This cruising guide served us well throughout four months of Caribbean cruising. In thumbing through other books, I have yet to find any pilot book as thorough and useful. It is also good value for the money as it covers all the Leeward and Windward islands, using good detail despite the broad scope. We always found the information accurate and dependable. Detail charts of ports are very good (for example, all the wrecks at St Pierre are indicated) and it seems to have done a good job of keeping up with new developments in the islands (such as the new marinas being developed in Grenada and elsewhere). The information is well organized so that you can quickly find the pilot notes and easily distinguish them from other information such as the useful tips on things ashore. Traveling with Ghosts by Shannon Leone Fowler is an incredibly powerful and haunting memoir, a deeply personal story of love and loss that I found hard to put down and couldn’t wait to go back to – something that may sound a little strange to say about someone else’s harrowing experiences (the tragic death of her fiancé, her struggle with the way friends and family dealt with her loss, and her physical and emotional journey through countries and cultures that approach grief differently), but this is a book with an immediate, universal appeal. This comes not just from the themes covered, but also the author’s ability to grab the reader’s attention from the opening line and to keep that attention and interest up to the final word through very well-honed prose (this is a writer with a real talent for painting vivid pictures), and the way the story is told: the complex narrative is made of various flashbacks that could have been clumsy or confusing in less skilled hands, but the flow between present, recent past and older, childhood memories is in fact seamless: it is as if you were in the author’s head, with her thoughts – yet this is no stream of consciousness, there is a strong drive and logic to the construction, but effortless and natural. It works remarkably well, it helps to emphasize that the journey through grief is far from linear.This book made me cry, it made me laugh at times, but mainly, it made me think. A lot. Read it.

I read this astonishing memoir in one sitting - I couldn’t put it down. Fowler doesn’t sugarcoat or shy away from the awfulness of death, and her words stayed with me long after I finished the last page. I found myself wanting to travel to the places she described, and eat the food she was trying there. It’s a soul-searching journey about grief, survival, nature, chance, luck, loss and history. To anyone who’s ever lost someone, or knows someone who has – read this book!

A wonderful memoir, that reminds us to love as many moments with our loved ones as possible. But also shows us that Americans need to learn to treat death as it is, talk about it, face it front first, and hold each others hands when confronted with it. It is also an amazing story about how the rest of the work deals with death, and gives us a way forward.

This is a beautiful book, deep with love and loss and being in the world. Fowler's attention to detail brings us with her as she experiences the terrible circumstances of her fiance's death and her attempts to re-balance herself in the wider, not always safe, world. Love and loss and friendship all rendered in language rich with emotion and description. In rendering such specific and generous details, she also demonstrates the value of travelers keeping a journal of their journey, for their own sake, and in Fowler's case, for ours. I found this book brave and personal and painful to read, but ultimately fulfilling. We go on.

Normally, the best compliment you can give to any author is something along the lines of “I couldn’t put it down.” I can’t say that about Traveling with Ghosts by Shannon Leone Fowler. Instead, I say this book is so powerful, I had to put it down every 15 or 20 minutes. I needed to take time to catch my breath, slow my heartbeat, and reflect on what I’d just read.This memoir deals with grief and loss. Fowler puts us inside her head and we see the world as she does. We feel the emptiness, the despondency, and the guilt she felt when her fiancé died on a Thai beach. We feel, too, the outrage at the Thai authorities who knew of the danger and did nothing about it lest tourism suffer. Our hearts go out in gratitude to the two Israeli women, all too accustomed to dealing with death, who help Fowler come back to life. There are no easy answers provided in the book. Fowler’s sense of loss does not seem to attenuate, but her ability to accommodate herself to it does grow.

I finished this book in two sittings. The author intersperses memory with her loved one with narratives of travelling to different countries, some of which I also had visited, but many I had not. In an age where media tells women they should be afraid and are in need of protection, it was refreshing to read about a woman who charted her own course, confronted her past by confronting herself, and learned survival from her choice of destinations, many of which were poor, war-torn, and rebuilding. Highly recommend.

Perfectly written. A really hard story to tell. I lost three of my best friends during a field trip (I am also a biologist). The book made me feel a lot, I was sad, angry and meditating about life. I remebered losing my friends and how we had to recover. I spent my days at work thinking about Eastern Europe and the lessons she was learning. I searched information about the wars, I learned about history. I understood her passion for her job, but also how she didnt want to go back to it. I highly recommend it

Brilliantly constructed and poetically written. For anyone who has ever lost someone (which is just about everyone) this memoir is about the journeys we undergo trying to come to grips with grief. Powerful and moving.

This book contains many grammatical and lexical errors, which make a lot of sentences/questions void of any sense. There is at least one major error per page and there isn't much text on every page. This is especially a problem for the target audience because they are often not aware of them and learn everything incorrectly. This is absolutely ridiculous that a book supposed to teach English did not go through basic proofreading! Obviously, formatting and editing errors are also present, including cut off sentences or extra words. Definitely do not recommend for anyone trying to learn English!

Jamie Oliver grew up in his parents' country pub, the Cricketers in Clavering, where he started cooking at the age of eight, before studying at London's Westminster Catering College. My husband has food sensitivities, so I've been cooking at home for a long time. I mainly bought this book to generally support the movement and see what Jamie Oliver was up to with the Food Revolution. I didn't expect to really find many--if any--recipes that I would be able to use. But I did.The good:* TONS of photos. Every single recipe has photos, both of the finished dish and of the preparation. Yay!* He doesn't just give you the recipe (add 2 onions, chopped). He walks you though the process (Chop two onions and set aside). So you can usually cook as you read the recipe.* He tells you what to serve with the recipes, and the recipes for suggested sides are in the book. Yay!* Many of the recipes can be easily adapted for allergen-free cooking. My husband is senstive to gluten, corn, dairy, honey, legumes, and some nuts. That's a long list, and I was still able to adapt several recipes.* He offers recipes for all meals: breakfast food, lunch food, suppers, desserts. You could use this as your only cookbook.* The dessert section is amazing. We generally don't eat dessert in our house...at all. I think sugar makes you want more sugar, and it's a nasty cycle. But these desserts, while clearly luscious, include a lot of healthier stuff in the preparation, like fruit and oats. And the photos depict appropriate serving sizes. They look very elegant. I'm glad I'll have something wholesome to serve when company visits.The not so good:* There isn't any nutrition data for the recipes* Some of the recipes, while simple, can take some real time to prepare (fine by me, but I'm not trying to whip together dinner in a frenzy when I get home from work)* Many of the recipes serve 2 people. Which is fine, but it took me some time to adapt. I've purchased ingredients for a recipe only to realize later that I didn't get enough.In the end, the recipes are quite good. These are not recipes that will show up in Gourmet magazine. And they won't all make the list of the world's healthiest foods either. There are several comfort food recipes...spaghetti, stew, cheesy pastas, roasts. But overall, I'm pleased. Even experienced cooks will be able to find some things of interest here. And this is an awesome collection for someone trying to transition to real food from a diet full of McDonald's and pizza rolls.Update: I've cooked several more recipes from this book since I wrote this review, and I am growing more and more pleased. At first I blew off some of the recipes; I thought I didn't need another recipe for roasted chicken. But I made it, and it's great. I have cooked many recipes from the book now, and so far nothing has flopped. This is the only cookbook I own that I can say that about.Update #2: I'm still cooking from the book all the time. I'm a complete convert. I've purchased copies for other family members now...even for my total foodie of a father-in-law. We are all fans, and the majority of my everyday recipes now come from Jamie Oliver. Everyone knows I'm a Jamie Oliver fanatic now, so when people like something I cook they don't ask, "Where did you get the recipe?" They ask, "Is this from Jamie Oliver?" I've become a proselytizer for the book. And still, after all this time, nothing has flopped.

I bought this book 7 years ago, just after I had my first child and decided I wanted to up my cooking skills a bit. A friend of mine who had lived in London for several years and married someone from there recommended it -- she said her husband was used to always having home-cooked meals (something she wasn't used to) and they really enjoyed cooking from this cookbook together. I began making several recipes from it on a regular basis, and even gave a copy to a friend (a much more well-seasoned cook than I) who also really enjoyed it. Fast forward a few years -- we moved across the country and got busy renovating a house and had a second child and cooking from scratch fell by the wayside and all my cookbooks piled up. Last month, I decided it was time to step things up a bit and I pulled out this cookbook. My two boys (now 5 and 8) have absolutely loved what I've made so far and we've had a Jamie Oliver revival in our house. The beauty of this book is in its simplicity -- it's written in such a way that those who have never cooked from a recipe a day in their life would feel comfortable with how it's written (no fancy culinary words), yet a seasoned cook could still find inspiration. The dishes have a reasonable amount of ingredients, and most don't require anything unusual that you couldn't easily pick up in your grocery store. They are not too time consuming, either. The first time or two you make a recipe it may take a little longer, but once you get the hang of it it becomes much quicker. Our absolute favorite recipe is the Meatballs and Pasta. Everyone in the family enjoys it!

I can't recommend this cookbook enough. Perfect for newlyweds, single guys, and anyone who cooks, really! Even if you are an advanced cook, it has plenty of recipes that are practical, easy, and flavorful. I've never had a recipe fail. It covers a lot of basics, which are sometimes simplified, so don't expect the usual cookbook full of unique recipes (that you never actually try making). This book is sort of a crash course in home cooking, so you can refer to it for the everyday staples of family dinnertime. You might conceivably cook each one of these recipes. If you open it any given day, you'll easily find something you can make that very night, not on some special occasion.It really has changed my cooking for the better. Because of this book, I've learned how to make homemade salad dressings in seconds, whip up a quick and fresh curry, and throw together a cheap and rich pasta sauce.Jamie Oliver's writing style reflects how you really cook. No asking for 2 tablespoon of oil--he just tells you to pour a "glug" of olive oil in the pan. Cooking is rarely that precise about measurements anyway, unless it involves baking.Cheap is key here: I can cook an complete, Sunday-type dinner for less than $5 per person (and usually less). It sure beats fast food for cost, taste, and nutrition. Good stuff.

I am often asked to mentor other cooks and help them with new and unfamiliar cooking techniques. I remember how fearfully I approached roasting my first chicken. This book has proven not only an ideal resource for fairly new cooks but also proves its value for those who already know their way around the kitchen. I bought it for myself when it first came out, and I have given several copies as gifts since. It is a good antidote to the fear of cooking real food.

I'm a lazy cook who always thinks of reasons to buy prepared and processed food: kitchen too cluttered, dishes to do, a pitiful pantry from which to select, urgent places to be, etc, etc, etc. But this book, along with the tv series, has convinced me it's time to learn how to eat properly and nutritiously. The recipes are approachable and not intimidating, and as soon as I can use my kitchen, I'm going to try some of them...

Great book. I feel like this book gives good examples of worrying and how to cope with them. Also this book gives a lot of opportunity to branch activities off of it. I was overall impressed.

My 5 year old daughter is a big worry-wort. I don't know where she gets it from, but worry, worry, worry is what she does. A friend recommended this book, and I am so glad she did. I didn't give my daughter much background, just started reading. Wemberly worries about everything big and small. There are cute illustrations to go with each simply written page. At the end of the story, Wemberly makes a new friend and learns she does not need to worry so much.As I read the book to my daughter for the first time, her smile grew and grew, especially when we read about Wemberly rubbing the ears of her special rabbit, the way my daughter does with her "lovey." When we got to the end, she immediately asked me to read it again, and then again two more times. After the initial reads, we had a really good heart to heart about worries. Seeing Wemberly overcome her worries helped more than me saying "don't worry." I won't say my worry-wort has been magically reformed, but the book was a good conversation starter that was on her level. I highly recommend for the little worrier in your life.

This is a lovely book for little ones who are getting ready to start kindergarten or preschool. While this likely gets selected most of all for children who express a lot of worries, it’s also great to share with kids who are thrilled to try new things. Why? It gives them a chance to develop empathy and understanding for their friends — and for families to talk about how to help out friends who seem scared, nervous or shy.Overall, it’s a sweet, simple story about looking to adults and other kids when faced with fears.

A must-have book for your worriers, big or little. I once owned a business and had several really great kids working with me. One of them worried about EVERTHING ALL THE TIME. She was the kind of person who really didn't have to worry about anything. But she kept worrying . Now she is an elementary school teacher and she reads it every year to her "worriers". I also gave one to my own 15-year old worrier just recently. Wemberly will stay with whoever reads it for a lifetime.

Not my favorite story. I was hoping it would help with anxiety but I dont feel like it gets the message across very well. It wasnt relatable enough for us. Good book to practice the W sound if you need to though.

This is a funny and entertaining way to relax. I love these filthy coloring books.

I am disgusted with the language...I am surprised I ordered it! Guess I didn't read enough. The pictures are fine for coloring if one can get beyond the message.

There are definately some new eye popping swear words in this book, great patterns :)

This is an impressive and substantial book. Essentially, it is a true crime book that centers around the still-unsolved murder of William Desmond Taylor. Rather than being constructed as a linear mystery story, it is a ‘contextual’ book that sets the murder mystery within a series of ever-widening narratives. As such, it looks at the film industry in the early 1920’s, focusing on the career of Adolph Zukor and explores other scandals: the Olive Thomas drug-related death, the addiction of silent screen star Wallace Reid, the Fatty Arbuckle case, the Mabel Normand addiction story, Margaret Gibson’s arrest for prostitution, and so on. The overall ‘story’ cuts between the life stories of all of these individuals, plus Will Hays of the ‘Hays Office’, the con-artist crew of Don Osborn and the comings and goings of Mary Miles Minter and her mother, Charlotte Shelby (the latter a prime suspect in the murder case).The advantage here is that with all of these contexts and players the story is enriched immeasurably. The problem is that the story is also more diffuse and very, very long. Those with an interest in aspects of the story (the studio system; censorship; cultural history; cinematic history; the Taylor murder case per se) may feel that they are being forced to learn more than they want to about subsidiary issues. Those with an overarching interest in all of the contexts will feast on the book.While the book utilizes novelistic devices, it is scrupulously factual, to the degree possible, though the author’s speculation on Taylor’s killer is just that: speculative. It is also plausible and fits the available facts, though it does involve a leap of faith.The author praises Sidney Kirkpatrick’s A Cast of Killers, a predecessor book that arrives at different conclusions concerning the actual murderer. In my opinion, SK’s book is one of the monuments of true crime writing and should be read by anyone interested in the Taylor case. SK’s book is more focused and much more of a true crime mystery story, though it is less substantial than Tinseltown.I recommend this book highly, but with the proviso that the reader is in for a long story some of whose details may prove to be far more interesting than others. The illustrations are helpful, though the legends accompanying them are not always precise. The author’s choice for the murderer, e.g., is not identified as such in the illustrations. The author’s knowledge of 1920’s Hollywood (and its management from New York) is impressive; he has done his homework in working through archival material. The result is a commercial book with many of the trappings and advantages of a scholarly book. Check it out.

This is a highly-readable, very interesting book. The writing is so graceful and the characters so interesting that it reads like fiction. Yet the book seems thoroughly researched. The author makes a point of noting that he didn't assign words or thoughts to any of the characters that had not been indicated in their writings or in articles of the time. The book changed my opinion about some of the people I had heard of before; Mabel Normand seems an independent, thinking young woman, and Will Hays was not actually a moralistic censor.Though I had known that attitudes about some drugs were very different then, I was startled to learn how readily-available and prevalent drugs were in early Hollywood. This book also suggests something I had read elsewhere-- that organized crime really got its first important foothold in this country during Prohibition. It's depressing to learn that actors have been dying because of drugs since long before the 1970's. Only the names of the people and the chemicals change.This isn't to say that the book itself is depressing. Some of it is sad, but there is also humor. The story is fascinating, and I would recommend the book to anyone who is interested in the history of film or celebrities.

What makes his case somewhat unique is that there were deliberate efforts from people high-up in the movie industry to ensure that the case remained enigmatic and unsolved. Evidence was concealed, misleading rumors were launched, and mouths were kept firmly shut. As very little reliable evidence about the mystery survives, all theories about the case are necessarily based on speculation."Tinseltown" is no exception to this rule, but William J. I believe Mann may have made a mistake in dismissing all possibility that brother Dennis and Sands the valet somehow figured in the murder.Still, this book is wonderfully absorbing reading. Even if you have little interest in true crime, the soap-opera like saga found in these pages is almost certain to draw you in.

I have spent the past few weeks reading through this cookbook and investigating products that are recommended to be used, etc and was able to find the necessary items. I finally made the brioche (started a few days ago) today and it looks amazing. It is still cooling from the oven. While making the dough, I felt like it was too thick, for my KA mixer, 5 qt, so I took it out and began to knead the dough. Let me tell you, that was a workout to get it past the window pane test! Anyway, lesson learned on that. My brioche was done in 20 minutes instead of the projected 30. Yes, I have a thermometer in my oven and it was the appropriate temp. No harm done. I took a piece to my neighbor to try, and oh, the look on her face of enjoyment, was priceless! You see, I have never had brioche before and she has. She said it was exactly like it is supposed to taste. The book did not say to remove these from the pan right away, but I did remove them and they look amazing. I enjoy cooking and baking and am very pleased with this book so far. This is opening a whole new world for me :)Someone said that the measurements weren't right in a review. I can only say that I used a digital scale, as that was the intent of the measurements, and I didn't intend to go by anything else. I would recommend this book to others!

This is a much better book than I had expected. I am an intermediate bread baker, have huge success, but have been making bread for just a year. I have made many recipes, and types of bread. This book touches into many type of baking with flour, but doesn't obsess over too many recipes of a kind. If you want to buy one good book, that you could start in the front and bake right through to the last recipe, this is your book. Huge selection of recipes, and you will have a vast education by the time you work through it. It is a pleasure to look through, and I feel each and recipe with be a go to for my kitchen. Was pleasantly surprised when I opened it. Great everyday book. Hats off to author. WONDERFUL for the beginning baker, but inclusive to more experienced bakers looking for a wide variety of recipes.

About the Hardcover version:I purchased the harcover version that was recently released February 2012 and is identified as a reprint. The hardcover version does not come with the DVD, although the picture Amazon has for this item states "Bonus DVD Video Inside." I contacted Amazon when the copy I received did not include the DVD as I thought there was an error. Amazon sent out a replacement and this copy did not include the DVD. When I spoke with a live person at Amazon unfortunately he did not seem to comprehend. I decided to just keep the hardcover as Hitz has numerous videos on YouTube.Now to the book's substance:The book is wonderful. it covers yeast and leavened sweet and savory breads and pastries. Hitz gives wonderful information about the ingredients. Such as the differences between Eurpoean and American butter. The discussion for laminated doughs is also well written and I found it helpful making the crossiants on page 140. I also had success with his pumpkin muffin recipe which I added chocolate chips and the ginger scones.The recipes are well laid out and the step by step photos are excellent. Hitz book is a wonderful addition to any cooking library.

This is an excellent book for the more advanced home baker. The collection of recipes provide a wide range of interesting and unique end products. The instructions are fairly easy to follow and, for the more difficult techniques, there is an accompanying DVD that shows how to perform the activity. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to increase their pastry skills. The savory scones made with bacon, caramelized onions and gruyere are amazing! However, beware! There are a lot of typos in ingredient amounts which I think were introduced by the editor. My recommendation is to use only the weight measurements, not the volume ones. Also, note that the temperatures given are for a convection oven. If, like me, you have a conventional oven, the author recommends increasing the temperature by 20 - 40 degrees.

This book has the best recipe for Gibassier....have tried three others and they didn't live up to Ciril Hitz recipe. Stumbled across this pastry at a local bakery and found it is the only bakery in the US that makes and sells these. Best darned pastry ever!

Excellent book!!! Printed in actual hard cover, no getting flour and yeast all over your cell phone. Pictures are both informative and colorfull as well as lots of them! Shows the meaning of Artistry in Artisan. You can almost smell the bread baking when you open the book.

I have to say I love making bread and collecting bread cookery books. This book is very well written and explains everything every step. The photography is great. I do not feel this is a book for a beginner, hence giving it 4 stars but it is a great book for my collection and I cannot wait to start making laminated dough which looks amazing and I would think tastes if done properly when cooked delicious.

We were fortunate enough to spend three days training at Chef Hitz's home bakery. He's the real thing and the book is excellent.

This series is simply delightful - from the scrumptious-sounding pastries to the wonderful animal familiars who accompany the witches in their various adventures. I love the constant presence of Mungo the dog, who is faithful, sweet and cheerful, except when the situation calls for his fierce inner wolf to emerge. I really found myself caring about Katie Lightfoot, and have enjoyed her evolution into fully embracing her witch-y heritage. Of course each book contains a murder mystery that Katie must solve, but it's never too gory and there are lots of other plot developments to engage us along the way. We also get a colorful tour of Savannah Georgia where all the stories take place. These books are a nice cozy escape, even with the murders! There is lots of positivity and goodwill to be found here, delicious-sounding food, engaging characters, and a fun imagining of a real-life witch.

When I first started reading the series, I thought the stories were entertaining, but none of them seemed like anything to really "write home about". But I kept reading the series because I liked the characters. These latest two books though have really been great and I've really enjoyed them.In this particular book, Katie and her friends are trying to solve the mystery of Orla, Aunt Lucy's friend's death. It seems like a tragic accident, but Katie knows that something just isn't right about it. But delving into this mystery almost makes Katie a victim!The plot was well-written and well thought out. I wasn't positive about the villain until it was revealed. I knew it was one of about 3-4 people but I just couldn't settle on a particular person before it was revealed. This book definitely kept me on my toes with guessing!The characters in this series are wonderful. They're well-rounded, complex, developed characters who have their own sense of weirdness and fun. I find it very entertaining to read about them! I recommend this series to any paranormal cozy mystery fan! Make sure you start at the beginning of the series with Brownies and Broomsticks in order to understand all the dynamics between the characters!

Having long had an academic interest in the history of magic and esotericism, and having lived in the American South for most of my six decades on this planet, I have enjoyed a few series incorporating magic and the region as subplots.The characters (both human and animal) peopling Bailey Cates’ Honeybee (Magical Bakery) series are well fleshed out and and consistently appealing. Without giving too much away, two if the regular characters embroiled in an antagonistic (but largely respectful) relationship in previous editions of the series finally come to an entirely satisfying reckoning of their relationship at the end of this book, and the revelation opens the door for still further plot development down the line.The characters are likable, the plots easy to follow, and the magical aspects incorporated are just enough to spice the storylines, much as the herbs employed in the fictional Savanah, Georgia, bakery (featured in its pages) make the baked goods on offer sound so very appealing. Speaking of the latter, Cates always includes detailed recipes of items in her stories as an addendum in the back of the book, too. How can you lose?If you’ve not read the previous Honeybee “Magical Bakery” novels, I recommend you do so, in order. I look forward to future installments in the series with genuine anticipation.

Oh my gosh. Where do I start? Who would have thought a magical baking mystery series who have cast the spell this one did on me? I love the characters. Whoever got hung up on one character (Steve) calling the heroine “Katie-Girl” lost out. There was a reason that Katie detached from Steve. She is much more than “Katie Girl”. She is a kind, powerful, smart woman who comes to see her “weirdness” as her gift. So bummed that at the moment this is the last novel in the series. Now I have to find another series to love for a while.

It took me a bit to adjust to this author’s style after finishing another author’s series. But once I did I settled right in for the whole series and loved them all. I miss all the characters!! I feel in love with Mungo and the other familiars and all the coven members. I wish there were more books so it didn’t have to end and I loved the reader as I listened to almost the whole series on audiobook! Thanks Bailey Cates for writing such a satisfying group of folks into being!

Bailey Cates did it again. She brought magic, romance and murder to life with this book. Witches and familiars abound as does trouble and danger. It's a wonderful book in a great series and I can't wait to read the next one.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this cozy mystery series. The blending of light witchcraft with the bakery forms a comfortable format. The transition from the first book to this one has been smooth and methodical. I look forward to reading more about Katie, Declan and the rest of the good witches of Savannah. Write on Ms. Cates!

I always enjoy these books. Katie stumbles across another mysterious death and begins to investigate. I hope there are more, because I want to know more about Katie's powers and how magic works.
