Ms. Autumn Libal has presented a good introductory reference on the work of the United Nations in Peacekeeping and Peace-Building operations around the world.The book is an eighty-eight page hardcover reader, which briefly describes the work of the United Nations in its efforts to keep the peace in troubled areas and also to engage in peace-building activities. The book consists of five chapters describing how the UN was formed; the organisation's structure, how the UN works towards peace and security and a brief history on its peace missions.One chapter is devoted to briefly explaining Disarmament, Peacemaking, Peace-Building and Peacekeeping. The book also has a brief history of Peacemaking and Peacekeeping operations.The book is written in an easy-to-read style and while brief in descriptions and coverage of some sections of the UN's work; it is a useful reference for students and those readers who do not have knowledge of the UN's world operations. The text contains references to various UN organisations with a chronology of Peacekeeping Missions, a brief time line of significant events the UN has been involved in, a Glossary, Bibliography and further reading list. The book is also very well illustrated.In summary a useful and colourful first book on the United Nations, this volume is actually one of a series of books on the work of the United Nations. Well written with information still current, the book was published in 2007. A handy reference for the student or someone seeking general information on the UN's work in peacekeeping and peace-building operations. Good references for further reading, however I felt it was probably a little too brief and found myself needing to find more information in some sections. Well done, Autumn Libal!
