crime or not. And along the way, we are treated to tales of the politicians, the lawmen, the doctors, the servants, the prominent citizens, and the blunders that made Austin the town it was in the late eighteen hundreds. This is fascinating journalism and fascinating story-telling.

In depth history of one of America's first (or possibly the first) serial killer set in 1880's Austin, TX.The book, while mostly interesting, reads really almost more like a research paper or a dissertation than a book. More time was spent describing events, styles and general happenings in 1885 Austin than dissecting the actual murders and their aftermath. I understand that the author had to work with the limited information available to him, but I felt more like a was reading a book about the politics of Austin, the building of the capital, the growth, the outdoor lighting and general philosophy of the day than reading a mystery.Definitely a well researched book, worth reading (particularly for Texans) and full of interesting tid bits of the day.

Engrossing, painstakingly researched true crime history of America's first serial killer; crimes still unsolved to this day.Author Skip Hollandsworth has brilliantly captured the time and place in his re-creation of the hunt for an unknown killer with the burgeoning growth of Austin, Texas from frontier town to the bustling metropolis of a state capital. A fascinating study which combines all the fear generated by crimes of appalling depravity, investigative incompetence by "Town Hall", racial intolerance and political shenanigans in late 19th. Century Austin. As much a history of a city as of a crime, best summed up by the author's own words in his notes section: "In many ways, Austin became the most interesting character in the book, an intoxicating mixture of the Old South, the Old West, and the new Gilded Age. Because the murders affected every level of Austin society -from the most privileged members of white society to desperately impoverished African-Americans- I had a rare opportunity to create a portrait of race, class, gender, urban life, and, most significantly, the nature of American violence."

Lived in Texas all my life and never heard this story. Not only do you get a history lesson about Austin, Texas, but you will read a bizarre, grisly story that's chilling in every sense of the word. Who could be roaming the streets of Austin late at night killing women for no perceptible reason while often leaving their husbands or lovers damaged, but not dead. And not only killing them but inflicting horrific physical damage. The city becomes paralyzed while both local and imported law officers make no headway. Lots of detail given how long ago it happened (1885), but all necessary and informative.

Fans of Erik Larson will enjoy Midnight Assassin. (BTW, there are at least two other books out there titled Midnight Assassin, so make sure you get the one by Skip Hollandsworth.)In 1884 to 1885, someone was slaughtering women in Austin, Texas. Both black servants and white society women were targeted, and were killed by ax blows to the head. No one ever got a good look at the killer but witnesses insisted he was black. No, white. Bloodhounds brought in to track the killer could never get a proper scent since the crime scenes were trampled by family, police and the multitude of "lookie lou" townspeople. In 1888, when Jack the Ripper began carving up Whitechapel prostitutes, London police wondered if it was the American Midnight Assassin come to town. The reason I've mentioned Erik Larson is because Midnight Assassin is very much like Larson's book "The Devil in the White City" in which serial killer H.H. Holmes built a "murder hotel" at the 1893 World's Fair so he could experiment on, torture, and murder people who came to the fair.Midnight Assassin includes photos from 1880s Austin, and interesting facts about the city and its citizens.

The Flying Tigers: The Untold Story of the American Pilots Who Waged a Secret War Against Japan, by Sam Kleiner

Review

“In the dark days after Pearl Harbor, a swashbuckling band of volunteer pilots gave America something to cheer about with their exploits against the Japanese in far-off China. Through long-lost letters and diaries, Sam Kleiner has brought these gallant warriors to life. The Flying Tigers is a rousing tale that will keep you turning the page.” —Evan Thomas, New York Times bestselling author of Sea of Thunder “This is a movie waiting to be made—a great adventure story that is all the more gripping because it really happened. These pilots remind us of why we’re proud to be American, ordinary young men who became heroes at a time when American victories were scarce. Some were killed, leaving their hometowns grieving. Some spent years as prisoners of the Japanese, uncertain whether they’d ever make it home again. All should be remembered. Kleiner is a gifted researcher and storyteller. He does the story of these men justice, and that is saying something.” —Michael Punke, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Revenant“The Flying Tigers is a meticulously researched work of history that reads like a thriller. Packed with characters that come off the pages, it draws the reader into a world of dare-devil flying and covert operations in China in the opening days of World War II. The Flying Tigers marks the debut of an incredibly talented new historian and is a must-read not only for World War II aficionados but for anyone who likes a good story. It is full of them.”—Amy Chua, Yale Law professor and New York Times bestselling author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother and Political Tribes“As the United States navigates a complex and challenging relationship with China today, The Flying Tigers offers a vivid reminder that our two countries have pulled together in the past to meet shared threats. Sam Kleiner artfully tells the story of the forgotten World War II alliance, and the role of dynamic individuals in shaping it—and anyone interested in understanding America’s relationship with China should delve into this gripping history.”—Jake Sullivan, Former National Security Adviser to the Vice President and Director of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of State“The Flying Tigers has it all: aerial guerilla warfare, foreign intrigue, inspiring heroism, and a Hollywood-worthy cast of colorful misfits, rebels, and patriotic adventurers, all woven into an electrifying narrative.” —Thurston Clarke, author of Pearl Harbor Ghosts and The Last Campaign“Sam Kleiner has bridged a critical gap in American military history with a gripping account of how the Roosevelt administration was secretly leading us into World War II a half-a-year before Pearl Harbor. This is a story with mercenaries, aerial dogfights, love affairs, burning cities and shadow diplomacy but more than that, this tells us how the U.S. got an early jump on its war against Imperial Japan at the beginning of the Pacific Century.”—Tom Zoellner, author of Uranium“Kleiner’s meticulous research provides crucial, unexplored background on Claire Chennault and the formation of the American Volunteer Group and lends important context to Roosevelt’s decision to help China before Pearl Harbor pulled the United States into the war. He covers the topic from the operational perspective without becoming mired in tactical details or irrelevant controversies. His is thus the clearest narrative of the group we’ve been given yet and will doubtlessly capture the imagination of a new generation of readers who have not heard this incredible story.” —Dan Jackson, author of Famine, Sword and Fire: The Liberation of Southwest China in World War II“Sam Kleiner’s book brings back memories of China and Burma. I’m glad he is continuing the legacy of the Tigers.” —Frank Losonsky, last surviving Flying Tiger

My first cousin, George McMillan, was a Flying Tiger and was killed in action. I have just finished reading Sam Kleiner's book. He has done a wonderful job of capturing the human story of the Flying Tigers. For the first time, it enables me to really feel all that George went through, and what life was like for him and the others on a daily basis. --Neil M. McMillan

The Flying Tigers(The untold story of the American Pilots who waged a secret war against Japan)By, Sam Kleiner I purchased this newly published book as soon as I learned of it. It is very well written and researched. Most of you reading this will have no knowledge or recollection of this famous group. Because of my advanced age I do. At the beginning of WWII there was nothing but bad news. We were beaten everywhere by the Japanese. The Flying Tigers was the lone exception. In reading I now know how it was formed. Claire Chennault had resigned from the Army Air Corp and went to China in the 30’s to help them create a Chinese Air Force. In this he was not successful due to the poor quality of the aircraft and the poorly trained pilots. He brought the situation to the attention of President Roosevelt to create a volunteer Air Force of Americans in 1940 to help China, which was before we were attacked at Pearl Harbor. The volunteers for the most part were from our air force. They resigned with the understanding that they could return after serving one year. There were about 100 pilots and an equal number of maintenance personnel. They were supplied with P-40’s which I am proud to state was produced in Buffalo, N. Y. They painted the nose to resemble shark teeth. Somehow sharks became tigers in describing the group. Do to the foresight of FDR and Chenault they were ready at the time of Pearl Harbor and became active. The book covers the events during that year. A few agreed to stay on. Some of those didn’t make it back. Some rejoined the Army, others returned home. Their exploits were spectacular. The Japanese for the first time had equal opposition. Many enemy aircraft were destroyed but the main benefit in my opinion was the huge boost in moral for those of us at home when all else was disaster. They fought over Burma, China, Thailand and French Indo-China. They are credited with destroying 299 Japanese planes with another probable of 153. They also strafed and bombed Army units as they found them. Many were aces destroying 10 or more planes. Many didn’t return home. Those that did received boisterous demonstrations from grateful citizens with home town parades. This is another great book reminding us of the contributions of the “Greatest” generation.Jack B. WaltersJune 27, 2018

I have little doubt that the author researched the facts, but I was sorry he didn’t mention all of the pilots who made up what became known as the Flying Tigers. This may very well be the last publication of it’s kind that is published on their existence as information pertaining to their history is fading. My father was in his very early twenties when he volunteered to fly with them and the stories I overheard in later years spoken between fellow members over Black and White scotches stick with me still. Obviously there was far more to be told.

The Flying Tigers tells about an amazing episode in US history. Kleiner captures many sides to the story: aerial combat; international relations between the US, China, and Great Britain; the personal lives of adventurous young American pilots; and politics of the US Army and Roosevelt administration that guided the US entry into war. The book weaves all of this together to create a rich atmosphere of action and intrigue. Best of all, the book lets the pilots' diaries do most of the talking - quoting these war heroes directly whenever possible, and filling in combat details with original research of combat logs.

The Flying Tigers, led by Claire Chennault, was a group of American men who left the United States to fly in defense of the Chinese. These men used false identities to make their way across the Pacific. Once there, and under Chennault's leadership, these men became the first Americans to take on the Japanese in combat. The results were good; many pilots, including future Marine ace Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, honed their skills in combat and dogfighting tactics. Fighting in the dark early days after Pearl Harbor and often using second-hand equipment, these brave men showed the Japanese that the American pilots were no pushovers.Over the course of several years, the Flying Tigers continually harassed the Japanese while helping to save China from being overrun.Sam Kleiner has written a fine book about one of America's most heroic combat units. Drawing on first-person accounts from Chennault and the pilots, he tells the story of the air battles fought between the Tigers and the Japanese. These men gave America hope during the early days of the war and fought the Japanese to a stand-still.

Sam Kleiner's Flying Tigers dives into the lives of pilots and nurses fighting in the Pacific theater in World War II. Kleiner's vivid storytelling of the American Volunteer Group fighters breaths fresh air into the WWII non-fiction literature. A great read - highly recommend!

I first became familiar with the Flying Tigers when I was a kid and saw the John Wayne movie. I was about 8 years old and fell in love with this striking adornment on the front of the Curtiss P-40. This retelling brought back all those memories and more. I didn't know much about Claire Chennault, but Sam Kleiner has filled in a lot of gaps. It is more than the story of the plane and their pilots, it's very much about the Chinese people and their struggles with tyranny. It does read, however, like the script for a movie. Hard to put down.

First may I say: I am not the target audience. AND I don't want to judge another person's journey.Second: Sometimes a person with ADD can follow another's train of thought better than others. Lean Dunham's train never got near my tracks!Needless to say, I am glad I borrowed it from the library rather than buy it. But there are those out there who will love it so I don't want to discourage anyone from trying it out for themselves. It is nice to see a younger 'sister' learning and leaning in toward her feminist life. Sorry for the troubles she has had along the way. I wish Lean the best in her continued careers.

You know, the former friend from college or high school that you no longer have anything in common with, but who reaches out on Facebook once a year to suggest you “get coffee and catch up.” This usually coincides with some dramatic break up or epiphany she’s had from two weeks spent in a New Mexico sweat lodge. And you think, “How bad could coffee be?” You soon find out as the former friend blabs about her current UTI, chats about her upcoming gyno appointment, details the intricacies of her latest juice cleanse, including how many strawberries go into the juicer, and self-analyzes all the Tinder dates she shouldn’t have slept with but did anyways. This same friend believes her problems would be solved if people just got her intelligence, understood her uniqueness, surrendered to her self-awareness. And after 3 hours of rambling about herself, her cats, her therapist, the rotting milk she left out on the counter, the hole in her sock, the poetry she’s writing about the hole in her sock and the crystal healer she just started going to, she puts down her double macchiato and says, “So, how are YOU doing?”

Before reading this book, I thought Lena Dunham could do no wrong. I love all three seasons of Girls, I've bought magazines I'd never previously read simply because she graced their covers, and I've read all of her online essays. This book is, however, too much Lena. While there are flashes of brilliance in the book, like the essays on the hard-to-define rape she suffered, the teacher who tried to sexually abuse her, and the struggles she's had with being taken seriously by male execs in Hollywood, the majority of the book is filled with musings about her life that are simply boring. I get that Lena believes that standing up and telling your story is the bravest thing anyone can do, but your story has to be interesting in order to be worthy of being published. That's where this book has gone wrong--the publisher clearly thought that anything written by Lena would be lapped up by readers. With each individual essay, her editors clearly didn't step back and ask, 'Is this really worth publishing?'. If they had, the book would be about two-thirds shorter. The title is also misleading, as Lena does not appear to have learned very much, or rather, she doesn't take much interest in imparting her knowledge to her readers. This book has primarily taught me that Lena Dunham is excruciatingly self-obsessed and lacking virtually any self-awareness. She appears to believe that her musings on virtually anything are nothing short of brilliant, no matter how dull and irrelevant the subject matter. The reprinting of several pages of her food diary is perhaps the best illustration of this --a verbatim regurgitation of what she ate for about a week while she was allegedly on a 'diet' (it's really just a pretty standard day's eating for most people) is supposed to communicate what exactly? Her attempts to make even the most mundane interactions with her family appear so powerfully meaningful are odd. The part where she retells a story about how she and her father got stuck in a traffic jam and experienced frustration because, well, they were in a traffic jam is a perfect example of this.In this book, Lena seems consumed by a pressing need to convince you that she feels so many more emotions, so much more intensely than anyone else. She sees quirks and eccentricities in people that others simply cannot comprehend, and you, the reader, need to know that. She is just so brilliant, you guys, don't you see that from all of her deep introspections on how we're all going to die eventually so what's the point?! Lena is so overwhelmed by herself in this book that you can't help but feel like you're suffocating while reading it.This book has killed my love affair with all things Lena Dunham. I admire the work she has done in film and television, no question, and she's an extremely talented writer in both of those genres. I don't think, however, that she can write at the level required to sustain an entire book.I will view Lena Dunham from afar from now on. I've thrown out all of those once-hoarded magazines, and although I still love Girls and will await every new season with much anticipation, I'll watch it from now on with a degree of detachment.

Eh, I love Lena Dunham but I expected something deeper and more intriguing. I can listen to any random girl on the street tell me about how her middle school boyfriend was weird and she gets annoyed with her family sometimes... but I would have liked to have found more in this book that is truly eye opening and impactful. I know she has it in her to provide that sort of insight but it just didn't come through here.

I love "Girls" and Lena. I wanted to like this book. There are amazing sentences, but it is not good overall. I stopped reading it.

Waste of money. Throughout, it is just her saying uncomfortable things nobody wants to hear about her. You would expect it to be funny, but it is not at all.

She's so annoying. I get it you where brought up privileged but you come off as if everything you say is important and the truth. I was a fan but you come off as entitled and whiny.

I am a mother of three and am constantly on the go. I have never considered meditation because frankly the thought of trying to find a quiet spot to sit for a long period of time by myself in complete silence seemed insane I cant even go to the bathroom by myself lol. However I did want to find more peace in my life and that's when someone had mentioned mindfulness. So I started reading this book not knowing what to expect. Honestly I assumed I wouldn't understand half the stuff in it as I've never tried anything like this and thought you'd have to be like a Buddhist level to truly understand it. When I began reading I was super excited! Not only is this book extremely easy to read and comprehend it's easy to navigate. Depending on the emotion your trying to work through you can simply look up the exercise for it! Also since the exercises are short and range from 5-15 minutes they are perfect for my busy schedule. The best part of all you can do them just about anywhere. I've caught my self doing some of the exercises in this book while sitting in my car waiting for my kids to come out of karate practice! So if your new to this and want an easy to read go to guide on how to better handle your emotions that works with your busy schedule then this is the book for you!!!

As a longtime student of Theravada and 15 year meditator, I've read many books on Buddhism and meditation. Often these books provide general info that is almost cookie-cutter from one book to the next. This book on the other hand is all about practical and easily accessible methods to "slip" into meditation practice without tripping off the usual ego defense alarm bells. The author's soothing writing style is so disarming that one can easily read a paragraph or two and drift into a soothing, healing meditation session. I am so grateful to have encountered this book and trust it lead many folks into a fulfilling lifestyle filled with the healing power of meditation practice... This book is a healing balm for assaulted minds everywhere!!! Peace... =)

I have meditated for a few years, and have attended a ten day Vipassana retreat/course, so I am not new to meditation. But when asked by friends about the essence of mindfulness, I have always found it difficult to do so. This book in a part preliminary to the exercises, presents a very useful, understandable and accessible discussion of mindfulness in its various aspects. I have gone back and re-read that part a few times. The exercises - which comprise the bulk of the book - are sort of familiar to me as a somewhat experienced meditator, and perhaps not as necessary for me, but nevertheless are nice reminders of the various aspects of meditation. So, four stars for me, and likely five stars for someone just starting to explore meditation - for them, I think, this would be quite valuable.

This book is the perfect practical guide to meditation and mindfulness! I work as a therapist and I often incorperate mindfulness techniques into my therapy practice. What I like about this book is that I can easily flip to a chapter that is relevant to a client and then guide them through the exercise. It is also so easy to show them the steps so they can go home and practice on their own!I am a meditator myself and I really loved the reminder to practice engaged mindfulness. The whole section on working with mindfulness in daily life was so helpful for reminding me to stay grounded while I am going about my every day tasks. Awesome book and I would definitely recommend it to any other therapist or anyone interested in meditation!

This book is a wonderful and important guide to living life to the fullest. No matter what your needs are or what you have to let go of in this lifetime, this book guides you step by step to becoming present and mindful in everyday life. It teaches you to be grounded, energized, forgiving, compassionate, loving and caring, and most of all keeps you in the present moment in daily life. It is a great coping mechanism to all that presents itself. Job well done Matthew!!! You nailed it!!!

I have many resources in this tooic, i didnt find too effective for my school practice with children.

Still reading. So fare very good.

As a beginner to meditation, this book is great! He gives his insight in a relatable way. Definitely a book I will continue to read over and over.
