Review

"Black Book of Poems depicts different persona. It shows an angst about the environment where we are living. It naturally blows up someone's mind if they will indulge into this ... What I love about this book is the dignity of the author to embrace all the flaws, the love, the passion, the respect and the heartbreaks that the epitome of every words reminds me to be brave and be yourself ... Such an amazing poet and poetry book!- abryjewel

In 2001, Vincent moved with his family to Sweden. After graduating high school, he moved to Los Angeles at the age of 19 where he attended Santa Monica City College and later UCLA, where he received a B.A. in English with a concentration in creative writing. Hunanyan's first official title, Black Book of Poems, was published on the 21st of May and became an instant bestseller with raving reviews from critics and poetry fans worldwide. I Wasn't Crying Over You is his first short story collection, published on September 21, mainly comprised of tales derived from the author's childhood growing up in St. Petersburg and his transition from childhood to adulthood. "They say fine writing comes from suffering - I must suffer more."Such says one of Hunanyan's many gorgeous (and unsettling) poems in this follow-up collection to his original Black Book of Poems. And, it is everything anyone would want in a follow-up work - that and more. The author weaves with many of the themes of his original work but creates a far more diverse and textured fabric than he ever has before. Not only is it a more mature book; it reveals a deeper part of Hunanyan's experiences and views on life. He contemplates war, death, love, legacy, the future, and the past. He ponders large questions, ones most of us shy away from.Stylistically, Black Book of Poems II is a departure from its predecessor. It ruminates. It explores. It questions. It swears. Rather than sticking to rhyme schemes and lyrical verse, the book breaks convention, dancing between the old and the new. At some points Shakespeare, at other points Bukowski, these stylistic turns keep you hooked, turning the pages to understand the larger picture. The real question is, what might this larger picture be? What has Hunanyan experienced that drives him to put it to the page and let us share his world? He answers,"Wipe your rainy cheeks my friend - nothing lasts forever. The darkest time of night brings forth the brightest stars of all."Hunanyan has suffered, and we have suffered. He wants us to know: we're in it together.

Hunanyan's gift is his blatant disregard for you as the reader. May you be moved. May you be entertained. May you put the book down to make tea. May you be damned. The exhale-like honesty and brevity of his poems suggests that it's all the same to him. If in the process of reading these self-affirmations and self-condemnations, you are able to glean comfort or project camaraderie with Vincent, I'm sure he would not discourage it, but let us be clear, Black Book of Poems 2 is not some message in a bottle. It is the rock face that you carve your name in on a desert island. An act done, despite it's futility, not because it will aid in your rescue, but simply as an acknowledgement that, at least for a time, you were there. This place was yours and you were it's. Hunanyan invites us to join him there, and to come along for a jarring ride, ebbing from the bottom of the loss-lined pit to moments of flippancy and whimsy, a range more dynamic than his highly touted debut. The poems Black Book of Poems 2 break suddenly, leave little closure, and keep the reader on their toes. It is for this reason that BBP2 seems more self-therapeutic than philosophical/prescriptive. He posits no fixes, gives no answers. But it rings true. For that reason alone, it marks Hunanyan as one of few burgeoning talents in the field willing to crack open his mind and heart and allow the world to take a dip. He should again be applauded.

Black Book of Poems II by Vincent K. Hunanyan is a thoughtful collection of poetry that made me stop and think. While I didn't relate to every poem, I did enjoy reading this collection. I recommend this to fellow poetry lovers who enjoy modern poetry, and yes, enjoyed reading the first collection Black Book of Poems.

Maybe it is my dark side rising, but I am attracted to the pulse of this body of work. Vincent continues to play in the dark and produce something that shines the light on a side we don't often see or feel. They say that practice makes perfect, and Black Book of Poems 2 is headed in that direction. I find myself going back to a select few an feeling more. And feeling more, let alone just feeling, is what many people do not do in their own darkness.Nice job! Can't wait for more...

Vincent is a unique voice among modern poets. The first black book was a treat but this second one has knocked me off my feet. His poetry is beautiful and thoughtful. Poems that deserve to be read. I can't say enough good things. I'm glad that there is someone out there who hasn't forgotten the heart and art of true poetry.

Vincent writes beautiful poetry that everyone can appreciate and relate to. He is a very humble and sweet man. Read the preface before you dive in and be ready to devour this collection in one sitting. Also great if you are a teacher, my students love his poetry and were excited to hear about the release of this book.

I really liked the first Book of poems but this new one is even better! To be honest, I don’t read a lot of poetry but Vincent has got me hooked on this genre. His poems seems so honest and real and very easy to assimilate. And with this book he shows he has grown and developed as a writer. A pure joy to read! Thank you!

If you're considering purchasing this book, stop. Just get it. You will not regret it. It's full of emotion and something for everyone to connect to. It's an amazing follow up to Black Book of Poems. 2 does not disappoint
