I was debating repeating The Artist's Way (which I worked through more than a decade ago), when this new book crossed my path. Excited by the synchronicity and hopeful that the author would have new exercises and insights to offer, I snapped it up and began. Four weeks in, I'm not so sure that I shouldn't return to my original plan. Although "midlife" is prominent on the cover, that theme is absent in the book so far. The examples are all retirement and end-of-life, which feels a bit eery and depressing for someone with a career that actually continues into the future. So far the exercises seem predominantly repetitions - morning pages, artist dates and walking, plus memoirs- effective but nothing new. Methinks the publishers wished to expand the demand beyond the author's clearly-intended senior audience and tagged on a misleading subtitle for extra sales. After 8 weeks, I'm putting it on the shelf to await my future retirement.

They are called"Basic Tools For Creativity Recovery", but I call them "Jumpstarting Your True Self". There are "Taboo Subjects For The Newly Retired". Among oters that are addressed are: boredom, irritability, excitement, and even depression.All of these are addressed to make your life ahead truly authentic and new. I did some of the exciting homework, like walking 20 minutes and letting your mind wander, journaling first thing in the morning, and answering questions about certain periods in your life. They are absolutely incredible. You should do this for twelve weeks straight. I just began for this review. It changes your life in ways you won't even know at first. This book truly is one for the recently retired, who need to find the life that they want to live next. Bruce Springsteen is above all else a GREAT storyteller! His words, whether in his songs or his autobio, say so much. He paints vivid pictures of ppl, times, places, feelings, history. As a rock photographer during some of Bruce's glory days, although never shot him, I am loving his insider's POV. His is truly the Great American Story. He's stayed true to his working class roots, always a patriot speaking Truth to Power. Despite his work being used in the exact opposite of its intentions. That's his universal appeal.IF you like his songs, wonder about the man behind it, and the musicians and times which make up his songs, then how can you NOT love this?I don't understand any negativity. I'm not a big fan. I listen to early Clash, X, early Ramones, early Joni Mitchell, and my punk life began with Patti Smith, before "Because the Night," their collaboration. I could list a lot of rockers and singers I prefer (early Stones, Creedence, ABBA, Amy Winehouse and Screaming Jay Hawkins, I cover the waterfront.)The Boss's words and music make me either get up and dance or go deep and react, think, cry, smile, go with the flow. Never boring. Never predictable. Uniquely HIS style. HIS vision. I admire this genius!Most of all, I always feel like I'm watching a Broadway musical. West Side Story moved to Jersey, to Detroit when we made cars, real Americana.I am a visual artist. It's hard to express in words how much I love this book! I'm NOT a huge fan. Saw him twice and was bored. I missed him in the small shows cos he's east, I'm LA. I simply have a hard time watching a performer further than 30 feet away. His energy didn't transcend larger venues.Despite my lack of interest in him live, some of his songs continue to resonate because of the power and truth of his art. And now his book. A classic, a keeper, intriguing, exciting, enlightening, entertaining. How can anyone NOT love Springsteen and this book? SMH.I borrowed from library, opened randomly, and dug in. Oh wow! I posted on Facebook I want it. Maybe someone will send to me for holidays? Or I'll actually bite the bullet and get the Kindle version cos I just bought a Kindle on Black Friday. Not my first, but had to send others back. IF my Kindle works, I just might get this.

I have been a Springsteen fan for over four decades. I grew up less than 30 miles from Freehold, NJ. I used to go see Bruce in those little seaside bars he used to sing about. I have seen many Springsteen interviews. I have attended over 60 shows. I have read most of the previously published articles and books. Much of the material in this book has never been publicly presented before, and all in his own words. Bruce has obviously spent much time in intense introspection, and he shares many of his insights and conclusions here.Bruce is arguably the world’s greatest showman. Love this book!Danny Gottlieb has given us a true gift. Not only is he a great player himself by virtually creating a new sound with the Pat Metheny Group, but he is a top-flight educator, and an excellent writer. A big, big bonus is that he actually knows these great players. Reading about his conversations and experiences with Elvin Jones, Mel Lewis, Joe Morello, and others is fantastic. I have read most everything about the pantheon of drummers--but Mr Gottlieb's stories are fresh and personal. Most music writers are not players and really have just a peripheral connection to their human subjects--not Danny Gottlieb. There is a mutual respect and fraternity between Gottlieb and these jazz icons.When you get the book you really won't know what to do first. Do you read inside info about your heros, do you sit down behind your drums and attempt some of the transciptions, do you listen to the MP3 or watch the DVD? Frankly, all of this in one bundle should cost twice as much.If you are a jazz fan, musician or not, grab this book--you will love it!

The although the book and CD are about the same as most other books and cd's of jazz drums, the best part of this product is the DVD. The DVD show's all the great drummers of jazz and is well done.

This is a very good book which highlights some 31 important jazz drummers. The exercises are good, with some song transcriptions from the companion dvd.The dvd is very good!!! Lot's of fun to watch some of our drum heros.This book is a good book for the overall history of jazz drumming. It is also a good starting point foreach of the individual drummers. It serves as a 1 stop resource.The reader may choose to do more research for a specific drummer that suits his fancy.

This book has drummers from all eras of music and explores their approach to drumming. It's a helpful tool for drummers.

I do belive this is one of the finest books on Jazz Drumming. I Miss one thing Though: It would be great to add the stikings of some of the solos and etudes (specially on the Philly Joe Jones Chapter). But other than that it is an amazing compilation of ideas and history of the jazz drumming.

This is a good read for those just beginning to explore making money online or even those at the intermediate stage.

Than goodness this was under $1 because what a waste. You have to be living in a cave in a deserted island to not know the information in this "pamphlet". Took me less than a minute to peruse, no need to read.

I liked this book. Easy read. Helpful hints along with specific websites to visit for furthering your endeavors. I especially liked the freelancing section.
