Review

“The Great Prostate Hoax boldly exposes the profit, politics and fraud behind PSA screening, and the serious harm done to countless men. This is a must-read for every man, and the women who care about them. ” ―Margaret I. Cuomo, M.D., author of A World Without Cancer“Dick Ablin, the discoverer of PSA, provides the inside story of how it became P$A, a veritable public health disaster, harming millions of men. The Hoax is a unique and provocative look into big medicine and why we desperately need a better way forward.” ―Eric J. Topol, MD, Director, Scripps Translational Science Institute, Chief Academic Officer, Scripps Health and Professor of Genomics, The Scripps Research Institute; Author, The Creative Destruction of Medicine“An intriguing story of how strong financial interests can trump weak data. And it goes well beyond the usual suspect – the manufacturer of the PSA test – to those who gain from more prostate cancer treatments and from cleaning up the resulting mess.” ―H. Gilbert Welch MD, MPH, author of Overdiagnosed: Making People Sick in the Pursuit of Health“The Great Prostate Hoax is the answer to my prayers, finally getting the message out to millions of men in jeopardy of undergoing unnecessary and debilitating treatments. Hoax sends a clear message that those who profit from PSA testing are doing so at the expense of countless men. A must read.” ―Alvin Cox, prostate cancer survivor who defied a nationally renowned urologist.

I had a PSA test a few years ago and when results showed a high PSA. I agree to a biopsy. It was very painful and I was peeing blood for a week and blood in my semen for 2 weeks. It showed no signs of cancer. A year later my doctor did another PSA test (I didn't know they do a PSA test every year when a man reaches a certain age) and wanted to perform another biopsy. I started researching PSA tests and immediately found Dr Ablin, the respected Pathologist who discovered the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). He explains that it only indicated that you have a prostate (hence the term Prostate specific not cancer specific. In the chapter "the color of money" he explains how they got FDA approval and how it Is a multi-billion dollar industry.

I highly recommend this book. We need to be proactive in taking care of our health. I purchased this book two weeks before I was due to under a biopsy on my pancreas. It all started after my doctor informed that my PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) was very elevated and that I needed to make an appointment with a Urologist. Following the doctor's orders, I did just that. The Urologist agreed with what the doctor had found, a highly elevated PSA. As a result he recommend that a biopsy be performed, to determine if I have cancer. I said, "Okay." Two weeks before the scheduled procedure, I contacted the Urologist's office to find out what all I needed to do, and what could I expect at the procedure. Needless to say, after being given instructions, and what to expect afterwards, especially the part of the multiple incisions, and the duration (possibly months) of bleeding, I decided to (Thank God!) search out more information. That's when I purchased and downloaded this book. After I started reading it, I knew that there was no way that I was going to under a biopsy on my pancreas. Absolutely Not! All I can say is, WHEW! CLOSE CALL! Sorry for those who've never got to read this book or any such book like it, before they took the plunge. Do yourself a favor...get the book. And women, if your husband or boyfriend won't, then do it for them. Enlighten yourself, that you can enlighten them. It is said that, "What you don't know can't hurt you." Well, I certainly beg to differ, because it truly can. After reading this book, I am certain that you will agree with me. And the man who benefits will be so ever grateful.

After reading this excellent book, I now wonder three years after completing prostate cancer treatment and being cancer free with minimal side effects, if I really needed treatment. When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer my background as a psychologist with an interest in research led me to reviewing the literature on prostate cancer. I became aware of the risks of severe side effects inherent in most prostate cancer treatments and the dangers of the profit driven prostate cancer industry. I then selected the treatment I believe has the least risk of side effects, proton therapy. I discovered that most of the men going through this treatment with me also invested a great deal of time and effort reviewing this same literature. Unfortunately, most men don't seek such knowledge and instead make the understandable mistake of trusting the physician, almost always a urologist, who diagnosed their prostate cancer and then recommends treatment. A very real danger exists when the livelihood of this physician is based on patients agreeing to the treatment he or she is recommending and then providing. Dr. Richard Ablin has clearly achieved his stated goal for writing this book of “...exposing the abuse of power and profit over patient ethos” as the prostate cancer industry incorrectly uses the PSA to scare men into treatment. Men should not automatically agree to the use of the PSA to aid in diagnosing prostate cancer. They should instead get a second opinion from their internist or medical oncologist. Men diagnosed with prostate cancer should consider watchful waiting and also do their research on the side effects of different treatments. I strongly encourage men and their loved ones to read this important book.Harold Dawley, Ph.D., author – Proton Warriors – Surviving Prostate Cancer AND The Prostate Cancer Industry.

It is very sad how the medical-pharmaceutical conglomerate has absconded with the health of our society. Free will can only be exercised when the patient has "Informed Consent". This cannot be accomplished when your physician has massively inadequate knowledge in numerous areas in which they feel competent (but are not). This book, written by the scientist who discovered the PSA (prostate specific antigen molecule) exposes all that he has now learned regarding the misuse by doctors and surgeons of his discovery. Read it and learn. David Getoff, CCN, FAAIM

I've been an eager reader of Derrida since encountering Plato's Pharmacy in grad school. This second edition of Donner la Mort includes the essay Literature in Secret. Derrida is a notoriously difficult read, but rewarding; it may help to realize that he does not lay out a theory of philosophy, but rather performs philosophy. I found his exploration of the Abraham and Isaac story especially notable. In reading him, I always think of the carpenter's maxim: "measure twice, cut once."

Derrida's analysis of 'secret' is excellent, and a wonderful set up for his premise about the significance of death.Others have mentioned that a foundation of Heidegger would be helpful when reading this book, and I would agree. In this sense, I feel like Derrida here clarifies Heidegger's position about how Being Towards Death produces authenticity, but this could be because I read both for fun and didn't have any courses to guide me through.I really liked his analysis on the nature of subjectivity at the end. I'm not one to try to summarize an author's arguments in a review - I think the person can read the book him/herself and discover what is said, but I'm a fan of Derrida, and I believe this is his best work. I read Grammatology (yes, the whole thing, not the excerpts from Between the Blinds and in college courses), and really enjoyed it, and this may have influenced how well I enjoyed this work.

DON'T MISS THE HERMENEUTICAL GUIDE-STATEMENT ON PAGE "9". Derrida is best known as the "father of deconstructionism" for post-modern thought. But approaching this book from that narrow perspective would rob the reader of a great deal of significance in this work. This book truly is about "THE GIFT"; and that point should be honored. But the best key for understanding this manuscript is given to us by Derrida himself on page "9": "Even if that is not the case, nothing prevents us from putting a psychoanalytic reading of these words (Patocka's) to the test, at least on an experimental basis. This is Derrida's "philosophy of psychology", through the interpretive lens of Patocka. He willingly takes up this approach as an experiment because post-modern thinking has almost exclusively taken the subjective/psychological framework as their best model for articulation; usually consisting of an extreme leftist Hegelian framework. Derrida is a difficult thinker to absorb; but not impossible. He just has a style of compressing a great deal of significance in just a few pages. In this instance, I would suggest slowing-down your normal reading pace for scholarly work, in order to stay tuned to the author's evolving thought. This is "post-grad" material so don't expect less. This is one of the most strongly-balanced presentations I've seen in post-modern work; and from a date of 1995, which is a little ahead of the curve when its popularity began to rise. Derrida approaches from the depths of the "dark", the unconscious. Better wear your miner's hat with spotlight. The conversion experience takes place in the unconscious, not consciousness. This is a Christian presentation; but of the post-modern type. In fact the view actually proposes a reciprocal model consisting of: 1. orgiastic-aesthetics; 2. Platonic-rationalism; and 3. Christian-reversal. All three remain present to each other thoughout the workings of the hermeneutical circle, where the stage of "myth-morphic incorporation" continues to re-constitute the pre-linguistic self-consciousness. This myth-morphic stage is where the unconscious takes the "mystery" of conversion experiences and converts them into "secret", one that is internally posted as an objective representation (just not linguistic yet). Articulation of our responsible intentions of differentiation for the "GOOD" take place in consciousness. And ths is an articulation "before": 1. The "other"; 2. The "law"; and 3. The "self". Most of the specificity is before the "law" and consists of our deconstructions of the inauthenticity of technological society; and reconstruction using the three reciprocal "secrets" and their alliance with "responsibility". This great internal work by the self; who speaks from an internal dialogue between the unconsciousness and consciousness, posits the intention as "gift". This means a self-sacrifice that actually goes to the extreme of relinquishing all "possession" of the intention so that it can truly be self-actualized as an "incarnation" in the world. Take your time with this book and the reward will be overwhelming. I'm extremely impressed with Derrida n 1995. Easily a very appreciative "5" stars for boldly presenting such profound content.

You can give someone life--or you can put someone to death. But you cannot "give" someone their own death. Death is a "gift" because it insures our irreplaceableness in God's eyes; it is ours and ours alone. No one can die in my place no more than I can die in theirs. Our willingness to acknowledge this relationship with our own deaths (which above all requires "responsibility," a term Derrida seems to prefer to "faith") in turn unites us with God and the self, with the giver and the receiver.I'll admit I hadn't expected a deconstructionist to use terms like "absolute," "transcendant," "God," "self"--in profusion and in earnest. But perhaps Derrida has sufficiently exposed the instability, metaphoric basis and deceptive play of language to be able to employ it without qualifiers, disclaimers, and tedious textual self-referentiality. As is his custom, he represents his own work as a critique of others' works--Plato's "Phaedo," Nietzsche's "Genealogy of Morals," Kierkegaard's "Fear and Trembling," and the contemporary, politically executed Polish philosopher Jan Potocka. While he establishes his distance from Plato and Nietzsche, his re-visioning of Kierkegaard offers new angles without questioning or challenging the great Dane's existential reading of the Abraham-Isaac story. And his alignment with Potocka is so complete as to suggest more an apologia than a critique of the latter's work. Add to these texts numerous references to Heidegger and to both the Old and New Testaments as well as to stories by Poe and Hawthorne, and you'll have some idea of how richly allusive, not to mention dense, Derrida's discourse can be, even in a brief work such as this. The primary requisite for reading "The Gift of Death" is some knowledge of its precursor, "Fear and Trembling." Like Kierkegaard, Derrida defines religion as access to the responsibility of a free self, which in turn is defined as a relationship consciously and secretly experienced by the individual subject who sees him or herself in the gaze of God. Truth is separated from Socrates' truth by its interiority, by its replacement of reason, ethics, and aesthetics with the sheer horror of the abyss. Compared to Kierkegaard, however, Derrida's account is less romantic, less inspiring, more disturbing. The leap of faith involves not a sacrifice of Isaac but of oneself, a secret and senseless meeting with one's own death. Derrida interprets the absence of woman in the Abraham and Bartleby stories as proof that the "knight of faith's" quest is not the "tragic hero's". Instead, it is beyond all knowledge, a confrontation with the abyss that marks the Absolute singularity of the self. (This latter observation is reminiscent of Marlowe's inability, or unwillingness, in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," to share the "truth" of Kurtz' final words, "The horror, the horror," with Kurtz' fiance.)In the latter part of his critique, Derrida offers a paradoxical criticism of the technological, modern age. Far from becoming quantified or de-naturalized, we have returned to the demonic and orgiastic from which religion arose. Modern man has fallen into inauthenticity, becoming not a self or person but assuming the mask of a "role." Present-day democracy, in turn, is not about the equality of individuals but of roles. Hence the importance of discovering and accepting the gift of death that determines human uniqueness. Responsibility is the criterion; freedom is the result. This is a work not to be read quickly or only once. Derrida moves slowly, taking two steps backward before moving one step forward, but his method insures the communication of his meanings. If it's any inducement to the reader, I would suggest that the fourth and final chapter, "Tout autre est tout autre," is anticlimactic and unhelpful. By then the attentive reader will already have located the gift.

Derrida impresses again with a magnificent display of his analysis on language, the concept of writing, and the deconstruction in the field of phenomenology.

Love this! I've been wanting a kid friendly way to incorporate daily Bible reading (let's face it, the Bible is full of things I'd rather not explain to my 5 & 7 yr olds right now). This is something we can do as a family or that my oldest strong reader can do independently. I like that it's versatile enough for any Christian, leaving specific doctrinal beliefs for parents to interject.

Our Daily Bread for Kids was a New Years Gift for my 7 year old son. This is a daily devotional, with the month and day noted for each day. Each day has a Bible verse pertaining to the subject. The subject may be a specific Bible story, such as Ruth, or a life lesson, such as being a good friend or learning to trust in Jesus. There is also a catch phrase that sums up the message, (God is with me-so I will not be afraid) and a fun fact (The Jordan River is about 156 miles long). At the end of each reading is a Read More suggestion with another scripture passage and a question pertaining to the devotion. I like this, as it allows to go a little deeper. The illustrations are bright and engaging and include a diverse group of characters (which is important to our mixed race family). The message is solid and Biblical and not watered down. My son loves it.

These are very well-written, kid friendly devotions. They take only a few minutes to read, but they are packed with great truths that the kids can understand. I read them to the kids while they eat breakfast in the morning. We all enjoy this book. I love how it places a lot of emphasis on kids and their relationship with God. This is better than any other devotional I have ever gotten for my kids. It is written in a fun way with vocabulary that kids can comprehend. Each day has a "fun fact" that the kids look forward to also. Very well worth the money.

I had a 30 day sample of this and really enjoyed using it for devotions with my children but this book doesn't have any scripture passage to read. Thd "read more" section isnt there at all. I dont just want to read about the bible, I want to read the Bible too. Very dissapointed the scripture passage was left out.

The title includes 365 meaningful moments with God which is perfectly executed in this little book. I bought this book as an addition to our bedtime routine. We say prayers nightly and I was looking to go a little deeper with our 8 yr old child than prayers that although are important tend to sound similar over time. This book adds to the quality of our time with God before bedtime. We can also use the devotional to help our child get creative with his prayers. Highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a simple way to add biblical time with their kids.

I absolutely love this book. It is a wonderful way to discuss God with children. It emphasizes a personal relationship with God rather than just scripture memorization. Don't forget the accompanying coloring book. I cannot emphasize enough how wonderful the writing is in this book. Its written perfectly for little ones to understand and to grasp their attention. Each "lesson" is just a few minutes, but can spring to life further activities to bring home the lesson.

I've skimmed through this already and I absolutely love it I cannot wait to give this to my son.

We try to get a new devotional book for my kids each year. They have thoroughly enjoyed this one so far. The stories are short and simple enough that my 8 year old frequently reads it for all the kids. They enjoy the pictures as well. I would highly recommend this book.

From the moment I opened the book I found this book hard to use. The organization is less than adequate and it is down right hard to find anything in it let alone be able to get relevant information out of it to make a care plan!If you plan on using this book make sure you have plenty of other books to get your interventions from and your rationals for your care plans as this book has neither of these in them! A friend had suggested to be Betty J Ackley book and I took their advice and I am so happy. Making a care plan with Ackley's book is a dream NANDA, INterventions and rationals all in one book and all for less than 12 bucks for an older edition or 40 or so for the newer one!I am still upset that carpinito book is required by my school since it is worthless and will just be a doorstop or something to put my beer on!If you don't take my word for it ask a nursing student at your school and find out for your self how worthless they think this book is!Keep your money because you will need it to buy other books that are useful.

This book is a front to back reader. Carpenito does an excellent job with the correct verbage for Nursing Diagnosis. She is the best front end writter for an explanation of what the process is. She is obviously analytical. When it comes to procedures, she writes them out... She gives author notes that thourougly explains pitfal's. I find the book lacking on goal statements, and I wish the procedures were organized by Assessment, Therapeutic Interventions, Informing, continued attending and management. I really get tired of reading through vebage when i am looking for a specific thing like the therapeutic intervention. If I was looking for the perfect book. I would use this one with Spark's and Tayors Nursing Diagnosis. Spark's and Taylors is organized to a microdot level. They give you the goals written (important) and organize the nursing interventions.I really recommend reading this book from front to back to any nursing student. All the NCLEX questions come from these books, If I had nursing school to do all over again, I would read this book first, I think it would have taken me to an A level on nursing questions. It is hard reading because it is not entertaining, but if you consider all of the stress you will go through answering the NCLEX questions, you will want to find the author and just hug her. I can not believe that there is not a course that just teaches nursing diagnosis. If i ran a school there would be, when I consider the splash effect they aim for this would have been a great key.

I have a love hate relationship with this book, although it is essential for the nursing diagnosis process. The pocket size of this book is great! Filled with everything you need to know, it's kind of complicated but if you take the time to read the beginning it makes more sense. If your instructor/RN manager suggests you get a nursing diagnosis book this is definitely the one you want! Super convenient!

Got this for my niece in Australia to study for her professional nursing test. It helped her, she passed tests.

This is a strange little book. There isn't any particular sense to the way it is set out, it's filled with little symbols that don't have any explanation, and some common disorders are not even mentioned. I'm not familiar with alternative nursing diagnosis books, but I'd recommend for nursing students to look around for an alternative.

Great for my nursing class

The book does what is it supposed to as it has useful information; however, I was a little embarrassed when the first time I used it I realized the author had mispelled Nursing on the side binding. There is no way to contact the author of the book. All in all, the book serves its purpose but again it's embarrassing to go to class and have a book that cannot spell the name of the program you are attending. Order did arrive on time.

Received book very quickly. It is what I wanted as it has the NANDA, NIC, NOC references that I needed.
